I'm wondering if some of you might know a bit about zip programs. I need to change from the one I've got so when I upload my freebies or retail stuff people can open them. I have the evaluation copy of Winzip V. 11 and it's causing problems. So off to their site I went and found what is wrong. It isn't always compatible with other zip programs. So if you download a Winzip file and use something else you get the corrupt message. I found three files, Freezip, Powerarchiver and one other, gotta find where it went, I lost it. Anyhow...does anyone use any of these or what do you use? I need one that's compatible with other software. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I use WinZip v9 and v10. Both will open your files just fine.

hi; guess I need to find my old V.9 or v.10 and install it. V.11 is not compatible with other zip software. If not for poor eyesight, I'd have read the fineprint...sigh. Thanks for reply.

WinRar is free and works just fine with zip files...

There's also Stuffit (Mac or PC). The file expander is free. Does zip, tar, rar etc.

Isn't the free Winrar a "trial" version?

EDIT: there's also the opensource 7-Zip

Ah right :)

I needed to unrar something recently and didn't bother with Winrar because of that "trial" thing, and got Stuffit expander instead.

I only use WinRar, it is easy to use, friendly interface, you can open zip, rar, ace, gz, tar, iso and Poser's (pzz,crz,ppz,....)!!!! You also can look/open what is inside zips.
And if you want to compress something you can do it into multiple volumes (.rar.part1, .rar.part2, part3.....), excellent for backups that don't fit in only one CD.
And I hate Winzip!!!!

Yes, I have that too but it doesn't let you pack in zip format. which is what I need for my products here. And the latest Winzip wasn't made compatible with most other zip programs. That has caused a lot of confusion. so I'm going back to the older Winzip I still have a copy of. And This other,Powerarchiver, is a good one but after a period I'll have to buy at &20.oo but it looks worth it. Thanks for all the replies.

**This is the one I use all the time. Never gives me any problems and it's totally free. Plus it has the added advantage of remembering the last file you unzipped something to. Also, very easy to zip things in. Just right-click on whatever you want to zip and tell it to. Then let it do it's thing and you have it. **

But I always pack in zip format!, rar compress a little more but is much slower than zip.
You only need to select in which format you want to compress, check the zip option.

Corel now owns WinZip.  Is it any wonder it's suddenly become a POS?

kawecki, You can pack in zip format with winrar? Well, then I don't need anything else. :) Thank you all for your replies.

You can choose the compression options too and many more things that almost never use.
