Subject: Pop-Up while browsing asking for user name and password

Today I was presented with a very large and prominent pop-up while browsing the freebies. It asks you to put in your user name and password. It had a .uk extension. How it got past all my security and firewalls I don't know. Just be aware that this is happening. I closed it too fast and didn't get the full web address.

Another problem are a large amount of dead links. Really dead links with "site not found".
The search engine is another problem. It still does not work. When I search for V4 I do not want to see V3,V2,Vicky or Posette. Indexing is really not that difficult!

Regards
Helga

It's most likely that the site that the freebie is hosted at is either offline (due to bandwidth exceeded) or being updated when you tried to download.

Nothing to worry about, it just something that happens (some hosters just don't have a graceful failure landing page).

To look for V4 items please go to Poser>Victoria 4 and then to what you're looking for. the search engine does not use strings less than 3 characters. "V4" is only 2 characters so will not produce a meaningful search.  This should not be needful now that we have proper categories.

If you are getting dead links please notify a moderator for that section of freestuff so we can communicate with the relevant user.

Thanks :-)

Hi nruddock,
See I am still worried because I was just browsing and made no attempt to download anything at all. Just went from page to page and looked at the thumbnails. So this could not have come from a specific server I tried to access. Is this what they call fishing? I don't know. Never happened before.

Helga

Hi Karen,
I also did a search using "Victoria 4" not just V4. It made no difference. Only with Victoria 4 I got more hits on everything that has Victoria in it, 3,2, and Posette.

I have tried before to report dead links. Renderosity's answer was always "Try later" or "Try at another time and it may work". So I have given up on reporting dead links because it is my belief that nothing will be done about it. Why should I bother?
Regards,
Helga

As the thumbnails are hosted offsite, so the prompt would have popped up when trying to get one of the thumbnails on the page you were looking at (for the same reasons mentioned earlier).

I know this is an old thread but, I get that too asking for a password while browsing the Poser Free Stuff. Just recently.

Is there a specific Poser Freestuff item that this happens on?

It's weird, just like the orginal poster, it's a UK address popup, it's happening to me a lot I even did a AV scan and spyware scan & comeup clean. Seems to happen if I just browse, not really download, the free props section. It appears to be random. I'll see if I can screen capture it next time around.

Thanks for the screeny. This has been haunting me for a while. ;)
Whatever you do don't click on it!

What happens if you do?

I'm not sure. I didn't want to take a chance since, it really shouldn't be popping up here, I wouldn't recommend clicking on the link to the popup. It could just be a java script but then you don't know if it's harmful or not. Just said that, as a precaution to anyone who's thinking about clicking on it.

When I went there to get the screenshot, I clicked it and nothing happened except the popup finally went away after a couple of tries. ;)

Oh, ok. ;)

I wasn't gonna attempt clicking on it for any reason.

I'm not that bold or daring. LOL.

I've been browser hijacked too many times in the past to trust a popup.
