Subject: V4 vs Sydney Challenge

StealthWorks posted Sun, 17 December 2006 at 11:20 AM

There's so many threads comparing V4 to Sydney that I thought it may be fun to do a challenge based on that.

How's about posting your best Syndey or your best V4 character faces to see which one looks the most realistic and beautiful. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but hopefully the diveristy of faces will give the rest of us a clearer idea of which is the most versatile figure.

Note to make this fair there should be NO postwork but using textures and lighting is OK (after all thats were most of the skill comes in when using the raw Poser package). Also I think we should restrict to using only Sydney base and V4 plus the Morphs++ pack ( Lets face it V4 has no real face morphs out-of-the-box so we would be restricted to one face for her).

This hopefully will be a chance to stretch our creativity as well as giving those that are considering whether invest in another character the chance to see whats possible.

Maybe later we could do one to show off the body (although this will be harder as character realism  and shape will vary depending on the poses). But maybe just the face for now.

What do you think - any takers for the challenge?

TrekkieGrrrl posted Sun, 17 December 2006 at 11:38 AM

I like the idea.

So can we use the Face Room on Sydney?

Yes, the face room is fine since that is where Sydneys face morphs are (correct me if I'm wrong though since I don't have Poser 7).

Oh and lets not have loads of discussions on which is superior based on Mesh density and joint parameters etc. (since I don't understand all that anyway!).  The proof is in what can be achived so put your money where your mouth is and lets see whats possible with just the included (or in V4s case the add-on) morph pack

Have fun and lets see what you can do with those gals!

StealthWorks posted Sun, 17 December 2006 at 12:14 PM

OK I'll start the ball rolling with my V4 morph. (Maybe she's sad because she knows Sydney might give her a run for her money!)

Rendered in P6 with the standard light set-up and using the Wet Maps Texture pack available at DAZ3D.

Kalypso posted Sun, 17 December 2006 at 5:58 PM Site Admin

Ok I'll play :)

Here's Sydney morphed in the face room, where I also tweaked her texture and added a blush overlay.  Freckles painted in postwork.

Thanks to Trekkie I've got her eyes looking normal!

Oh, and click on the image to see original size, this board does a horrendous job of resizing and compressing shudder

That Sydney is amazing, save that this contest said no postwork. :) But even if I ignored the freckles I think it would beat almost every V4 I've seen so far.

Thanks arcady, oops, I didn't even see that we weren't allowed to postwork!  Oh well, it's just a few pixels :)

But ok, just to play fair, here's one of V4 with no postwork.

Btw, I've uploaded the three Sydney faces to freestuff, they should show up within 48 hours.

arcady posted Sun, 17 December 2006 at 9:18 PM

Are you using the morph brush - create? I find it too 'impactful'

I try to set it very low, but the slightest touch and the figure is growing horns out of the lips, cheeks, or wherever I try from. Hopefully someone will write a tutorial on it .

I find that setting the magnitude to .01 or .001 makes it easier to work with. Also, with some exceptions, "relative to: screen" gives better results than "relative to: surface".

Amazing work folks but I wonder whether the lack of Sydney entries is saying something about her capabilities compared to V4 hmm?  (then again maybe the P7 users are too busy exploring the new package)
Lucie - this is AMAZING. If I hadn't bought V4 before,  this would seriously make me consider it. BTW, if you ever do remember which character morph you used I'd love to know - this face is perfect for a render I have in mind.

Thanks everyone for posting - but please keep them coming :-)

I am really digging Syndey so far. I just got a chance to play with her tonight. This is her straight out of the box with her "ultimate" textures from the material room. I haven't given V4 a fair opportunity yet. I am sure they will both be very nice in their own way. It seems like DAZ characters get more vendor support than Poser characters. We'll see...

LaVonne posted Wed, 20 December 2006 at 9:24 PM

OK, I was playing with V4. She's got some other great qualities. I find her facial structure to be more well suited for younger women or fairies. Her pupils are WAY too big for my tatste and need adjustments.

I guess I like both of them, it would just depend on the nature of my render as to which one I would decide to use.

Sydney has a "kick-ass" look about her. V4 looks rather young & naive.

Just my opionion!

My only Vicky 4 is here.

I can't see how the V4 images have more in common with each other than the Sydney ones.  Certainly mine don't.  I can't see how you can get rid of the epicanthic fold on the eye from the face room, I've put some time into it and just ended up with variations on an eye with an epicanthic fold.  There don't seem to be any face morphs out there on the various vendor pages to help with that either.  I guess you could poke and prod around with the morph tool but that's a lot of vertices in a very small area, I didn't have much luck with that either ...

Quote - I can't see how the V4 images have more in common with each other than the Sydney ones.  Certainly mine don't.

Well they've all got similar facial structure and ethnic features, and eyes don't vary much in them either... And you know those white people, they all look the same anyway. :)

Going on the basis of the work in this thread.

The thread doesn't do Sydney justice either - as most of the Sydneys in here look to be unmorphed. Mine have some morphing, to make her look Asian rather than Caucasian. The others seem to be the default face or closer to than even my limited shifts.

Kalypso's first image of Sydney though - that pretty much still wins the thread for versatility in a model's face.

As for available morph packs for Sydney - I will semi-agree. I am very annoyed that none of the available packs have seen it as important to show many preview images of the potential face morphs. The best previewing is Netherwork's pack, and all it does is show six faces. I want to see something on the level of the kind of preview images Capces does for her Mil3 packs.
-That said, until you buy the packs, you can't fairly state what is in them, because the sellers are hiding the details from us. However due to that I have so far refused to buy them... My morphs so far have been in the face room and morph brush.

Just looking at these renders, I must say I really like how Sydney looks. "A Kick A**- Face" - like some one said earlier. She looks energetic, the sort of girl you can actually picture doing something physical. Like sports or being an action heroine. And yet she is very pretty too. Great face. Looks perfect for what I need for my comic. So I had to buy Poser 7 because of her mainly. Haven't actually downloaded the program yet.

V4 looks like a fairy to me. Or a fashion model. She is very pretty and all that but I can't picture her doing anything else except looking pretty and posing for the camera. Well in any case I don't have her so what do I know. Mind you, Im not saying this to diss V4, just that I personally don't need her right now. I'm sure she is a great piece of work.

Thanks for every one who posted pics in this thread. Those pics helped me to decide what to get. P7 or V4.

I just don't see how you can easily change Sydney's face very much to make her not-Sydney.  Make her skin a different color, add freckles, whatever, you still have that deep lacrimal cut and epicanthic fold and that special curve of cheekbone and chin.  With V4 it's trivial.  Default Sydney face is pretty, sure, but I would never use the default face for any real purpose.

pjz99 posted Sun, 24 December 2006 at 6:38 AM

DAZ high-rez is great (imo the best by a wide margin)
DAZ Nadia is great
DAZ Laura is great (although the tan is uneven, I don't know why)
PoserPros Jojo is very good, although her shader version mats looks a little greasy to me (fixable by tweaking the mats)
(I think on PoserPros) Zinnia is pretty good

Edit:  Oops, Grace is pretty indispensible for any black character you might want to create unless you just make your own skin; while you might be able to darken most of the skin down, the palms and soles of the feet will be wrong (typically they are much lighter than the rest of the body on a black person).

Most of the rest are really pretty indistinguishable from each other, just bland creamy featureless skin.  The brand new DAZ release Emma is not what I hoped for, it looks like smooth skin with heavy makeup on.  Oh well.

note: I own all of these skins and I'm not talking about looking at them from promo pics.

Just two different mindsets/aproaches Goldie.  With Sydney, you get a 'character' as a base, to start with.  With V4 (and other Victorias), you get a 'blank slate' to start with.

In the case of Sydney, if that character is appealing to you, then you're all set, but it might be difficult in some cases to get the 'Sydney' out of Sydney when you want something else.

In the case of V4 (along with the morph pack(s)), you start with something more 'generic', but is more easily moldable to something new (there are fewer 'defining characteristics' that you have to undo).

Both are equally vaild approaches and both have thier uses.

*"it might be difficult in some cases to get the 'Sydney' out of Sydney when you want something else.''

*You've just put your finger on the feeling I've been having since the beginning of this thread but that I couldn't explain to myself...  I think Sydney looks fantastic, I find she has personality, but she has traits (not sure this is the right word) that seem to be there on every render I've seen of her and makes her look not as versatile as V4 (she has a "personality" out of the box that is hard to get rid of to give her a new one with morphs maybe?), like the shape of her upper lip, the way it turned up a bit...  Is there any way to play with her so this isn't as pronounced?  Not that I don't like the shape of it, but I wonder if you can get rid of it to make her look a little more different?

I hope my post makes sense, not sure I'm explaining very well...

There are a few detailed areas that (without some specific morphs) will be difficult to get rid of.  As you mentione, the upper lip is one of those.  The overall shape of the eyes and the (huge) ledge on the lower eyelid and the shape of the lids in general are another.  A bit more subtle is the overall shape of the head/face, but that's easier to deal with in the face room than the others.

I hadn't bought any of the face morph packs available for Sydney yet, so I can't comment on how well they address those specific areas.  I've seen several claims of "She can be whatever you want her to be" (and similar), but... well, that kinda goes without saying - IF you had the necessary morphs in place, you could make her look like a giraf or an alien, so the question becomes what can you do with her out of the box and what morph packs are available for her (and what morphs are included in the morph packs).

Out of the box, she IS compatible with the Face Room, so that's a definate plus, but to address those 'traits' details mentioned above, you'll have to use some morphs not included out of the box.  To be fair, you can't exactly do a lot with V4 without morph packs either.

Sorry, been wanting to do this pose for awhile.
I apologize for crappy renders.
A couple of others:

Lacking "character, grit, life, etc. etc" is not the fault of the model. It's up to the user to bring them to life.

Well thanks all for contributing to this thread and showing off your excellent renders. At the end of the day my "personal" opinion based on what I've seen is that Sydney really isn't as realistic as V4. (Remember at the start of this thread I was looking for realism and versatility). Maybe its the lack of realistic textures or P7's lighting (or maybe its my definition of what realisc means!).
but from what I've seen V4 is far more capable These are the problems I see with Sydney
1/ not enough realistic textures
2/faces all look basically the same
3/Too many angular facets on her face giving her an almost in-game graphics quality

Maybe Sydney would be more versatile in the face room but I've yet to see any examples of that.

i think for now I'll stick to the Daz figure and judging by the number of negative threads on P7, I think I'll also stick with Poser 6.
Of course feel free to contradict and post me some killer Sydney images ;-)

Thanks again for taking the time to contribute to this thread and please keep it going. I'm going to unsubscribe from it now but will definately check back from time to time.

Excellent forum about V4 and Sydney. Well, I think V4 and Sydney are beautiful, but I prefer Simon. He is fantastic.

Sydney could be fixed to look quite different with Z-brush. I don't think the ultimate morphs really seem do much for her. I don't have them, so I'm just going by what I've seen.
I think they both have potential, as meshes go.

:) After playing with Syd for a couple of hours, I loaded Simon and turned him into a passable Rafer Johnson (black athlete/actor from the '60s) in less than five minutes. Very impressive.

On the one hand, V4 is pretty clearly the more malleable figure, as you can see here. On the other, Sydney, like Jessi, has a uniqueness that makes her seem very human. I'm happy to have both. But of course, I like Judy, Steph, and Jessi....

Kimber those are some really nice characters with a lot of "character" :)  I hadn't looked in on this thread for a while because the whole argument is getting pretty old - and I'm a noob, I'm sure for the people with experience it was farting dust from the first day.  Beautiful, classy stuff.

If E-frontier paid the attention to detail they did in constructing the head, feet, and hands, with the torso, they would have exceptional characters. The leg rigging is really much improved, but they could do better with the shoulders, and magnet joint controls. I still consider their characters to be first generation work. I imagine by generation three they will have, or should have things under control. I think the faces are their characters best features, with the possible exception of Jessi - although, I never thought she was that bad myself.

Thanks pjz99! I'm a noob too and yeah the arguement about who's better than whom is old.
I really enjoy spinning the facial morphs alot.

Your work is awesome!  When I finally get to the body morphs I hope they would look as good as yours like in the pic of the two you did!

Thought I'd add a couple of Sydney renders to the mix ...  custom morph on these.
