Forgive this if it's not too good an idea but here goes.  I never got a response fm AS if this is a good idea.  In all fairness, I know he is a busy guy and gallery changes probably occupying a lot of his time.  Here goes anyway...

Theme to be "Awesome Skys"

Bryce rendered sky to a major if not the major vocal point of the scene.

 1) No photo backdrop skys allowed although photo based mats are okay

  1. Any POV

  2. any genre scene

  3. Sky's and clouds can be fm presets, custom designed, or commercial or freebie available sky sets as long as the author of sky lab custom sky is credited.

  4. imports allowed keeping in mind the sky's importance in the scene is to be the deciding factor.

 6) minimal post work. Clouds added in via post work is discouraged after all this is a Bryce challenge

Surreal, landscape, alien, sci-fi... no matter.

My desire is to see what kind of creative juices will flow and what will come out of sky lab, volumetrics, and atmospherics.

What do you think?  Any takers?  Or should we just hand first place over to Orbital?  I smell long render times so start now.

Nope, I like the Idea of the "Sky" Challenge.                                                                                                To often the sky is a neglected piece of the overall piece.

sounds good to me, especially as the focus should be on a Bryce creation, after all this is the 'Bryce' forumn, i like it, and will try to enter this time.

Experience is no substitute for blind faith.

Like the idea. Once the Formula One British Grand is over Then my attention will be all bryces providing no more technical problems

Sounds great.

Yes, this is a GREAT idea!

skiwillgee;
Check out the upload area, see if it falls in line with what you were thinking, I tweaked the wording to hopefully get the point through that the cloud/sky creation should be pure Bryce.

Yes/no/maybe?

@ AS    Upload wording looks fine to me.  The "rule" area are highlighted wierd on my screen though (IE browser)  they are black font against almost black highlight.

AgentSmith posted Fri, 09 June 2006 at 9:09 PM

Should be white font, but that's the default Renderosity, it will look different if a members' color options have been changed.

I'll take the highlight off, I had put it on to try and make sure people read it, lol.

One sec...

Fixed. :o)

I'll be sure to put up a selection of my clouds mat presets for download for use in the Challenge. (by tomorrow)

Again, great idea!

Who's "Orbital"?

I like this challenge aready.

Often i have people "mistake" my spacescapes for bryce "skies".

Their just planes with  an image applied to a radial light.

Does this links pic provided qualify for the challenge parameters?

skiwillgee posted Sat, 10 June 2006 at 11:03 PM

Good question.  I'm not sure of the process you are describing but if it is just a method of projecting a photo onto a plane instead of view the photo itself, I'd say it is not allowable.  But, if you are projecting a Bryce created gel or whatever I'd say ok.  The criteria is, "is  the sky (or fake sky in this case) a 3d creation and not a photo of what nature has already done."   Did that help?

If you have a process that you think should be legal, then submit it with an explanation as WIP here and let the forum pass judgement before you upload to challenge.  I think that would be fair.  You may be pushing the envelop of creativity that needs to be shared.  Good luck.  I'm anxious to see what you have to offer.

I just noticed your link.  Definitely not a photo, but looks more spacey than atmosphere as it stands in your image.  If you can incorporate it into a scene to convince the voters it is a sky and not a nebula, go for it.  It is their vote that counts.

Attached Link: Bryce4 Scene

As far as applying cloud mats to planes or meshes i'm familiar with that method and find it rather a boring result by itself.

If the intent of this challenge is to get a photo-realistic sky/clouds effect i'm definitely out of this one.

Those are the everyday kind of effects i stay away from because their just boring to me.

Though this challenge seems "theme specific" as I requested in the previous challenge,

the criteria in the above mentioned parameters doesn't seem to suggest that it need be a "Terran daytime natural sky scene".

As far as my  method I'll post a link  of a bryce4 file that anyone interested in can dissect for themselves.

Thats how I took it Mr. Smith.

I'm in for sure ;D !

Agreed!

AgentSmith posted Sun, 11 June 2006 at 5:37 PM

In the download I'll be putting up, I'll be sure to throw in some of the really weird cloud mat presets I had made up.

They couldn't be anything but alien or surreal.

Attached Link: scene not mat

You know the one thing i'd like to be able to do is save my "skies" as sky mats...only 1 prob: they're scenes not mat.s!

To illustrate here is a bryce5 "scene" not " sky mat" if anyone knows how to turn a scene into a sky material let me know.

http://www.a3dlover.com/models/test_1.zip

This zip will not be part of my challenge efforts, is free to all.

In the image posted is 1 plane and a radial lite with a cloud mat. on both, another radial lite with an apophysis2 fractal image on it- starfield enabled in sky lab.

So this method as a "base" wouldn't be borderline in the challenge criteria, correct?

skiwillgee posted Sun, 11 June 2006 at 7:53 PM

Your method is fine.  GO FOR IT!  I had suggested no photo sky's because that is a method available in bryce but I was going for artist creation.  You have certainly created something great!
