Well, I just opened a P7 material file in Edit Pad & it is all gobbledegook, so I looked at a couple of other files - pose etc. Just the same.

So how do you edit a file now?

was it a compressed file? did it end with .mtz? if it was you can't read them with just any old text editor without uncompressing them first, there's a script in Poser for doing just that. Be careful though as it can uncompress everything leaving you badly short of HD space.

ps any of the files that has an extention that ends with z are compressed.

what file type are you looking at?

mc6 or mcz?

if it has a "z" in the extension then it is a compressed file and to edit it you just run the uncompress script from the python scripts menu. then edit the resulting file in a text editor.

Do I uncompress from within Poser or out? Can you uncompress a single file, or have to do all?

You simply need to open a compressed file with Winzip (assuming you are working on Windows, else use StuffIt). Inside it, you will get the uncompressed file.

You could use Winzip or Winrar (I'm not sure how it's done) but it's probably safer to use the script in Poser, you can uncompress a single file but it would have to be in a folder on it's own I think.

I always uncompress my Poser files, if you have a large HD, space isn't important!
In P7 it's Scripts/Utility/UncompressPoserFiles
I always tick "Uncompress Geometry Files" and "Delete original files after uncompressing"
It's personal choice if you want to do the last bit, but if you don't you'll have duplicates!

There is a handy tool "PoserCom.exe" that can be used to decompress single or multiple Poser files, folders, or groupes of folders. From the link above, go to Freebies > Samples.

Thanks, I found it.

I just made a temp directory, & copied the file into it, so I could uncompress & look at it.

Try appending .gz to the file name.

Or right click on the file and choose "Open with...."
