Since everyone else seems to have been frozen into submission I thought I'd begin chiselling away at the ice and commence the next seasonal haiku challenge.
If you're new to the scene the idea is to fashion together a 5-7-5 syllable haiku using the last word of the previous haiku as the first word of the next.
I'll start the snowball rolling shall I ...

Winter has arrived;
Don your skates, go grab that sleigh,
Snowflakes fill the skies.

Sorry about the delay mamabobbijo, I guess I was dispirited by the lack of enthusiasm this once thriving series of haiku threads used to enjoy. I'm grateful to know that there's still people out there that are keen to participate. (Thanks also to you SueKlaus, nice work.)
Now, on with more haiku action. Keep those contributions coming ... 😄

Are we still doing winter? I mean obviously you are but does the challenge remain the same? I love yours by the way. OK, Can they have more than one verse?

Strange days indeed!

In Massachusetts,
the winter,this year, brings us;
heat, rain, and flowers.

In California,
there was over a foot of snow!
What is a defrost?

Perhaps the Earth has
tilted off it's axis. Pluto
gains it's grand revenge!

I'm back! Glad to read that I've been missed (it makes one feel all warm and fuzzy inside).
Sorry everyone about the hampered approach to my haiku contributions of late but I don't jump online all that often (though I suspect that will change in the not-too-distant future when I have cable within my grasp - drool).

hanevi: As it so happens I have indeed been nutting out yet another instalment of the ongoing (and seemingly unceasing) Alliteration Challenge, of which you can view here. As you can see they're becoming increasingly excessive. ;)
And yeah, where's that favourite literary sparring partner of mine, Margana? I'm sure she'll make an appearance before long.

Dinhi: Just a friendly reminder that a true haiku conforms to the 5-7-5 syllable rule, meaning the syllable count of the first and third lines should each total five syllables, and the second line a total of seven syllables. Wonderful imagery otherwise! Keep up the great work. :)

Lovely compositions everyone. I'm heartened to witness this sudden unexpected burst of enthusiasm for the haiku challenge once more. 😉

syllables form rainbow hued,
winter Haiku thread

Just a little tribute to Drekinn, one of the most intrepid Haiku people I've come across. My addiction pales in comparison, though its more closet! Thanks Drekinn for keeping the threads going since those summer months!

I have a collection of Japanese Haiku masters and, interestingly, a few of them occasionally break the syllable rule. Apparently, it's allowed, though it seems irregular, where the beauty and depth of the sentence can't be compromised to syllables, but they're rare. Sticking to the rule in our thread is helpful to build writing discipline, and also a greater challenge to get just the right word. :) I often find the 3-5-3 very challenging for the same reason, and also to explore Zen minimalistic concepts.

Where's Jon (jstro)? haven't seen him in a while...

White and cold delight;
Rising moon light flickers bright;
Walk with me tonight.

I forgot about the rhyming element, fun twist

Tonight full moon's rise.
Damp in the air, moonbeams make,
magical moonbow.

Working on a poem, a myth from chilhood, it involves a moonbow. It was on my mind.

Dinhi posted Thu, 01 February 2007 at 5:40 PM

Moonbow wrapped up tight;
Holding on to dreams tonight,
tomorrow we dance.

I have never heard the term BJ, I can only think of the moon hugging the stars.  I used to love to dream about the man on the moon as a child....  I cannot wait to read your poem!

Dance around your soul
Tonight I will lose myself
A feast of colours

Blue to red, orange to green,
they dance in the snow.

Think, drift, doze, fireplace.
Inviting dreamy travels,
while cuddling here.

It has reached below zero for the third day in a row. BRRR!

yet what do I know of snow?
sand-white, downy flakes...

Day breaks this chill'd night;
spring breathes warmth down winter's neck.
Melting heart of snow.

On days like today, not  cloud in the sky, blue, not cold, not warm, a slight chill in the air in February, my northern friends huddled indoors dreaming of Spring... I know- this is why I live in Florida!

mamabobbijo posted Thu, 08 February 2007 at 4:56 PM

Snow falls, covers all.
No ugliness here for now.
White and pure, magic!

My sister lives in FLA, she's digging out of the tornado damage right now so she's not laughing quite as loud over my three inches of snow.

Dinhi posted Thu, 08 February 2007 at 5:29 PM

Magic fills the air;
Clear and crisp deep snow covers;
The children know joy.

Wow BJ, your right!  DeLand got socked pretty good twice this year!  Glad to hear no one was harmed.

Joy to catch a cold:
Stuffy nose and mucus flows;
Worse things go untold.

Marshmallows hearthside:
toasted, browning edges, hot.
Sugar on my tongue.

No marshmallows in my river city today... high in the 70s. Winter is slipping away to unveil a dream of spring... or something like that!

Dinhi posted Tue, 13 February 2007 at 1:00 PM

Tongue cleansed by warm milk;
Belly filled by marshmallows;
Oh sweet sugar high!

Yes the beautiful day rips on outside and my pool begs for me to put some shock in, chlorine and the new cover.  They say our weather will change tonight back to cold...rats.....

Air freezes your breath
cold makes your nose run, sleet falls
Who'll dig out my car?

We're finally getting a real nor'easter here. Not happy at all. I can't get to my daughters to babysit, but work is across the street for her so she's always expected in. My grand daughter is out in this mess being a child! I am missing it all. My car doors are frozen shut! Tonight it will be really bad! Sorry to see the temperature may dip to the low sixties in FLA, try to stay warm, chin up.

Car windows open,
breeze whipping around my hair.
Florida Winter.

I feel your pain, BJ. And it probably would just be annoying to tell you its 65 here now, sunny with blue skies though we've been waiting for our brand of winter to return... it's held off unexpectedly for a couple of soul refreshing days. Even here, this weather is a surprise for February. But take heart- it'll be down to 20s by Friday and Saturday. Then I'll have to replace my sleeveless tank with a turtleneck and wool socks and hope not to get sick from all this weather ping-pong... though I'll take it any day!

Stay safe and warm where you are.

Winter brings cold air;
Those that challenge where they live,
will feel the bite yet!

I will take what they call bitter cold here in Jacksonville Florida any day, I used to be shoveling my butt out of many feet of snow.....

upon our so rosy cheeks...

I agree... even never having lived in such a snowy climate. But this morning's weather sent me scrambling to Starbucks for a cup on my way to work! ;-)

Aches inside my heart
beg for Winter's freezing touch.
At last this pain sleeps.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.. Two days ago I was thinking about drinks with umbrellas. Today it's a steaming cup of warmness in my cold hands. Funny the difference a day can make!

Applaud spring,
For it gathers near.
Tulips bud.

I hope you don't mind, I took some liberty with your ending word. I am working on a poem for your other challenge, by the way. Of course by the time I finish it there will be a new entry already posted and I'll have to start over. And don't forget the Love Challenge. Surely all you haiku aficionados can come up with a passionate haiku or two for the Challenge. So far there are only two entries, and February is almost over!

jstro: Ah great, I await your poem with anticipation; remember, it's perfectly ok to submit your poem even if one has already been posted (just make sure not to elect a new title), as it would be a waste of your creative efforts and I'm sure everyone would enjoy reading it.
Please submit soon as I'm eager to tackle the next poetic challenge. 😉

Hmm... should we begin a new haiku thread on the topic of 'Spring' (again), or is it time for a non-seasonal haiku challenge?
