Last sunday i've shot pictures during a club party in amsterdam. I was satisfied with most of the shots. But i also encountered some problems. There was a stage were dancers were performing and wanted to make some action shots from them. This was my strategy: Setting my aperture at f 2.8 my shutterspeed between 1.3" - till 1.6" seconds using my flash. The thought behind this was to use the flash to freeze my subject while using the longer shutterspeed to let the light produced by the disco lamps flow into the picture. This strategy always works for me when taking pictures in clubs when people are standing still in front of me. See the samples i have provided. But when shooting the dancers this didn't work. In the sample if you look at the second row of pictures from above you see a shot i made that evening which came close to what i want. So after the long introduction my question: How can i photograph a moving dancer in a nightclub? I want the dancer who moves perfectly frozen but also want to capture the disco lights. I managed to do it once that evening. Tips are greatly welcome! I use a nikon d200 with a sigma 17-35mm lens. Hope somebody can help me cause my next shoot is coming up!!
