What's a good method for rendering a cartoony look in P6?
I've never quite gotten Sketch to work, and the toon rendering is usually terrible.

That's a great start, I've read through it before, but it's not quite the effect I was looking for.

esther, is there a way to fix the street texture in toonpro? it looks extremely pixellated. maybe that's how it handles gradients.
estherau posted Sun, 16 July 2006 at 9:28 PM
Hi, I think I would have to put in a plane and texture it as road in carrara to fix that street. Love esther

The best way that I've found is to use is the "Cartoon Shaders" material pack from RDNA. It is well set up to allow for rendering in a number of cartoon styles (anime, 4-color comics, more modern comic style), and can incorporate existing textures with cartoon style shading. It has a pretty good tutorial as well. It essentially bypasses the Poser Cartoon rendering entirely.
I also use ShaderSpider, available form DAZ, to help apply the textures to just those groups I want. (On the Millenium figures, it knows what material zones are skin and what aren't.)

WOW... cartoon shaders is amazing.
I may have to dish out the few bucks to get it.
Thanks, aardvark!

You might try 2 of the free Photoshop-compatible plugins from this site. Namely, "Ilustrator" and "Line Art." Perhaps not quite what you're looking for, but the price is right, they are easy to use, and playing with the sliders can give a variety of different looks.

Here's an image I made with by playing with the Illustrator plug-in for about 2 minutes. Again, probably not what you're looking for, but it may give you an idea of what's possible:

if anybody posts a render with olivier's toonshaders (rdna), don't forget to credit olivier. I have checked back thru various cartoon categories here, but wasn't able to find any instances where the poster said he/she used those toonshaders.

Thanks, linkdink.
I found something like that already preinstalled with GIMP, the free program that's similar to photoshop - I'd highly recommend checking out GIMP.
ToonShader still looks amazing - I'm a poor college kid but I think I will shell out a couple of bucks for it.
Thanks everyone for the feedback!

Gosh if I'd discovered poser in college I never would have got through. Do you really have time to play when you're studying??? I know you can't study all the time, but in between studying you probably should be exercising to improve your brain bloodflow. Oh and having a social life (dating V3 doesn't count) YOu need to finish studying so you can get a job and then afford to buy more poser things hehe. Love esther

Lol no, I really don't have time for it, but I try to make up for it during breaks and summer. I figured I'll have more time in college than when I am on the work force.
My obsession started when I was about 13 and my brother bought Poser 3. I got Poser 6 last year and was amazed at the improvement and haven't been able to get enough of it since.

I did another search of only the poser gallery here, using only the keyword "olivier". I got these results (none earlier than 45 days ago), all of which credited Toon-Shaders by Olivier (sorted by the serach engine's relevance score): http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1158183 http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1155420 http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1138036 http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1155874 http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1186125 http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1150071 http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1157550 http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1139014 http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1136810 none of these renders is commercially acceptable IMVHO, but it's irrelevant whether they are, as this is not a pay-per-view gallery. however, I am certain that the right person, with the right settings and the right postwork, can use olivier's shaders to produce a commercially acceptable result. the same goes for any of the other shaders (stewer, compiler, trekkie, crescent et al.), which can produce similar results with a bit of tweaking.

Excellent sketch look - cartoon and line filters? I have gimp so I'm not sure of the photoshop equivalent.
Still, I'm trying to look for a cartoony look, with simplistic colors / shades.

Miss Nancy posted Wed, 02 August 2006 at 1:45 PM
yes, I saw your work, adam - commendable. I had one question - in a recent image you said there was no postwork, but by definition, photoshop actions constitute post-render alterations (postwork). was the one that said "no postwork" done entirely without photoshop? either way, I think there is a great deal of interest in your technique.
AdamWright posted Wed, 02 August 2006 at 3:38 PM
Hey, Miss Nancy
I see what you mean! What I meant by "no postwork" is that I usually postwork my images by painting hair, etc. In that image, all I did was click the Action, and I used a hair prop in Poser instead of painting the hair in Photoshop afterwards.
Technically, of course, you are correct...the Action IS postwork.
