understanding whats being said is much more important than a few dozen mispelled words as lornas post demonstrates. the people who responded can ovbiously understand it even though the spelling is exaggeratingly wrong.....in fact the post defeats the object of it's purpose by proving bad spelling makes little difference to a post as far as understanding whats written is concerned.

It all comes down to the fact, in my humble opinion, that most folks are too anxious to answer, and can't wait long enough to re-read and edit/correct their spelling,  before clicking on the post reply button. I know I have been quilty of that in the past when after reading an obviously off-base post, and really wanting to set the record straight, I dash off a response and hit send before re- reading what I've just written. Also there's the 'fat finges syndrome' where fast unfocused typing will ghit 2 keys at once [ghit done for example...LOL]...many reasons but most solvable by re-reading and editing...if anyone cares to.....it's not a race so if we all slow down a nanosecond I feel certain the level of competence,[sp?no spell check here], spelling wise will rise

it's always been like this, in every forum I've ever seen. the reason is that it's a post-literate society. language changes over time, and earlier usage (e.g. "correct" spelling, punctuation and grammar) is forgotten. it's the natural course of the evolution of the species.

They do.  Most folks are unaware that unlike hardwired 'landline' telephones, cellular phones are actually handheld radio transceivers, and as such, emit high frequency RF radiation, just like a microwave oven, only on (slightly) lower frequencies.  There have been no conclusive studies linking prolonged cell phone use to cancer, however anecdotal evidence would seem to suggest that there is a correlation.  I'll continue using my old landline, thankyouverymuch, I can do without the brain tumor (and besides, my typing is bad enough already)!

I'm dyslexic and have an excuse for my bad spelling here.  Since they changed the forums, my spell checker doesn't work here because it relies on right clicking, which only shows cut/copy/paste here :(

I try hard to catch my spelling, but it's hard when to do when I'm seeing one thing and my brain is processing it as something else. Often I don't see my spelling until it's too  late to edit the post.

If my bad spelling at times bothers people, all I can say is "live with it, because I have to!"

Another factor for bad spelling is that not everyone here has English as their first language. I think it's awful to make fun of someone's spelling because you don't know the circumstances behind it. Yes, it could be laziness, but it could be something else.

Sometimes fractured syntax is deliberate -- as a matter of style, or else to emphasize a point.  People who are quick on the uptake can usually catch that.  But others -- more.......uh......literally minded -- occasionally get the idea that the words need to be taken at face value.  And that can lead to some misunderstandings.  Or to no cognizance of the humor involved.

I've had a number of Aussie-asians as friends in my lifetime.  In fact, one family was from Perth.  I was fascinated to discover that W.A.-asians and East Coast Aussie-asians don't particularly care much for each other.  One friend of mine who hailed from Sydney said something along the lines of 'he wouldn't care if all of W.A. fell off into the ocean' -- or words to that effect.

Years ago as a child a local TV station in my southern state carried Skippy the Bush Kangaroo as regular children's programming.  I can recall wondering why all of those people who lived in Florida had English accents.  The territory looked a lot like certain parts of Florida -- and the people in the show spoke with English accents.  But since coming to know a few Aussies in the intervening years, I eventually came to realize that they weren't from Florida.  In fact: they don't even have English accents.  I've also learned that the ancestors of all Aussies actually all came from a place called Botany Bay.  And a few others came from Van Diemen's Land.  IIRC, they changed the name to Tasmania..........out of embarassment...........or something.

One of my Aussie friends was kind enough to give me a world map as a gift.  It's a large map, meant to be stuck to your wall.  It's a little different from most other world maps that I've seen.......it features a large South Arrow (as distiguished from a North Arrow).  And it has the continent of Australia shown near the top of the world.

I suppose that it's all a matter of one's point of view.  Hey.......I even like the concept of a South Arrow displayed prominently on the map.  Because as we all know, deep southerners are great people.  And since Australis translates as "The South Land" -- I suppose that the people down there have got to have something to recommend them.  To say otherwise would be to go against nature.

One thing that I'm still not sure about, though -- do y'all speak English down there?  Just like we do?  I'll have to be sure to ask my Aussie friends about that the next time that I see them..........

At least one of our mods here claims to be from someplace called the UK.  I wonder if they speak English there?

XENOPHONZ posted Wed, 04 October 2006 at 2:58 PM

Well, let's see --

We've got:

New Zealand-English
Australian English
"Scottish" English
"Irish" English
American English (with many different variations/accents/dialects)
Canadian English ("We don't salute the leaf ! ", as I've heard one British Columbian quoted.)

.....and then of course -- we have English English -- which now must be distinguished from the rest by a double identification.

I understand the the French tend to regard the québécois as poor imitations of themselves.  Like one Parisian friend of mine who visited Quebec once said to me: "They sound funny."  And I further understand that the Parisian French tend to regard the Louisiana cajun folk claiming kinship to them as being something of an embarassment.

Also -- I've heard similar thoughts expressed concerning Castilian Spainish vs. South/Central-American Spainish.

So, it ain't jus' us poor southern folk who get our ways 'a talkin' looked down upon.  Hey -- everybody needs somebody else that they can feel superior to.  It's got something to do with human nature.  Or such has been my observation, anyway.

XENOPHONZ posted Wed, 04 October 2006 at 3:13 PM

BTW - I've heard somewhat differing accounts of this -- but I've seen news reports / read stories which indicate that identifying oneself too strongly as being "English" -- or for that matter, using the name "England" -- is somewhat un-politically correct these days.  I've heard that the accepted terms are now "British" or "UK".  Like, it's OK to be proudly Scottish or Irish -- but it's not OK to be proudly English.

IMO -- the English have a long and proud history.  So they have every right to proudly call themselves "English".

But I despise Political Correctness in all of its forms.  This being another one of those poisonous forms which so haunt the modern Western world.

...and yet you exhibit so much of it yourself, just the other kind.  DO stop hanging out at the Daily Mail website -- it will rot your mind (the symptoms are showing already).

The "accepted terms" of British or UK are as they are because those are what the nation is called -- Britain, or the United Kingdom.

"IMO -- the English have a long and proud history."   In your opinion. Well we'll take that into consideration.

My father was Welsh, but his family name (Pearce) is common in Cornwall, from whence tin-miners travelled to Wales as coal mining was more lucrative.   I was born in England, my mother's father was from Northern Ireland.  My father's mother's people came from Northumberland, on the north-east coast near the Scottish border, and more than likely had Viking ancestors, in common with many of the people in that part of the world on both sides of the border.  Oddly, my father, despite his English birth,  fought with the Black Watch regiment, an extremely Scottish outfit with an ancient and proud history, in WW2.

So, Xen, piss off and stop telling the Brits how to be British.  It's getting very, very, very, very boring and, more to the point, no fun anymore. Go wave your stars `n' bars for GWB.

EDIT: incidentally, you ARE aware that Ireland is an independent nation, so no connection with Britain?  No?  Thought not.

XENOPHONZ posted Wed, 04 October 2006 at 4:53 PM

Hmmmmm.......I seem to have touched a sore spot with that one.  Odd, that.  Some of the reports that I've seen must have at least a grain of truth to them, then.  How else to explain such an explosive reaction?

I've not read the Daily Mail beyond once or twice.  But upon your recommendation: I might start paying more attention to it.

I'd never dream of "telling the Brits how to be British".  Nor have I made any efforts to do so.  But I won't hesitate to make my own observations on that -- or on any other -- subject.

I'll pass on the more political items.  Here.

I wasn't trying to ruin your day, pearce.  Really, I wasn't.  Did your dog die today?  Break up with your girlfriend?  Sorry if any of those scenarios are the case.

Sounds like a truly great news source. 😉  I'll have to take a closer look.

So I see that all is not calm in paradise -- y'all have your own center-right conservatives over there, too.  Most likely: far more so than on the continent (the continentals tend to be on the extreme fringes either way).

Irritatin' folks, ain't they -- those center-righters?  They have a habit of shading (or coloring) the sweet illusions of utopia with the nastiness of ugly reality.  And that's never any fun for the dreamers.  Being shaken awake tends to make people mad.

But I'll leave it.........

Thanks again for recommending the Daily Mail so strongly.  Perhaps they'll hire me as an editorial writer.  I'll mail my resume right away............uh......can I use you as a character reference?  Thanks!

That's alright -- if guns aren't handy, then machetes will do to hack to death around 500,000 people are so.  Locking the populations of entire villages into church buildings and setting the buildings on fire works, too.  Like what happened in Rwanda just a few years ago.

Oh -- the original concept was ancient.  But that doesn't detract from what Otis did.  Nor does it negate the original point that he called the device which he created an elevator.

You could as well argue that Otis couldn't have invented the elevator without earlier developments in metallurgy.  Or that the Wright brothers couldn't have invented the airplane without someone else inventing the internal combustion engine first -- or without ancient weavers figuring out the techniques for creating canvas-like materials first (to fabricate the shell of the aircraft.).  So what?  The Wright brothers still invented the airplane -- and Otis invented the elevator.

BTW - one effect of guns is to equalize.  In a chaotic world where swords & spears are the standard -- only the strong can prevail.  That's one reason why guns were originally looked down upon by some as a coward's weapon.  It's no fun when a powerful, 300lb giant of a man can be easily taken down by an 80lb. child with a gun.  That sort of thing can make like tough on gangs of big, strong guys with machetes.  It's much, much easier to slaughter the sheep when the sheep aren't armed -- and can shoot back.

Compared to what they had before that -- it was an airplane.

IIRC, some group of guys recently attempted to duplicate the historic flight at Kitty Hawk -- in a mock-up of the original Wright Brothers plane.  I don't know if they succeeded or not.  Someone could probably do a google and find out, if interested.

they didn't invent the plane...they had the first recorded flight and even thats dubious lol.

the same as bell didn't invent the telphone, he just got credit for it. and otis still didnt invent the lift.  an effect of the maybe to equalize but it wasn't the reason of it's development yes i know colt..the reat equalizer.......it's wasn't such an equalizer when it came to a gattling gun was it hehe...guns and weapons in general were made for killing. ...not a bad thing if your being attacked or defending something and not all wars were bad.  metalergy wasn't an invention it was a discovery.

so otis stole other peoples ideas created a brake and called it an elevater. marconi invented the radio...not ...logi baird the televison of cathode raytube....not...eddison the light bulb.....not and ad infinitum.......history is written by the victor.......but it isn't always accurate.  ten years before bell did the telephone thing a german guy living in the usa had his house wired and spoke with his wife from different rooms.  some other poor taw had created light round a filiment way before eddison even had the idea. marconi was way behind with his piece of wire and a wax tube and the wright brothers come way down when it comes to inventing the plane........remember an invention doesn't have to have worked. a reproduction of da vinci's plane worked so i can/t see how the wright  brothers were able to go back in history....oops i forgot...they invented the time machine as well hehe

...if guns aren't handy, then machetes will do to hack to death around 500,000 people are so.  Locking the populations of entire villages into church buildings and setting the buildings on fire works, too.  Like what happened in Rwanda just a few years ago.

...or Darfur, just yesterday.  I wish people around the world would stop blaming inanimate objects (guns, machetes, roadside bombs, the list goes on and on...) for violence.  Hatred and intolerance are to blame, and until those issues and the people who practice them have been dealt with decisively, the killing will continue to perpetuate itself; no matter whether the instument is a high velocity piece of metal, high temperature pieces of atom, or the proverbial jawbone of an ass.

**It astounds me, how little the human race has progressed in conflict resolution in our thousands of years of 'civilization' (and I use the term *very * loosely!). **

Ah, yes -- that's all true.  Every bit of history that we've ever been taught or told is 100% fabrication.  In fact: nobody ever invented anything.  Hey -- Shakespeare didn't even write the plays that he's credited with writing.  As everyone knows: somebody else wrote them all -- and Mr. Shakespeare stole them.  Edison didn't invent the light bulb -- it was actually invented in Uganda by a tribal witch doctor.  And Bell had nothing whatsoever to do with the telephone.  The Romans had telephones centuries before Bell was even born !

Yes, the Wright brothers were in reality a couple of con men who made up a fancy story.  They didn't invent anything.  That's why airplanes were everywhere within a few short years after the Wright brother's so-called "flight".  Everybody else already knew about airplanes -- they just hadn't gotten around to building them yet.

History is defined by nothing but a series of conspiracies.  Things are never what they seem.  Pretty soon, some genius will write a book letting us all know that Ghengis Khan was actually one of history's great humanitarians.  Much like the thinking recently concerning the Vikings.  No -- we were told -- the Vikings weren't the brutal, bloodthirsty murderers which contemporary accounts of them describe -- rather, the Vikings were in reality nothing but peaceful farmers & settlers.  Nice folks.  Wouldn't hurt a fly.  You'd want a medieval Vikiing for your neighbor.  Yep.  Political correctness has seeped its poison into historical interpretation, too...........

So....today's lesson, folks: everything that you've ever learned in your life is a lie.  Some guy in Sevastopol actually invented the PC.  It wasn't any of those......Americans.

BTW - nothing ever created by Man has been 100% original.  Other people 'invented' the houses that most of us live in.  But that doesn't translate into the builders of the houses getting the credit for the Poser renders that we've done while living in those same houses.

It would be an odd bit of sophistry to to attempt to attribute the Poser renders to the builders of the houses.........rather than to the people who posed & rendered the scenes.  But, stretch a point far enough -- and the resulting extreme distortion might end up convincing a few weak-minded types that Julius Caesar invented the automobile.

There's been a conspiracy in place ever since -- a conspiracy to rob Mr. Caesar of his proper credit.

you said all the above not i. no mention of cons or anything else. just some documented facts. bell flew the first flight 9 days before the wright brothers were accredited with it. and history is defined by the historians of the time....to say they;re always right ...now that would a be a conspiracey.....it's very easy to take something to extremes and make what another said look silly isn't it lol.....it means jack shit of course but it's easy to do. and to say nothing invented was ever original...mmmm nice concept but lacking in truth or fact. and where does who get the credit evaluate into who invented something...they either invented it or they didn't, saying they did doesn't make it so, but of course you're an officianado on inventions, or is that just a conspiracey theory as well. you can beileve the wright brothers invented the plane....and i can believe they didn't........the facts i think lay with the dates of the first recorded flight. ....that a persons 500 year old design when built in the 20th century worked is also a conspiracey theory i guess. it never really happened never really got filmed happening...it's all an illusion. if you think it about political correctness thats okay too. personally i think it's about truth and facts not about who was or wasnt there or who did or didn't enter a compitition or because a leading news paper says something to further its circulation. jmo opinion of course lol

somehow i doubt even i could stretch your last paragraph to fit said scenario. though you did a pretty good attempt.....poorly :P

Another thought on the Wright Brothers - they weren't credited as "inventing the airplane" - they were credited with "the first successful flight". MANY poeple tried making successful airplanes/flying machines throughout history, but the Wright Brothers supposedly made the first repeatable (apparently the detriment of Bell's flight?) successful flight.

DaVinci's design may have worked, but no one tested it out until... Yeah, the Wright Brothers tested their design before DaVinci... Hence, the credit.

This thread has gone WAY OT - back to the original post, was anyone aware that there's a movement going on to teach phonetic English writing instead of what we are using right now?

Can U C? R U ther?

Yes, people are currently saying that traditional English is too hard to spell correctly (meaning they're too lazy to learn - good luck at a University!), and are trying to get schools to change how they teach to match cell-phone texting...

Yes, I realize things change over time but... I fear for the future...

You seem very personally attached to this...

Yeah, Pearce even flew for a kilometer - that is huge news - and often landed in a hedge. Regardless, you don't need footage to know what he did was magnificent.

Again, MANY people throughout history tried to create successful repeatable flight - don't bother mentioning a kite (yes, I'm aware they've been around for centuries) since it can't carry a person. That's not what is being discussed (even thought the actual topic is proper spelling or lack therof in the forums... and has somehow migrated to historical innacuracies concerning modern air flight...).

I guess I should have been more specific - it's not the engine (you guys were arguing about something else - re-read MY post where an engine is not mentioned at all), and it's not the fact that a person went up in the air and came back down (properly, or stopped by bushes). The Wright Brothers (why do we capitalize "Brothers" BTW - I've always wondered that?) made something repeatable by being able to accurrately TURN to steer away from the bushes and back onto the clear strip of land they wanted to safely land on. Apparently Pearce made turns, but I wonder how much he controlled them, or how much control he actually HAD at all?

The WB's (see there, see what I did, the phonetics thing...? okay, it's not phonetics, it's an abbreviation much like the apparently disapproved of American States' names - see argument above) actually built the flaps for steering - having (YES) taken from basic plane designs from others, all the way back to the simply notion of how an object like a kite uses wind for flight.

Phonetic spelling... Anyone care to gripe about THAT? Gotta tell you, it scares me to think of my future medical records having to be translated by a 14yr old the doctors will need to hire to make sense out of things for the patients (namely ME - "What does 'U hav Knser' mean?).

Yes, it's become something of an intellectual fad in recent years to de-bunk the history which most everyone previously accepted.  I suspect that certain historians were in part just getting bored -- and in part wanting to re-interpet historical events based upon current intellectual faddish thinking (read: political correctness).  Oh, well......every age that's come & gone was always been convinced that they were far, far superior to their primitive ancestors.

Da Vinci did many things in his lifetime.  I've yet to see a claim that he ever flew.  I have heard claims that Japanese ninja used the equivalent of hang-gliders in centuries past.  But insofar as I know the "facts" involved are just that: claims.  Much like Bell's "flight".

The flights of Dec. 17, 1903, by the Wrights at Kitty Hawk happened just nine days after Langley's last failure. The event was unreported and mostly unnoticed. What the public knew was that $50,000 of their tax money had been wasted by Langley's fiasco. It would be almost another five years before powered flight would be demonstrated to the skeptical press and public.

http://www.memagazine.org/flight03/trialby/trialby.html

It's only possible to make things look silly when they are silly.

I'd say that being the first successful flyers allows the Wrights to claim to be the inventors of the device involved.  Regardless of who the other also-rans happen to be.  The also-rans didn't succeed first.  The Wrights did.

Quote - the facts i think lay with the dates of the first recorded flight.

True.  One could conceivably claim that the first Brooklyn-bridge jumper enjoyed a successful flight.  I suppose.

And oh yeah......I should add that conspiracy theories are quite popular nowadays.  Everyone seems to be seeking for the hidden truth behind events -- convinced that some gang of evil, hidden masterminds are meeting in underground bunkers & plotting to take over the world.

The really handy aspect about "hidden truths behind events" is that those "hidden truths" can be basically whatever the 'truth-seeker' wants for them to be.  And how can anything be handier than that?

Many of those things before today are flying, so were planes?
The plane is a sucession of improvements, someone tried to fly as a bird, didn't worked not enough force, later someone put a steam engine, to heavy to fly. The Wright Brothers improved a lot, they put an internal combustion engine but was not enough, only when Santos Dumont put a gas turbine it was achieved the required power/weight ratio for a plane be able to fly by itself.

I agree (and I also have problems with many other spelling errors)...

My reason?
"Your" = "Belonging to you".
"You're" = "You are".
Two totally different meanings. OK, they sound the same, and in context they can usually be differentiated, but sometimes not (as in "Your stupid friend" as opposed to "You're stupid friend" (although the latter should really be punctuated as "You're stupid, friend".)

It's a lack of attention to detail. Try getting away with that in a picture, and you get pounced on. Why should language be different?

Of course, I have always thought that the Americans can't spell proper, like what we Brits can, but hoo no's hoos rite?

billy423uk posted Fri, 06 October 2006 at 6:38 PM

The english language is a beautifull thing.  Why is this?

One of the reasons is the fact that a written word derives most of its context and power from the words that surround it. your on its own defines who it belongs to. The conjunction of you are written as your'e defines an action of what you does.

If you write either word in the singular then the correct spelling matter or else all meaning and context is lost.

Now for the beauty of the language. Using a word with anthor word gives the word, or any word in question extra power and us more information. Your here and you're here become the same phrase. Though the  spelling and grammar of  YOU"RE may be wrong the additional word tells the readder what YOUR means, we read it as YOU ARE.

For literate native speakers of english the brain gives the real intention of the misspelled written word when said word is used with others. That we see the difference of said words and kow that in some instances, one should be swapped for another shows we understand the meaning,

In the phrase YOUR STUPID FRIEND, again the beauty of the language comes into play. as a phrase on its own i suppose it would be ambiguous. our language allows that, (as does our brain.) If we know who it's from or what it's in response to we can usually work out it's context.  If it's part of a greater story we could definitely make the phrase work for us.

Heres where language, any other langue gets even more beautiful. If someone sent in a post that wasn't a response to another post (which i doubt they would). The brain would say. "I'm not sure what this means, I think i'll ask".

Wheres the beauty of language in that statement you may wonder. Well the beauty lies in the ability of language to what it ws intended to do. To communicates. Not only does it convey a words meaning or intent. It has the power to diverge and create non itentional communication. It has the powr to ask questions.

99.999999999999999999999999% of the time though something is spellled wrongly, we know and understand it's intent. The odds are that if we didn't understand it, we wouldn't have were it spelled correctly.

When i post here, i'm usually fitting the post inbewteen something else i should be doing. i make mistakes. Things like the two preceding small i's instead of capital I's, I spell words wrong and make typos and mistakes. If i use  spell checker I could only respond to half the posts i do, maybe less.

As for placing an image in a gallery being the same. Is it?  Or are we putting an image on show. Expecting feed back or praise from its appearance. Do we expect praise for our spelling or grammar when we respond or place a post in a thread. Has anyone ever said. "Nice bit of spelling there Mary Jane". Art is not like the written word though at times the written word can be like art. We take from art our own impression of what it is and what it means to us. we take from the written word, except when it pertains to be art (poetry for example), specifics that are intended for everyone else who sees the writing to take. jmo

P.S. Note the wrong spelling of beautiful in places. Did it detract from what was said?

The phrase "your stupid friend" can have a number of different meanings -- depending upon emphasis, inflection, and tone.  Spelling and punctuation can help to clarify which meaning is intended:

Your stupid friend. (You have a friend who is stupid)
You're stupid.......friend. (You might be stupid, but you are still my friend.  And I still like you.)
You're stupid, friend. (You aren't my friend, but you are stupid)
You're stupid, friend. (It's not me who is the stupid one.  It's you.)
You're STUPID, friend. (The primary aspect of your personal character which stands out is that you are stupid.)

Well -- I see that we've yet to agree upon who it was that invented the airplane.  The people who flew one, or the people who imagined / thought about flying one?  Or the people who improved upon the design of the original two who actually did fly one?

These are deep matters.  The fate of Western Civilization hinges upon our answer to this burning question.  In this forum.

The story gets more complicated, if you watch the old movies of those crazy inventions that ended in failure and crashed, you will find that many of them are flying today.
Many were not bad inventions, some of them excellent, the problem was the technology and materials available in those times that were too heavy. Today with our technology, plastics, aluminium and other metals or fibers, what once was unable to fly, is flying!
Inventions sometimes needs centuries to become reality, Roman knew the power of steam, even did some engines, but it was needed to wait much more than a milenium for the invention of steel for making steam machines a reality, without steel, no steam motor!!
The invention of the plane is nothing more than a political question, Americans says that American did, English that British, French that French and Brasilians that were Brasilians. I, that am nothing of all this, I say that nobody invented the plane!

They seem to hush this stuff up rather quickly for some reason, probably because no one likes to hear about how our wonderful technology we all seem to need so much and enjoy so immensly might actually be in any way, shape or form bad for us too.

Common sense logic would dictate all this magnetic field we're subjected to day in and day out must have some affect on us, but who cares, it's necessary and fun!

If there's a lack of ability, we understand completely and work harder at understanding the intended message - it's those that do not even TRY to get it right, assuming we'll all just work harder to mutter through bad spelling (not necesarily grammar, it seems) to vaguely figure out what they're trying to tell us.

Little things like "yer" never bug me (as I was, oddly, griping about phonetic written language  - but then again, I was mostly griping about it being taught in schools INSTEAD OF the way language is written right now).
I call them "cutesy" spelling and I always thought they were just that - not a hindrance to understanding, but just cute.

Still scared about the medical records though - "What does, 'UR mptint' mean...?"

when we speak the language we don't speak it perfectly, why should the writing be any different. if this were a job application it would prob be the best i could do. when speaking we say your, which is only given context by the words around it. we dont say you comma re.  we say its or its..both the same with diff meanings. according to some here, we should say it is....

The gripe of the thread is knowing the rules and ignoring them.
Yes, in speech MANY words and conjunctions are identical, which is YOUR point.

When email first started becoming big, educational experts theorized that it would help literacy and writing skills. Instead we're changing to more phonetic spellings - yes this is a more natural evolution given the process being used, but that is the gripe of this thread.

We are not proofreading ourselves very well, or at all (I'm very guilty of this myself), and then defending why we don't (instead of trying to get better at our written communication skills). Whether or not we're typing in a rush or have time to compose with more clarity, we are hoping to make sure our messages are properly spelled so that nothing detracts from said message.

When someone types a message that is filled to the brim with errors (be they grammatical or spelling) we tend to start to focus not on the message, but just the errors, and the message is lost or misconstreud.

Side note: I wonder if this is the case more and more in any non-English speaking forums. Does anyone know of any German/French/Russian/insert ANY language forum where the spelling and grammer are getting worse? Just because WE are all typing in English (and pointing out errors) doesn't mean this isn't happenning elsewhere.

I see that this thread is still alive.  Well.....as I've got nothing better to do at the moment, I suppose that I should do my little bit to help it along again.  It's our duty to humanity.

Quote - i refuse the mantle, it's yours by right of whatever.

No, no, no.........please take it.  You get the mantle: gilded in gold glit and everything.  Just remember that it's "dry clean only".  Throw it in the washer & it'll fall apart.

Quote - as for the taking part. i felt that if ineedy your life was so mundane, i should make an effort for it to continue..so nothing odd there, just me trying to hel[p out a friend lmao it seems i love this also though i can't do the silly face :(

my _________, friend. (more deciphering)

i went shopping

ps i just know you really do giggle when you read these replies.

billy

As a matter of fact, I get a lot of laughs out of this stuff.  It can brighten up an otherwise mundane workday.

So we now know that the airplane was actually invented by the English, the Germans, and the New Zealanders.

How does that old joke go.........?

A great society would consist of:

An English policeman
A German engineer
A French cook

A horrible society would consist of:

An English cook
A German policeman
A French engineer

Or so I've heard.........in several different variations.

Here's another:

*The captain has to try to convince men to jump overboard in order to have enough room for all the women and children. So, he tailors his announcements to each nationality...

For the English, he announces, "It's the sporting thing to do," and all the Englishmen jump overboard.
For the Germans, he announces, "I order it!" and all the Germans jump overboard.
For the Italians, he announces, "Don't do it! It's illegal!" and they all jump overboard.
For the Japanese, he announces, "Everybody's doing it," and they jump overboard.
And for the Americans, he announces, "Don't worry, you're insured!" and, you've guessed it, they all jump overboard.*

Let's see.....spelling, spelling......well, Billy -- you've got a certain style.  I'll give you that.  Actually, when I first came across your posts in the forums I had to read two or three of them before I came to the conclusion that you are razor-minded (as in you obviously shave your brain).

i don't shave it . kike ny hair parts of it keep falling out. i have to read my own posts two or three times and worse at reading than i am at spelling hehe. truth be told i love the written word though my spelling does kinda suggest otherwise.

the good list should have included a swedish au pair and an irish drinking partner.

and i really do enjoy reading what you have to say. no come back on what kind of brain you have yet it's a tad harder than mine to decipher though you have an inate sense of humore which is always good, lmao.

To me, Billy: forum debates are a mere diversion.  Frankly, electronic discussions with people that you really don't know -- while the discussions can be interesting -- they are basically meaningless in the personal realm.

You're (your?) pretty sharp.  You just need a good spell checker (like I do).  But that would serve to rob you of your (you're?) forum style.

Some of the smartest people that I've ever known couldn't spell.......but I've also heard that the use of language is a major factor in generating good first impressions.  If someone can say something well: then it doesn't matter so much that what they are saying is -- in actuality -- utter nonsense.  It sounds good: so that leads others to conclude that the person speaking knows what they are talking about.  Likewise, someone who doesn't communicate well might be the greatest genius of our era -- but their manner of speech can prevent others from realizing that fact.

I can sense your sense of humor, too.  And I don't sense genuine hostility coming from you.  It's more like friendly ribbing -- or at least that's the way that I read it.......and that's the way that it's intended in all of my return lobs.

i think calling them a diversion is as good as any other name.  i usually divert between whatever i'm doing on the pc at a given time. it breaks the time up lol.

i also agree that our first words often are a major part of a first impression depending on who's making the first impression about who. i must say, i've never had to write anything that needed to make a good impression but i have and am able to write much bettter than i appear to.  i think it's the rush factor and lack of typing skill that cocks up what i say. i'm much to lazy to spell check, i have been known to edit a typo  though.

thanks for seeing the lack of mailce. and for diverting me, it's way way i took your posts as well. as for electronics...i can bullshit with the best of them but not about electronics . now religion,  i'll take any side in a religious debate. ( diversion)..it's so forgiving when you cock up lol.

"we've yet to agree upon who it was that invented the airplane"

Oh sod it. I've been away in London for the last week or so but, in the spirit of the forum's topic, I'd just like to point out that the "airplane" has yet to be invented, since what the Wright brothers (or that Pearce fella) are credited with inventing is properly called an "aeroplane".

Well, I'm also dyslexic... so is my son and one of my nephews... not being able to spell well does NOT quantify a persons intelegence level... want to see my mensa membership???

what does quantify a persons IQ is their lack of understanding and intollerence of a disability!

thundering1 posted Thu, 26 October 2006 at 10:26 PM

Dyslexic as well - went unchecked until around 4th grade.

129 - give or take 5. Intelligence is also subjective to personal strengths - while math and music are actually side by side, a genius at math and a genius at music are 2 VERY different people.

No one is saying anything about "lack of intelligence" in this thread (that I can remember anyway - but I'm pretty sure) - laziness is the general complaint.

Really - the anti-grav machine listed there is gonna change the movie industry forever! And moving companies! And the Postal Service - watch them go insane trying to figure out postage! They're bound to go... well... Postal!

You have to consider that some people are bad spellers to due some form of disability and can not help having bad spelling even though they do try. There are some learning and developmental disabilities which have poor spelling as a component I am not saying this is strictly that case for any of the members here at Renderosity, but it is a possibility to be considered.

Regards to you.
