You could try an oceanographic institute somewhere maybe? I'd also try this address, as he might be able to point you in the right direction:- http://planetpixelemporium.com/earth.html
As for the website going AWOL, it happens more times than you'd think. If a company or person stops using and closes their website, if it has cool name web companies will buy the domain name (or just acquire the unused page name, I think...;)

Start here, NASA's Blue Marble. Large resolution maps for download. Sniff around everywhere.

WOW!!!! Some of those images are 1.34 GB!!!! Now thats what I call a texture :) I wonder how bryce would render one of those :)

Just download a lower res image, they usually offer smaller sizes, but they still render out well:-)

I knew I could count on you guys. I think those will work nicely for what I hope to work on. I will post something here pretty soon. I try a couple of test renders and add some coloration to some of the maps.

That Blue Marble site is fantastic - I have plans for these! Does anybody know where I can get similar resolution clouds from though? putting 2048x1024 clouds over Blue Marble images looks rubbish

hrm - anyone know a way of converting .dds to .jpg, or willing to do it for me? My GIMP plug-in is having none of it :cursing:
Rayraz posted Thu, 05 April 2007 at 7:52 PM
thre's a 4K png in there, that should suffice. If it doesnt come with transparancy greyscaling it and editing levels should suffice to make a transmap outta it i think...
