Subject: poser 7 - 64 bit?

acottted ( ) posted Fri, 20 October 2006 at 12:34 AM · edited Thu, 15 August 2024 at 8:32 AM

does anyone know if poser 7 can do 64 bit windows? since render ram has long been the killer limit on all poser renders, one might think they would go there, but then, what do I know about product development?

By inference, it would appear it is OK to use 32-bit OS.
Does that mean that a 64-bit OS would also be able to run it ?

I don't think EF has said anything as of yet about P7 being 64-bit.   We'll see....

Just wake me up when "Reason 7" come along.
Don't get me wrong, I love Poser, but all this second guessing is so boring.
Just wish they'd release it  and cut the hype. Talk about a soap opera!

They have not said...When asked directly they decline to answer which means one of two things...

either it isn't and they don't want to listen to the backlash/whining/complaining

or (more likely IMO) it is one of the features that will be anounced in the run up to the release date.

I'm guessing they'll wait to release a 64-bit SR-patch when some large percentage of their clients have 64-bit machines (3rd quarter 07). I dunno how many of their clients currently have 64-bit machines with 64-bit OS. possibly very few. maybe they could do a poll.

svdl ( ) posted Fri, 20 October 2006 at 1:39 PM

If the machine (either PC or Mac) is younger than 2 years, it'll be 64bit hardware.

Mac OSX Tiger has a 64 bit version, Panther and older are 32 bit (AFAIK, I'm not a Mac guy)

Windows 64 bit exists, but isn't as widespread. There's a 64 bit version of Windows XP, and Vista will be out in a few months. Many users have 64 bit hardware but still run 32 bit Windows.

The big shot 3D apps already exist in 64 bit versions. Vue 6 Infinite will be 64bit/32 bit. Carrara is already 64 bit AFAIK.

3D apps are a good reason to switch to a 64bit OS. They're CPU hungry and extremely memory hungry, so this is the kind of apps for which 64bit really makes sense. I'm not exactly waiting for a 64 bit word processor or mail program, the current 32bit versions do their job fine and fast, even on a somewhat older/slower machine.

So e-frontier would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did NOT release Poser 7 as a 64 bit application. It would probably be smartest if they delivered it in a hybrid format, both 64bit and 32 bit, just like Vue 6 infinite will be delivered, just like Vista will be delivered, just like any other 64 bit app is being delivered.

As for me, I'm running WinXP 32bit on Athlon64/Sempron64 machines. I will only upgrade to Windows 64 bit when I can get 64 bit 3D applications.

Uhm, by the way, I've tested the WinXP 64bit trial with Poser 6. Runs just as well as on WinXP 32bit. Same limitations, same stability, same speed.

Not necessarily. My CoreDuo laptop is brand new and has a 32bit CPU. > Quote - Mac OSX Tiger has a 64 bit version, Panther and older are 32 bit (AFAIK, I'm not a Mac guy)

The 64bit support in Tiger is, IMHO, a joke. None of the even remotely interesting system features can be used from a 64bit app in Tiger.

I THINK I actually have a 64 bit system. But since I'm still running WinXP Home (which came with the computer) I'm also still running 32 bit.

I wouldn't like a Poser 7 that REQUIRED me to change to Vista. I'll most likely change to Vista next time I buy a computer, providing that's what come preinstalled... but until then... no. I have better things o use my money for. Poser content for instance LOL

Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.

All Intel Core Duo CPUs have the EMT64 architecture - 64 bit. Including the Mobile versions.

Though most PCs are still delivered with a WinXP 32bit version, usually Home, sometimes Pro.

I have an intel imac dual core 1 (feb 06). although there's nothing anywhere in the "more info" screens that the local mac genius could find to confirm it's 32-bit, I know it's 32-bit, as only the recent (july 06) intel core duo 2 machines have 64-bit processors. and of course only the mac xeon towers can hold more than 3 GB RAM; imac users are stuck with 3 GB for the time being.

As far as I know, only the Core 2 Duo chips have that. Intel documents the Core Duo chip as IA-32 architecture.

svdl ( ) posted Fri, 20 October 2006 at 5:39 PM

The Core 2 Duo chips are also IA-32. ALL x386, x486 and Pentium CPUs have the IA32 architecture. EMT64 means 64 bit extensions.

IA-64 is a completely different processor architecture. The Itanium CPUs are IA-64, and have completely different compilers, a completely different instruction set, and are completely incompatible with the Pentium series. The Itanium CPUs are used (sparingly, they're not that popular yet) in high end servers.

Look at http://indigo.intel.com/compare_cpu/default.aspx?familyID=1&culture=en-US, and you'll see that most modern Pentium 4 CPUs have EMT64 - which means that they can run 64 bit operating systems and applications.

Pentium 4, yes. Core 2 Duo, yes. Core Duo, no. I wish my Core Duo laptop had EMT64, but trust me, it doesn't.
