are you using depth mapped shadows by any chance ? I've seen similar on my renders when I'm using 'em. I tend to increase the shadow blur radius which gets rid of them (Or you could use raytraced shadows but they have their own nasties attached)

Hi Frank, I tried changing that (went to ambient occlusions & set everything to zero), but it still showed up...

I normally have the shadow blur radius set to 9. Give that a go (I rarely use AO - not figured it out yet :) )

I've sometimes seen lines like this when a light is coming from just
slightly behind the surface. (Off to the side, and a bit beyond 90 degrees
from center.)
It's especially obvious on a plain wall, where there's no question of
leftover morphs or complicated mesh.
