I was wondering do you have to re-apply all the textures in DS when you do this? I exported a max file as an obj file but the material file was empty.

D|S can only fetch material colors from the MTL file.  Unfortunately, textures are not yet covered.

(that is unless they have suddenly updated it and I missed out!)

Textures should be read from the MTL file, if it was saved and if you select it in the import options

"Should be read" is the operative word here.  I have version 1.3.0.1 and it still doesn't read textures even from MTL's it writes itself, much less from outside sources.

Have you reported that to the bug database?

Medzinatar posted Sat, 03 June 2006 at 3:14 PM

Yes, starting with version 1.0

I take it that you have never actually tried to import a textured object.

Yes, with variable success. I haven't tried exporting and reimporting, though.

By variable success, do you mean that a mapped texture has come in at least one time? or variable in that you only get material colors (diffuse, specular, whatever)?

I'm pretty sure I've had textures load on at least some occasions - unfortunately I tend not to keep the OBJ around so I can't check.

Medzinatar posted Sun, 04 June 2006 at 2:26 PM

That's nice.  So then you told the original questioner that textures load when you don't even know if they do or not.

RHaseltine posted Mon, 05 June 2006 at 9:58 AM

No, I said they should load - it was my recollection that they do, in some cases (and until you started sowing the seeds of doubt I'd have hedged less). I also read your fist reply as saying it was not a feature that was there (in the sense of being unimplemented) rather than what you intended, that it doesn't (in your experience) work as claimed - if i had appreciated that I'd have asked for further and better particulars, and about the bug database. Unfortunately my modelling tool won't even write OBJ files, which limits my ability to test - I did just try exporting a textured primitive and found that it worked (that is, loaded textured) if I turned off the Collect textures option.
