Hi All,
A simple question, how do you switch between cameras?
When I render via F12, I always get the first/default camera in the scene.
I have tried the align view to new camera, but that does not seem to affect the camera that is doing the render.

Select that new camera and press CTRL+0.
But if I may notice, you have a lot of questions so I suggest that you get Blender's manual available here http://www.blender3d.org/cms/Documentation.628.0.html
It's a bit outdated but very helpful and there you'll find a lot of stuff that you are asking here, and a lot more. You can also look at Blender wiki http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Main_Page where you can find a lot of tutorials and similar stuff.

Have you actually tried the CTRL-0?
I did that, but it did not seems to work. I still got my original camera when rendering. You can also access that via the Space Bar menu. I thought it strange...
I have been reading the docs quite a bit. I downloaded the HTMLs over the weekend.

Yes, I have tried CTRL+0.
But, have you actually added a new camera to your scene?
Got to Add menu and select Camera. New camera will be crated at position of 3D coursor. Then press CTRL+0 to set active camera to that new camera. Now press NUM7 and then pres CTRL+ALT+0. Your new camera will be aligned to top view.
And for fun, you can press ALT+0 and you'll switch default camera back to first camera.

And first of all, hit Ctrl 0 when the mouse cursor is in the 3D window:) If you see the view has changed with Ctrl 0, it should also change the render camera.

Ah, yes, I always forgot to mention that Blender is sensitive to cursor position... :o)
