Hi all can any one give me some information on Poseray I have heard a lot of people mention it but never used it.
Is it any good? Can it be used like Daz3d to do renders or is it just a file converter?
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am new to this but keen to learn

I have used Pose-Ray.
Not bad, but then, I am only a hobbyist render person, not professional.
You need POV-ray to run as the engine, I believe.

mmmmmmmm that sounds Interesting So am I correct in saying you download the file it coverts it to wavefront and that can then be used in Daz3d i.e clothes and other stuff?

Oh, the poseray and povray thingies are for rendering the picture, not for mesh manipulation or conversion. You need a modelling software to do mesh (3D object) conversions.

Yes, POSE-ray essentially converts quite a few formats into POVray format for rendering, and it can save them as povray, moray or OBJ.
So you can use it just as a file convertor. (without even installing the actual renderer, POVray)
Also very useful are the ability to collect all textures in a single directory, resize textures, exclude unwanted objects, split vertices, mesh smoothing.
This is before you get to the excellent renderer, with GI and simulated HDRI.

As long as if I can download 3DS clothing and use it in daz3d that will be cool
But if it can do renders as well (bonus)

I'm not sure how useful its going to be on clothing.
Clothes that don't move are a bit difficult to put on :laugh:

oh yes, robin123, check out Wings3D anyway. I think it will do both 3DS and OBJ files, so you may get some milieage in conversion. MetasequoiaLE does 3DS, but somehow, it deesn't export a useable version. Anyway, all the best with using Pose-Ray.

Hi All
Had a go with poseray last night managed to covert darth vader but can’t get it in to daz as a usable item! How do you do that?. The file seems to be ok but it don’t work the same way as daz. Is this just for renders? Or once you convert the file it can be used like the props and clothing in daz?

Depending on the files you started with you should be able to get an importable item. However, trying to do a whole costume in one step is not going to work. To get it 'poserised' you probably want seperate boots, gloves, cape and helmet. Each will need textures, bumpmaps, transmap etc. You'll certainly want some morphs for posing and adjustments. Fortunately some very nice people have done all this already. Try the starwars freestuff at JHoaglands site: www.vanishingpoint.biz

If you have tryed to convert a conforming cloth, chances are you have lost the cloth's bone structure in the process (if it had one). Although Poseray do figure conversion, it's main utility is simply to render DAZ Studio and Poser scenes (exported in Wavefront format) in POV-Ray. It works well with the previous version of Studio, that did not have raytraced shadows.

Hi robin123, I've just started using PoseRay for 3ds to obj conversion so I can use my vast collection of props in DAZ/Studio. One thing I have noticed, when you import the converted file it mat be invisable even though it appears in the DAZ scene tab. if you go to surfaces and change the Ambiant from white to black your object should appear. When it does you may need to re-scale it. My objects allways seem to be very small!!
