I've been using Vue Esprit since 4, and I am finally getting to the point where I can really find tha balance between image quality and render time. However, one of my scenes that I did recently took outrageously long to render for no reason that I can think of aside from boolean objects.
Sine Vue 4 didn't have boolean functions, in the past I have done all my modelling in Blender or another modeling program or I have found pre-made objects for another source. Now that I have 5, I figured I'd try out the functions, for a simple thing like a table, chairs and a doorway. So I set up a scene with one partial poser figure and some stuff I made in Vue. It takes ages to render even on Superior (I usually render on Ultra if I can). I have checked all the usual suspects, radiosity, volumetric atmosphere and other effects and none are on. All I can figure is that Vue takes ages to render things that are boolean. Has anyone else had this problem? Should I just go back to Blender (or my newly purchased Hexagon). Or should I export the items as OBJ files then reimport them?
I've made scenes that are far more complicated with tons of poser figures and volumetric lighting and they render faster than this scene.

Have you convertred them to mesh yet or are you still rendering the actual boolean construction?

Selected quotes from V5I manual (p135):
Broadcast: this render setting was introduced for animation purposes. (This section goes on to explain about improved AA for rendering motion blur in animations...)
Superior:this render setting is similar to Broadcast, with adjustments made to improve quality .... and is significantly slower than in Broadcast...
Ultra: this is the best render quality available. It is also not very useful, since it takes several times longer to render than other setting, while not necessarily producing outstandingly better results. Use it only when you want to render very high quality pictures, for publishing.
Since I don't publish and don't do animations, I never use anything above Final:-))
Also, I don't bother with Vue's booleans. I find it quicker and easier to use a 3D modeller to create stuff (and it usually results in a lot cleaner mesh)...
Cheers,
Diolma

I didn't know there was a way to do that. That would explain the render times. How do you convert them to mesh?

I like the smoothness and fine detail that ultra gives. It probably has to do with the loads of antialiasing passes. As much as the manual says there is little difference, it is there. Since I'm only rendering at 800x450, this usually is not more than a few hour process. I have found myself using the new Superior setting in 5 more though, because it renders a lot faster but still has high-quality and is a good compromise for those really complicated renders.

My demo ver ran out but from what i can remember,R Click the parent of the boolean construction you wish to convert, and a fly out menu pops up with a long list of options,...i think it's on that list...sorry i couldn't be more helpful...

I have V5I (full version - I bought it). If I remember, tomorrow I'll check it out. Too late tonight - bed beckons. Actually no, it doesn't beckon, it demands..
All I need to do is remember (Diolma ties knot in throat 'cos paper hankies don't knot that well...)

I've looked through the manual and all the options I can find in Vue Esprit and I can't find anywhere to convert the boolean items to mesh. It's not under the right click either as far as I can see. If anyone can help with this it would be great. I'd really like to be able to use boolean operations in Vue, but not if the render times are going to double or triple.

You can't do it in Esprit. I've got both Esprit and Infinite, and it's available in Infinite but not Esprit.
Sorry.

Thanks anyway, that's good to know. I guess it's Blender or Hexagon for me for modeling.

Ther is a render bug in boolean operations.
