Hi!
I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate nd yesterday I bought an upgrade to Poser 7. Now I encounter a problem when trying to start the program - I get an error message saying "Poser.exe has stopped working" and then I can choose to either find a solution online (which doesn't work) or end the program.
Any body encountered this problem or any body know how to fix it?

Which is exactly why I'm waiting for a few months before I move to Vista.
Can you change the compatibility mode in Vista so that Poser runs under WinXP compatibility?

It doesn't matter which compability mode I choose, same thing happens any way ;(
Victoria_Lee posted Wed, 17 January 2007 at 11:32 AM
You might try doing a reinstall so that Poser is recognized by the new OS. I'd ask my son (he's the Guru in the house) but he's out at work right now.
Did you do a full install of Vista or just the upgrade?

Poser is on a loooooong list of programs that aren't compatible with Vista at the moment, if you can upgrade back to WinXP I'd do it, at least until a patch comes out for Poser.

Victoria_Lee: I did the full install of Vista.
Lucifer_The_Dark: Yeah, guess that's one option but I rather not do that at the moment....so strange with the compability settings and all it should work....the compability settings in WinXP works fine any way

Head over to the Vue forum, there's a thread going on over there about how Vista isn't going to let a lot of programmes run, something about security stuff or something, way over my head but you may understand it!!

I think the whole concept how Poser handles memoryblocks is what Vista doen't allow (yes, for "security reasons" aehem).
A patch wouldn't be enough to make Poser work (if memory management is the reason). Perhaps for a few month - until the first Vista servicepak comes out :)
If you are a programmer you can see something similar with XP while using the .NET framework. Grab something out of the clipboard and try to send it over the network. No chance to do it the way you did it before. It's only possible with a lot of code to circumvence the .NET bariere (if security where really the reason, it shouldn't be possible to find a way "out of the cage").
Windows users are going to live on an isolated island. Except they are willing to accept Digital Right Managment (DRM). Apple users are happier - anything works the way the user likes it.
Time to move Poser over to Linux, e-frontier :)
Lucifer_The_Dark posted Wed, 17 January 2007 at 1:46 PM
Can you honestly see the Poser programmers doing things the Microsoft way? They will have to include DRM into the very core of Poser so that it will work the way Vista expects it to work.
You remember the fiasco of the Poser 5 protection that had to be removed? this will be 100 times worse & they won't be able to remove it when it goes tits up.

Well im sory but upgrading to an operating system that wont allow lot's programs to work means hopefully compatability work's.
After all when that great spyware XP came out and people being able to send you messages and closing your programs down, Vista is going to be 10 times worse, already between the drug gangs, bin laden and organised crime around the world.
The best hackers are ready and waiting to hack to hell to try and find the spyware code built into vista, and the patches ya gona need be hilarious, you must remember after the yank goverment tried force mcafee and norton to leave a back door open for CIA and Nsa.
People went mad when they found out and a friend still has 1 of the p3 chips that intel had left code in that allowed govt agencies to acces your comp, i was lucky i had a later p3.

I aint touching vista as a russian hacker said when the crap hit's the fan vista will be a nigtmare to use, after all how do you think a lot of certain stuff not named got onto peoples comp.
So enjoy vista till the patches come out as i managed to see a writeup and some code of the changes to vista, so much changed to no way hosay, let that bloody meglomaniac bill gates, and bonzo bush have thier fun ill stick with XP.

I have been testing Vista at work, and if you can, really you should try to reinstall XP for now. Vista has numerous driver updates that need to be released and numerous issues now as it stands.

I'm currently doing an IT course and parts of the course require me to do clean full installs of the OS together with hardware/software installs/upgrades, for the purpose of wrting and reporting for business documentation and creating training manuals etc.
I for one wont be bothering with Vista for some time to come for that reason alone and the headache the licencing causes when doing major hardware changes and upgrades :-/

I'm on Windows XP 64-bit and I see absolutely nothing that Vista offers that I care about that XP64 does not also have. I have no plans to change OS for at least a year.

I have Windows Vista.
Maxwell (that 4GB RAM using freak) runs, Poser does even better.
It's not stellar though- I'm using SreeD + 2005 nVidia XP drivers, and I minimize Poser while waiting for the program to snap back into consciousness...

No surprise. DAZ crammed so much stuff into her cr2 to make her newbie and merchant "friendly" that she hardly can walk under her own weight.

And of course it has absolutely nothing to do with texture size.
Sidneys default textures are 3541x4000 and 4000x3500, while V4's are 512x512, 512x512 and 512x512.
And the difference in performance is easily noticeable even then.
While texture size IS important, mesh resolution and morphs are a lot more important.
(And Sidney even has a higher resolution mesh than V4)

Well, that's MS for ya. They had security holes you could drive a truck through with XP, so they tried closing them all in Vista (Vista Ultimate is the highest category of the 5 fingers of Micro...er, most feature-laden version of Vista..;).
I suspect, that for a nominal fee to EA, Microsoft would give them the code necessary to be compatible. I don't know if anyone remembers this, but there was supposedly a version of Poser that would access the web (Zone Alarm people noticed this a few years back) to check for copies of itself (same serial number, or somesuch?) and shut down Poser if one was found. If that code is still in Poser, that might be part of the problem.
Cain't win for losin'..;) I'm still on Win 2k, and honestly, no problems to worry about . Maybe 1 or 2 service packs down the road, I'll think about Vista, but until then..;)

V4 works fine on my current hardware, worked fine on my last-generation (Pentium 4) hardware as well. Might consider hardware upgrade.

Since V4 has fewer verts and fewer morphs than V3 with all morphs loaded (as I often work), that means what? As you seem to imply, if you're not a newbie, then you can certainly delete the morphs you don't want to use, can't you?
Darboshanski posted Thu, 18 January 2007 at 6:50 AM
I'm not touching Vista nope, not me. I'm staying with XP as long as possible before MS stops updates and supporting it which you all know will happen sooner than later because MS will want everyone on the Vista ship. Let's just hope down the line that MS has enough life boats for this ship when it hits an iceberg.

Wow. The rudeness of some newbies here never ceases to amaze me..
Yeah right, instead of trying to get optimum performance FIRST, just throw more hardware on it. Gee, why didn't I think of it ?
"...then you can certainly delete the morphs you don't want to use, can't you?"
Morphs, what morphs ? V4 hardly has any because that's the only way DAZ could get rid of the injection system.
Unfortunately there are lot more things wrong with her cr2 than just morphs, but this might get a bit too technical for you.
:glare:
I could rip everything out that slows her down, but then there wouldn't be much left of her anyway, so I rather base my work on better meshes. Why should I do DAZ' work ?
Guess everybody get's the mesh that he deserves.

pjz99 was thinking of getting xp 64...so everything is working fine for you? Main things I'm worried about are poser maya and zbrush.
pjz99 posted Thu, 18 January 2007 at 9:37 AM
Everything works perfectly of the tools I use, but I don't have Maya or Zbrush. It's pretty highly dependent on whether you get good, working drivers - if you're okay on that front, you really ought not to have much trouble from any non-hardware-specific software. Maya you can be pretty confident will work well on XP64 considering Autodesk is pushing the 64-bit verson.
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=7639522
The 64-bit version of Autodesk Maya 8.5 software is supported on any of these 64-bit operating systems.
edit: I would go so far as to say that XP64 is the stablest operating system I've ever owned. Smoothest setup I've ever had (and I've personally owned maybe a dozen PCs, and worked on many hundreds).

My next PC will have XP64 on it, NOT Vista! Good god. I worked as an alpha tester on 'Longhorn' which sounds like the direct linear ancestor of Vista. I compared notes with a girl I knew, who was a beta-tester on Vista, and does occasional consulting with some of the security agencies.
She didn't like Vista. It has major faults because they rushed it to market without complete testing. Up until the last deadline, MS kept adding things to Vista, and not all of them were tested for something that is a KILLER--cross-compatibility.
Titanic is the wrong analogy, I think. This ship is so big, it can run into itself! The end result is the same, however.

I'm too poor for a MAC and too stupid for Linux, so I will clinge to XP2 until some kind soul rips out all of that DRM crap out of Vista so I can be sure my machine does what "I" want, and not what Unca Bill and the content mafia thinks it should.
