Thanks

It cannot be done! The Bryce procedural materials and the 3D max shaders are totally incompatible. It makes about as much sense as trying to mate a horse with a goat.

Well I can see the point of a gorse or a hoat...But it really is a bit much to expect overall standardisation across all 3D software. That there is as much standardisation as there is, should applauded especially as most software developers have so many different OS's to contend  with before any other considerations. ;)

It's been years since I touched 3D Max. I was reading last week in some of the other forums here how some people were exporting Bryce 6 materials to their heretical software by exporting objects from Bryce with the material applied, then importing that object to the other software.

danamo posted Wed, 10 January 2007 at 3:08 PM

True, Death_at_Midnight, but the exported object has the material sort of "baked-on" as an image texture, and not as a procedural .mat. You might as well do the old trick of rendering an image of the Bryce procedural on a plane, or 2D square from a topside view, and export that as a bitmap texture.

BUt Danamo I am sure there must be someway .Can it done something like this ?? we export the whole group as obj out of Bryce .Like this...Now as you know, there almost 6-7 exporting formats out here apart from obj.

amlan70 posted Wed, 10 January 2007 at 8:34 PM

You can see what I got when I am exporting. And then import in max .as likely while rendering it Max looks for the bmp s. But even if Inotify their paths I get no texture.BUt under intense direct target light .... I saw some texture on the rings !! any idea ...how to get it better withthe sameshine as Bryce ??

No, it cannot be done. And I don't care how sure you are. The shader languages of 3D Max and the material lab of Bryce are based on entirely different mathematical formulae. There is no format you can use that will successfully translate the exact look of a Bryce metallic, or other procedural material into 3DMax, or any other application for that matter. Better start learning how to use 3dMax's shader language if you are going to render your Bryce models there. I'm done.

I am very disappointed with Amlan. He has confessed to owning Heretical software. The Cardinals are not going to be pleased....................

Thanks Danamo I wd try to learn more .Bryster I dont understand what do you mean by it ...why are u so displeased ???

Amlan: Just joking.  3D Studio Max is an app from the 'Dark Side'. To use it is therefore Heresy! Happy New Year!

What I do in Wings (backsliding, but not outright heresy..;), is I'll open Bryce, create a cube (2d surface would probably work as well, but I'm lazy..;) texture it, and fiddle with lighting, etc., until I get what I want. Then I fill the whold screen with it, and Save Image As. (jpg usually, but if you have a lot of time and disk space, you could default to bmp..;).

Then go to your modeling program, and import the image as a texture (if Wings can do it,  I'm sure lightwave can..;)  that's about the only way. I've managed to do a coupla dozen mats this way, and so far, it's worked.

No offense Pakled, but I would never save an image out of Bryce as a .jpeg instead of a .bmp.
Maybe it's changed since the introduction of ver.6, but Bryce is notorious for having a really bad .jpeg compression scheme, full of pixelization, artifacts and such. Better to export as a .bmp and then take it into an image editor to compress to jpeg.

eh..I've used both. Worth a shot...I'll try it..;)
