stormchaser ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 7:02 AM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
I could cry, my system froze with my download at 80%. I have to start all over again.
A download of this size without resume is a complete joke!

I was done hours ago actually, I'm installing all the content that I know I will want to use, props and junk.

Quote - I wonder if you can zip the file as a split zip so you can fit it on cd to back it up? Just a thought until you can get a dvd burner. I grabbed one at Sams club was really inexpensive.

pjz99 - I was using getright, but it couldn't give me a resume because the server wasn't supporting it!
I am gutted, absolutely gutted. I was so looking forward to having a go this afternoon.

Yes, hang in there stormchaser!
I kept at it until 6 am this morning. Had to start over and over but finally it got it all.

Oh I'm sorry...

That is really frustrating for you, Stormchaser...... :0(

Deep breath and go again when you have regained enough patience!

Thanks fellow poser addicts.
I've calmed down now & restarted. If it happens again I'm jumping in the canal!

bopperthijs ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 8:28 AM

...still 5 minutes to go  so I'm keeping my fingers crossed, It took me about 7 hours to download inspite of my DSL-connection. I don't understand why they didn't  break it up in some smaller pieces, so you wouldn't have start all over again...

Okay 1,5 minutes to go... wait a little longer before posting.

Phew! yeah I got it.. now first storing it in a safe place and the "fun" (or not) can start.

Circumvent ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 8:31 AM

Well I started DL Poser 7 at 6am at 800 KB/s when it got up to 70 percent and then the server stopped responding.  I had to start all over again cause my DL manager says the server doesn't support the resuming of DLs.  I don't get that.  But I'll manage some how.

Adrian

Circumvent ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 8:53 AM

OH man now I'm PO!!!!!!!!  It got up to 88 percent and the server didn't respond and my download manager just restarted the DL over again from 0 percent.  Does anyone know of a free DL manager that allows for resuming of broken DLs.  I'm about to E Mail EF a  very nasty letter!!!!!!!

Adrian

Tiny ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 9:03 AM

They had to turn off the resume download since that was one of the reason the server got bogged down. (According to thread at CP)

Circumvent ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 9:07 AM

Tiny
You got to be kidding. So what happens when the server stops responding and then it has to re-start the DL?  EF is a JOKE!!  Sorry to be such a pain in the butt, but this is really bad.

Tiny ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 9:53 AM

Circumvent, I know just how you feel. As the rest of us - take a deep breath and calm down a bit. 😉
I was very frustrated when the DL first broke with Firefox then (with 3 minutes left) with IE, then jumped back and forth resuming with GetRight. But when they settled the server handeling one download/one link my DL stayed steady with GetRight (approx 150-250Kb/sec) - one channel, no resume.
So get your armour shining, mount your horse and go at it again! You will succeed. 😄

kuroyume0161 ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 10:32 AM

Not much to be done here.  For the sake of it, I started to download the app last night.  The first attempt retrieved a whopping 8.7MB before quitting.  I restarted just before going to bed.  It did better, but no cigar (840MB).  Looks like I'll just start the download each night and it'll either be Xmas presents under the tree or a lump o' coal in the stocking until things settle. :)

Well, it is now 10 hours since I started my first download & I'm about to make my third attempt. I don't know how far I got this time as I've been asleep. When I woke up I thought "YES, it's done" but alas it seems the server was down again.
I am now more despondent than angry. This really is not on.

stormchaser ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 11:21 AM

They really could have split this damn file up, I'm now getting less than 50 KB/sec, I'll be here forever!
I really feel like making a complaint, but I know this would be a waste of time.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 11:33 AM

The bad thing is that they didn't split the file into smaler portions methinks.

I was in luck, when I came home from work, Poser 7 was waiting for me on my desktop, and I just downloaded the content package with no problems (and a speed at around 150Kb/s)

I'm on cable btw, 1½MBit (strange speed I know, the line is officially 1MBit, then 50% extra for "loyal Customers")

Oh and I used Firefox. Not Flashget or any other download managers. Perhaps I was just lucky, but that wouldn't be like me LOL

I'll tell you that if you were a Passport member (I'm not), you could complain in the forum and maybe get a response.

When V4 was released, a couple of us complained to DAZ in the forums about the 500 Internal Server Error while trying to download.  Instead of shrugging us off, they shut down the download servers and restarted them a little later with much better results for all.

My feeling is that a well-constructed download server setup (esp. for the volumes these guys deal with) should queue up requests and take as many as can be handled simultaneously and focus on finishing that set before starting others.  And it should never just stop an ongoing download just because 10,000 new requests were made - that is stupid.  Maybe it's time for businesses to consider a different strategy (like Adobe, iirc) where there are two stages - queue and download.  Keeping requests to download and actual downloads separate should terminate these types of problems (requests flood server causing downloads to falter and fail).

Thank you , stormchaser.

And to make the point, I still can't get it all downloaded.  Only got to about 34% before it was like "Download done!" - yay - well, except that it was missing about 1.2GB!  Arghhh...

It would be interesting to see what their final bandwidth bill ran compaired to how many gigs worth of P7 they actually sold.  With all these stalled downloads it sounds like they will waste a lot of money on bandwidth because people have to download the same bits multiple times.  If that's the case splitting the file up would have saved more than their user's minds.

Just got my e-mail and none of the links work just goes to an error page , guess e-frontier are taking lessons from e-on . Any one with the same problem got straight to Content Paradise and download from there . Slow download another 7 hours to go ! Should be done when I wake up for work tomorrow ( I hope ) . Let the fun begin .

Does anyone know how far along they are regarding preorder date?

Faery_Light ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 12:06 AM

I received my notice yesterday and started my download last night. Got 18% and it stopped. So I went to bed and restarted this morning when I got up. Took 12 hours for the biggest one and I'm on DSL. The other file will have to wait a bit so i can do other things before I go to bed tonight.

I'd have to agree that they should have allowed for all types of internet connections and arranged to have the files split enough for downloading. I did get mine(downloaded at 934kb/sec) though I do have high speed connection, but I can still remember the frustration at trying to download even a 2meg file on dial-up. So at a whopping 1.69GB(not including the other 200meg content file)it seems almost insane to have it set up like they do.

stormchaser ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 2:16 AM

Finally, finally, after countless hours of trying & torment I have Poser 7. I never want to go through that sh!te again!
Good luck for those still trying.

sandman_dreaming ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 3:03 AM

I know what you went through Storm! I downloaded P7 yesterday and it took over 8 hours.....thankfully the servers didn't go down, etc. but I downloaded the whole thing at 55.6 kb/sec and it was a bit tense not knowing if I'd have to start all over if the servers hiccuped! Kinda irritating...but at least I have it now and it all installed ok. More server bandwidth might have been useful!

stormchaser ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 3:10 AM

sandman_dreaming - That feeling when I lost my download at 80% was just terrible. I can laugh about it now though....not!

oliveramberg ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 3:28 AM

Downloading since yesterday. The mainfile crashes the last time after 1.3 Gigs. Arghhhhh..... New attempt on 50%. Will I ever work with Poser 7...?

stormchaser ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 3:32 AM

oliveramberg - hang in there mate!!

obm890 ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 3:58 AM

I got to 84% (1.4 GB) and then it stopped.     *#$%^&!!!

**Nice going EF/CP, really great! If they had stated on the purchase form that the download was a single 1.7GB file with no option of a restart I whould have opted for the box.

Now I have to wait intill next month to try again when my bandwidth cap resets. Maybe by then they'll have figured out a few things: like  allowing restarts is a good thing (that's the whole point of restarts, DUH!), and that breaking the file into smaller pieces means less bandwidth wasted if you're not smart enough to allow restarts. You'd think it was rocket science...

I agree with whoopy, I reckon on average people must have downloaded about 150% to get the 100% they needed. I hope EF/CP got burned bad.

stormchaser ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 4:42 AM

obm890 - So sorry to hear about that mate, this really sucks. EF will have to sort this out for future products.

Circumvent ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 5:10 AM

I finally was able to DL and I did need to calm down and everything is all better now.  The world is turning normally now for me.  Thanks Tiny for showing me the way :tt2:

Krazik has been working on the server issue from the begining. They had to make a choice between Shutting down the resume function, or No downloads at all.

I got my download completed in about an hour running Comcast Cable with no interruptions around 12am on 12/12.

Ariah ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 6:58 AM

Mine crashed at 85%. For the fifth time.

Why, or why does to server not support resume function?

Thank God I bought the extended download period as well... Jeez.

FeatherDrop ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 7:22 AM

Managed to download overnight but only after a couple of false attempts.

However, the merest look at the zip file indicates that the bulk of the file is the 1.7gb installer.  This begs the question....why?

kuroyume0161 ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 12:28 PM

Drat! Almost had it last night!  It looks to have gotten to 1.69GB before dropping this time.  That's 98%.  Another day, another lump o' coal... :cursing:😄

Anyone having major problems downloading the second Content file that comes with Poser 7? This is about 209Mb, but my download always seems to end prematurely at about 140Mb...when I try to check the zip file it obviously comes up as corrupt, etc. as it is incomplete. Having downloaded the main Poser 7 file yesterday I'm wondering why this much smaller file is causing such a problem!

kuroyume0161 ( ) posted Wed, 13 December 2006 at 2:56 PM

Actually, after several failed attempts at the App file, I downloaded the Content file.  Got it in two attempts - about 30 minutes for that one.  The App file is just too big to do while I'm on the computer - about 5-6 hours download.  Will continue to start at night and see the results in the morning.
