Subject: Poser to blender

Hi there,

I'm importing a model made in poser (or DAZ Studio) into blender. Works ok, the UV maps work fine but for one thing. Even though I have no problems for the hair transparency I do have one with the Eyelashes and pubic hair. Does any1 have any ideas about that?

What sort of problem are you having? Could you post a screen shot showing the way you've set up the textures for the problem areas?

Wizzie ( ) posted Tue, 19 December 2006 at 7:14 AM

Well I dont have the pic here, but basically for these two areas I bring in the transparency map in blender, set CALC ALPHA to yes and ZTRANS to yes, then in the map to set ALPHA to yes and in the map from select UV but I do not use a texture map, just set the color. The transparency doesnt work.For the hair I do the same thing but use a texture map as well as transmap and it works a dream

Hmmm... without seeing the screen it's hard to say for sure, but one thing try would be to set the Alpha value in the material to a value less than one. I've only ever used the Calc Alpha setting on PNG files that have transparency in them, so I'm not sure how they would work with an opaque transparency map image.

Hey, with Blender, most days I feel lucky if I remember how to add a cube to the scene. 😄

Hi, search www.elysiun.com, in forum python. There's a script which can do DAZ .mtl file correction. (By boxfish, I think). Also that thread mentions some differences between Poser and DAZ .obj output. I have adapted my .obj import accordingly and can use most Poser stuff without problems or manual corrections. Best regards, Michael

That's encouraging...  I've been thinking of trying blender since forever, but I always get scared away by how difficult it's said to be.  Just out of curiosity, how many menus, key presses and mouse motions does it take to add a cube in blender?

  1. First way - 3 mouse motions and 1 click:

        Menu: Add-->Mesh-->**Cube
    **
  2. Second way - Keybord shortcut, 2 mouse motions and 1 click:

        Shift+A: Mesh-->**Cube
    **
    And IMO, Blender isn't harder to learn than any other 3D program out there...
    First problem for a Beginner(tm) is the fact that Blender by default uses third mouse button for selection in 3d View ( that can be changed in user prefs ).
    Second problem is that standard keyboard shortcuts used in almost all other programs, like ctrl+c and ctrl+v, are having completely different meaning in Blender (that's hardcoded and still unchangeable, but I don't see any need for a changes in that area).
    And the last problem is that the Beginner(tm) usually expects to create a miracle in mather of minutes wihout any learning, and whan he/she sees that Blender can't do that for them, he/she deletes Blender folder and runs on some forum screaming "Blender sucks".
    But that problem isn't in domain of Blender coders :biggrin:

It's the reliance on the keyboard that put me off.  I used to use Caligari on the Amiga and wouldn't touch the keyboard for days, as once a file was named I could just click it to save and leave the keyboard on the floor (where I think it belongs when using a GUI based OS).  I like a gadget or slider for everything, when possible.  Good thing is that I wouldn't have to unlearn very much since the only key commands I have in memory are Wings'.

Thanks for the explanation of adding a cube.  This cube will render, right?  I remember reading the manual (it's been about 5 years) and thinking that I had to create an object before specifying the mesh as the mesh can't exist by itself and the object has no mesh until one is linked to it.  Or maybe I just wanted to think it was difficult...

As I've said, keyboard is a problem for a beginner. But when he get a gripp, It's a lot quicker than searching throgh menus for some command. I have'd also big toubles to get use to those shortcuts, but I have been determined and now I adore that workflow. My right arm is on my mouse, pointer is on my model and my left arm is on my keyboard. Example: If I need to extrude a face, I don't have to move a pointer to some menu to find Extrude tool. I press E, move pointer how faar I need and I click to finish. That's all. If I want to rotate something, I select that something (face, edge, object... whatever), press R and move pointer in what dirrection I want to rotate. Again, click finishes rotation. IMO That's faster than going to some menu and selecting Rotate tool, then after rotation is finished going again to some menu and selectiong Move or some other tool.
There's a lot of changes since you have readed that manual. There are still objects and meshes linked to it, but you don't have to deal with that if you don't want to. If you add a cube, you add a cube. Hit F12 to render, of course, if you have a camera pointed to that cube and some light that will shine in your scene you'll see that cube in the render :biggrin:

Thanks!  I think I'm really about to give it a try.  There are just so many powerful features in there and the price is nice, too!
