Recently purchased Xfrog and was wondering if anyone could help.

I can export plants as .obj files but how do I texture them. The plants look great textured in Xfog but is there a way to export the textures for Poser use, or will I need to re-texture them.
If so, what would be the best way to go.

The Xfrog forum has only 2 threads, neither of which help me with this.

The XFrog forum is very quiet, so you'll need to look in the archives for older threads.

A lot of Lightwave and 3dsMax, users make their trees in X-frog, so posting there might help too.

2 thoughts;

UVMapper Classic (to see if you like it. If you do, it's free. Pro is spendy, but does a lot more)

Wings 3d- has a built-in Uvmapper, and allows you to do some more modeling if you like.

Project Dogwaffle- a free image creation program. Supposed to be pretty good.

Project Gimp - a Photoshop clone, free and can also do stuff with texture.
http://www.gimp.org

should get you started.

Thanks guys.
Just had a thought.
I also have ZBrush, which I think can be used to paint on textures to objects.
Don't know if I will have the same problem with texture export though. I think ZBrush exports a
material file (.mtl) which I don't know what to do with.
I have tried using UV Mapper but the result is too complex for me to texture. A tree is far more complex than a piece of clothing. Thought there might be a way to get XFrog to export an image file texture map that could be applied in Poser. I will do some more reading.

Ashley, I use XFrog with Cinema4D quite often. Your plants should have a bark and leaf texture applied in XFrog. The bark texture is usually assigned to one or two materials depending on plant type and branching. The leaf texture and alpha map are assigned to the leaf material. The meshes are already UVmapped. Just manually reassign the texture maps to the materials in Poser. Be forewarned, XFrog meshes can get quite high in polygon count.

Looks like I'm almost there. Exported the plant .obj. and made the 2 material groups with the Grouping Tool. But when I applied the Xfrog textures this happened. Looks the same rendered. The leaf and bark (stem) textures are .png files. When opened in Photoshop, the edges are selected and I can copy and paste just the leaf/stem (separate from the background). Things like transparency maps come to mind, I have seen leaves on other poser plants with this type of set-up, but don't know the ins and outs of how they work.

Here's a close-up rendered view.

XFrog's website has a poser tutorial, but I can't remember exactly where.

You'll need to setup the transparency / alpha maps by hand.

Here is a tutorial on setting up in Xfrog, exporting, then bringing into Poser. You are right, you will need to create transparancy maps if the PNG has an alpha channel. This is explained also in the tutorial.

Just read that tutorial and it was good.
Have made the alpha maps which were quite easy - then I got side-tracked, always happens.
Will post a picture when I get back on task.
Thanks to you all.
