At the top of your Layers palette you will see a little box with the word "Default" in it. Click the arrow and a drop down menu will appear with a list of different compositing effects. Test each one out on an image and you will see what changes occur. You can apply any of them to each layer you add to your image.
I also use Painter, so most of my books are on that program with one being a combo on Painter and Photoshop, so I can't help on that. You might check Amazon.com for Photoshop books, I know they have them.
There are loads of web resources. One that I like are the Wacom.com tutorials. Adobe has them, and so many others. Do a Google search. Plus, I know others will give you some resources to check out.

Compositing involves making two or more images look like one image -- for example combining a background photo with a Poser render, so that the rendered Poser figure looks like it's part of the photo. There is no one set of good tutorials on this -- just read far and wide, or experiment with Photoshop as much as you can. I do a lot of compositing in my cover work, and 99% of my techniques are self-taught ... just stuff I discovered on my own while playing in Photoshop. We can all help you discover your own techniques, but it'll be much easier to do if you have more specific questions, since compositing can be done in so many different ways and for so many different reasons.
I'm including a link to one of my photo compositing examples so that you can see what can be done in combining several photos to make one.

Thanks aprilgem for not pointing out what a dunce I was to not make it clear at least 2 images were needed for compositing. Duh! I think I need sleep!

No problem. Longsword's question is really much too general, and I think you were addressing a much more specific issue of layers, which of course is VERY important in compositing. I use the Layer Blending Options all the time in my composite work. :)

Both of you thanks, I understand what you say APRILGEM about my question. I am in the process of learning poser 6 and would much like to blend in background pictures with characters created in poser 6, as I would like to make them into a comic for my own enjoyment and my kids, hopefully using comicbook creator that is my goal anyway, so any guideance at all would be appreciated and I thank ARTWITHIN for that small tip, that was a god-send.

Ahh, well now that I know what it is you really want to do -- that is, composite a Poser render with a background photo -- then, yes, I can help you better now. I actually have a link that helps you with that specific task. :)
