is it possible to use vue for making games? an interactive world you can traverse?

agiel posted Tue, 13 March 2007 at 2:46 PM

No... Vue doesn't have the tools to generate interactive 3d games.

For that, you should give Blender a look. I tried a recent version not long ago and I have been surprised by how much it has matured since the last time I checked.

Once you get past the interface (and there is a very nice tutorial to get you started), you should be able to give a try to the game development side of it.

what is blender? compared to vue?

agiel posted Tue, 13 March 2007 at 11:23 PM

Attached Link: http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/features/

It's an open source alternative to Maya, 3Dmax and other all-in-one modelers, renderers, animation suites of tools.

Check out the features page for more details.

Don't let the interface discourage you - it is quite simple once you get the tutorial down. After that, it is well worth a try.

Or you could be patient and use Crysis level editor :)

(see NightVoice's link in the attached thread).

in terms of making games, vue is great for a myst style game. Ive made a few my self.

haegerst posted Thu, 15 March 2007 at 10:15 AM

Yeah, i also wanted to pledge for "myst type" games.

Besides that i dont see why Vue should be "worse" for game development then other tools. Since Vue 5 you can export scenes and objects. Most Game 3D engines can import .3ds files, so 3D Max could be between Vue and the game. I have never exported much or did any 3D games, but I dont think Vue is better or worse then other applications, only thing to mention would be that vue lacks a modeler (nurbs or polygon), afaik you mainly export objects into your 3D game engine and usually do the rest with the native editor for the engine. But I'm really no pro regarding games, best i ever programmed was a black jack in VB.

The original question was oriented towards games with interactive world you can visit... editors for this kind of games include easy bridges to a 3D 'live' rendering engine, tools to simplify geometry and paint on model, some rule system to script actions and follow physics model, etc...

Look at the Game Development features of Blender and you will see how well Vue measures to it.

That being said, it is true Vue  is great  to render scenes and backdrops for games similar to Myst or The Longest Journey.

jc posted Thu, 15 March 2007 at 5:13 PM

Vue can export objects, but they won't necessarily look as god as they do in a Vue render. That's because a lot of the great looking stuff in Vue depends on procedurals - which can't be exported, as there are no standards for procedurals.

Like Agiel said, you can render Vue images to make great backdrops and such - probably HDRI environments too.

shadeus posted Fri, 16 March 2007 at 12:08 AM

hmm that 3d interactive part probably mislead it. pretty much just making games. interactive part was me thinking about the ecosystems.

if i wanted vue rendering i would have to use 3dsmax plugin?(which keeps crashing on me.. :(

jc posted Fri, 16 March 2007 at 12:59 AM

Sorry - not sure what you're saying above.
I just meant render 2D images in Vue and use in whatever app you build your games in.

agiel posted Fri, 16 March 2007 at 1:00 AM

Why would you need the 3dsmax plugin ?

What I meant is just renderi scenes and use them as backdrop in a game.

agiel posted Fri, 16 March 2007 at 1:08 AM

hehe... that was good timing jc.

I won't be there for the reply though... off to bed :)
