I have a photo I took, that the model then wanted to be in sepia....now, she would like just the chain of a necklace to be red

what is the best way to color this?  I tried a duplicate layer, then using the magic marque tool, to select it, then painting it, but im not so sure it looked good, nor do I know if this is the best way...

please advise
