OK, I know I'm totally clueless. I'm a newbee so of course I am. But this seems prettyI'm trying to export an object from bryce 5.5 All I did was make a sphere and tried to export it but I can't.
I used the buttons at the top to create a sphere and then selected it but when I got to File menu>Export Object the export object is unavailable. What am I doing wrong?

Sorry, it was not until Bryce 6.0 that primitives could be exported out.
And, then it is primitives that have been given (positive, negative or intersect) attributes and booleaned together.

The primitives are not meshes, so can't be exported. In B6 they can be used to make Boolean meshes, and they can be exported. New feature.

I'm not trying to cause controversy here, but if all you want to do is export a sphere model you can do so from Wings3D. I think it is great that Bryce6 will now export booleaned primitives, but if all you need is a primitive, Wings has quite a few types available, and it will export them in several different file formats like .3ds, .obj, FBX etc. Wings is also free so it makes a good accessory to Bryce.

Yup, I agree that would be your best way, Wings3D.

What you can do is put a sphere in and make it positive. Then put a different shape (cube sounds like an idea to me) inside it small enough that it doesn't push through the edges. Group it and I think you should be able to convert and then export it.

Of course having pointed that out I noticed you said you were using 5.5 and not 6 so it might not work but you could always give it a try.

For me, I don't like very much the Wings interface. It also doesn't like my graphics card or something. Fortunately there's all sorts of other programs out there that can export a primative.

Yeah, I was intrigued by the vague mentions of Manchester United and Bonnie Langford, but would have liked to see all the words.

The scroll says (or at least I think it says!) :
The Grand Bryce Inquisition
His Eminence, Cardinal The Bryster and his Eminence
Cardinal Fang have included the following names of heretics
against the Holy Church of Bryce. They are to be held in
Shaftoe Castle and strapped into comfy chairs and tortured
with satin throw pillows. They are also to be made to drink
countless cups of Earl Grey tea with scones, and forced to
watch an endless loop recording of Wales playing
Manchester United, or forced to listen to recordings of
Bonnie Langford singing Show tunes.
Wales v the Mancs, interesting, I wonder who Ryan Giggs would play for?
Also, Bonnie Langford, surely that's a bit harsh even for Heretics!! :)
