I heard back from Piet, and am looking forward to the photos.
It is said you  all had a bit of trouble keeping up with him on the mountans.

So, Vera started the thread.  Ta Sugar!

First, before I say anything else - everything that Oom Piet has to say guys - IT'S NOT TRUE!!!  giggle  No honestly, we had a really lovely weekend and before I say anything else, I just need to do this...

THANX GUYS!!!  You were a great group!!  Oom Piet, please tell Tannie Petro she's absolutely lovely!!!  We had a great time with you two!!  Herman (aka Harry, aka Harry Potter), you're the best man!!  Oh oh!  Remind me to show RR how you make use of a tripod!!  Sheesh!!  Shame, I had to help the guy out but this story is for a later stage in the thread.

Vera, you and Shaz were great!  Though I have to say guys - Vera is a REAL blabbermouth!  Even Andreas can come take lessons from her!!  Andrew, herself and Shaz were sitting in the lounge on Friday afternoon chatting and I was going outside, looking for my kid and when I came back, a long while after that, she was still blabbering.  Sheesh!  Real blabbermouth that one!

As for Andrew (aka Andries), thanx for flying down all the way from Cape Town Andrew!  You contributed to a stunning weekend!  Needless to say, he was the iron man for the weekend!  He's not scared of a bit of mampoer I have to say (and yeah, here comes the story of the mampoer again) giggle  But wait, let's give the rest of the group something to say as well cause I'm starting to sound like PeeWee (aka PW) :tongue1:

Oh, and here's where we stayed

You guys were so lucky where you stayed! I was a freeking self catering hotel!!! Really awesome - althou I'm not gonna complain about our digs.

I think on Friday night thou you were the blabbermouth! And Saturday was Andrew's turn.

I must give big props to Andy for being the one to travel the fatherest and actually making the effort! This was KZN's turn and next time - I'll more than lightly be the one travelling really far so it all works out.

Thanks guys for speaking english for me - I could understand the afikaans most of the time - but got a bit lost at times. I really appreciate it. All in all, everyone got on well!!!

So this PPL in other coutries is a braai! Not a BBQ! Not even similar! Braai - lots of meat. BBQ - burgers and sausage. Braai - tastey. BBQ - boring. Braai - more food and meat than you can handle. BBQ - same old stuff everytime.

Anyway - this is Harry flame cooking my porkie/banger/sausage.

Oh!!  Hey!  I need to make one thing VERY clear from the beginning - and I've said this before.  The weekend was NOT my idea!  I just took the liberty to start the thread for the weekend, to see if there was any interest.  So we arranged the weekend - all of us together.

The idea originally came from Oom Piet.  So if you need to thank anyone for the weekend - thank Oom Piet.  He was the instigator on this matter - not me 👍

Hey c'mon Zeldie, don't blame this weekend on me! :woot: You did everything and we are greatful BUT when the (picture) evidence starts to mount reflecting the mampoer drinking, I don't wan't to be held responsible by the fine management of RR! :scared:

@ Doug: Thanks for setting the record straight. It was so disappointing: we started a hike on the one mountain and everybody else was tired - something I couldn't figure: there were 3 other summits left, but I had to stop running up and down for no apparent good reason. 😕 It was scary hanging off that cliff though, I almost let the mampoer go.

A special thanks to all the RR buddies who went along, you were great and people to be proud of. Now we must just get the "renegades" to join up when next we do it. Thanks to all the "foreigners" who took special interest in us in SA, it was heart warming.

I will sort my pics tonight and see what I can come up with for this forum - promise.

Special thanks to the organisers as I stated in a previous upload. Nobody even spotted me cheating by posting a photo of the Tshipize mountains and not the Drakensberg. :blushing:

busi2ness posted Mon, 02 October 2006 at 2:50 PM

Vera was kind enough to explain a braai (pronounced "bry"), here is another: Mampoer, i.e. a powerful fruit-based (home) distilled brandy as South African as one can get.  For those who would like to know more about its origin: [ Groot-Marico](http://www.tourismnorthwest.co.za/central/groot_marico_mapoer.html) and [Mampuru](http://www.encounter.co.za/article/179.html)

Vera (after taking some mampoer from her gourd) talked to the black mamba snake and the poor thing was fumigated and petrified, she could touch its tail (is it a tale?)

Then there was Harry showing us new tripod techniques after having a sip...

DJB posted Mon, 02 October 2006 at 11:37 PM

Now I wish I had done the travel to be there. Looks like a riot. At first glance I thought  the use of this tripod was the after effects of  that mampoer.I see now the idea for it.

Apparently it was a Water snake.  Black mambas have a grey body and the name "black" comes from the colour of the roof of their mouth.

PeeWee05 posted Tue, 03 October 2006 at 2:12 AM

Well that makes sense coz he came from the dam...

I honestly heard the black mambas are actually green adn the name comes from the tongue - I think I need to go to the snake park to clear this up!!!

It is one of the (lesser) teams called the Glued Bulls. I also have in my posession, a valuable video clip showing her watching the game on TV, it is a sight to see indeed! Despite all the fun and photography, there was time to take stock of our past. The area is rich in history and all the major battle sites of the Aglo-Boer war (1899-1902) are well preserved and maintained. (Some are vandalised, yes!) We spared a thought for all the loved ones of the fallen soldiers.

I wish Michel (GiMi53) could be here to see the crosses on display.

Di, my good friend Vera (PeeWee05) was the brain behind the memorial sites. I must warn though that the memorial sites in that area,  necessitates a tour of its own and may take 3 days or more to cover. Some are hidden away on farms. I have not even scratched the surface. The scenery is excellent and offers great photographic opportunity.

I have sent GiMi53 (Michel) an invitation to visit and I am sure he will still do it if he hasn't.

Vera, rather not talk to the Oom about when his cam is arriving.  He's like a kid that can't wait for Xmas or his b'day giggle  No patience whatsoever ;0)

I learnt a few things too!  Andy showed me how a lens hood can take the sunspots away and even though I'm not sure he knows it, he showed me how the change of an f-stop can make the lights on an night photography shot sparkle.  Thanx Andy!!  And Oom Piet showed me how - even though I have a polarising filter on my cam - it actually works!  Yeah, silly me :tongue2:

Herman showed us all how a tripod actually works giggles myself silly  Vera showed me - after the weekend - how to make my presentation look better - Thanx tjom!!!

So I think overall we had a pretty good weekend!  Everyone learnt something and that's why we were there right?

busi2ness posted Tue, 10 October 2006 at 5:56 AM

Yes, I learnt that the mampoer cap, if used as a tot measure, .... :b_funny: Silly!

@Vera: My Canon is on its way! Maybe in a week's time! I just can not wait Zel!

I learnt, photography is hard work: You should be out where the action is (early), be it a sunrise/sunset or capturing Vera's owl, or the ducks on the pond, reflections in the water at night, no place for complacency.

I learnt quite a lot about my new camera by listening to what's been said about noise, lenses and F-stops while the three Canonnites had been in their trances. Andrew gave a couple of lectures on composition while he was bragging with his photos. Andrew is a computer geek and I was surprised to see the i-Pod-like gadget he had which contained all his photos - that is neat!

I learnt about good spirit to help each other enhance their skills - a rare commodity where competition rears its head. I also learnt that an entry level camera can produce excellent results in the hands of an eager to learn person - good work Harry!
