Here's something nice. Someone styled his apartment like something you see in Star Trek.

I wonder what Paramount thinks of this. :) I collect Full Size Video Arcades from the 80's it would be cool to setup a theme like that in the basement, and have arcade games all around to try out :)

yup..that's it. Been on the market for 2-3 years, as memory serves. It's in England somewhere. It's been in one of the Trekkie movies as well.

That is awesome, thanks for the link! But as poor as I am, I'd have to settle for spray-painted newspaper, glued to the wall, with crayon drawings of the panels. sigh

Here's some more LCARS.
http://www.lcars.org.uk/lcarstemplate.htm?Page=lcars.htm
I was just looking at LCARS sites and started wondering how practical do you think the GUI is. I have a few old laptops and been playing with the thought of making like a clock or something to hang on the wall. Then I found these web sites and I'm wondering.....
Analog-X64 posted Sun, 22 April 2007 at 8:06 PM
Same here I've got some Old Pentium III laptops not sure what to do. They are too slow to render with. If you find a good use let me know.
Death_at_Midnight posted Sun, 22 April 2007 at 10:54 PM
There are some interesting uses to do with old laptops. I've written a calendar program for the desktop that has some useful features... one of which enables me to download my renders from my site to display as desktop wallpaper. It's something I would like to offer to everyone here one day when it gets a bit better. Here's a screen capture of it, though.
But now I'm getting into an LCARS's mood. Want to do something with it. :-) Maybe time to do a Star Trek render?

I have a good use for one of them! My wife is doing the Pampered Chef thing. They have their own software that does all the calculations and submits the paperwork electronically. She asked if they had a Mac version and they said, No. So she has to do everything manually on paper. For some reason or another, she has had the last three out of four shows held up do to "errors" with her paperwork. Now I've seen her work on these things for hours and hours and she's very meticulous, often pouring over the forms three or four times to make sure eveything is right. The last time Pampered Chef called about a mistake, she was in tears with fustration. I told her if there was a way, I'd find an old PC laptop if there was one to be found. Now this is the hard part for me. We are the definition of the "working poor". Combined, we make less than 30k a year and on top of that, good ol' Uncle Sam decided we owed him $664. We just don't have that kind of money. I had to get a loan to pay the taxes. So, I cannot pay for an old PC laptop. We just don't have it. I could pay for shipping (searches inside of pocket, seperates change from lint). If any one here is moved to help us, I'd appreciate it very much. thanks Elfwine longbow@montana.com

Mebbe I'm getting old and grumpy but I all could think was 'He must be a big hit with the girls.......'. I just have this vision of him finally getting a girl back to his place and them turning and running, and running, and running, and changing their telephone numbers..........

There's some good Lcars sites out there..
http://www.bennisoft.com/
http://welcome.to/datasdomain
http://freespace.virgin.net/p.dobson/lcars/
http://www.lcarscom.net/databank.htm
http://www.lcars-terminal.net/
There's also a place http://www.meWHO.com (I think), also search for 'System 47'. That does a screensaver of LCARS. Hope this helps

Thanks Pakled. There's also the LCARS 24 project. Find it at http://sourceforge.net/projects/lcars24/
From their page:
Starfleet GUI, full-screen alarm clock & calendar, games, utilities, sims, maps, graphical ref library, file manager, viewers, players, animation. Requires a HighColor/TrueColor DOS-based laptop with std. graphics card & Sound Blaster.

True true, not in this century. Yet the project is geared for the older, 1998 era laptops. The thing works pretty well for my oldest 1993 laptop which was designed for Windows 3.1. It's got Win95 on it still, first release, and still works great with 8 megs ram. It ran Linux too (Debian)... but can't run Bryce.
I think there's a freebie DOS called "FreeDOS" which I hear is fairly compatible.
If you're into Linux, there's a few LCARS skins I've seen, but not sure for which desktop manager. This was some years ago, but from that I remembered it looked extremely good. It may have been for WindowMaker, but not sure, or Enlightenment.
I did make an LCARS skin for Windows back in 1997 for WindowBlinds. It's still available at their web site http://www.wincustomize.com/ Just look for LCARS and if the author is Death, then that's one of the two I did. It was here when I decided that LCARS might look cool on a sci-fi show, but not practical for a windowed environment. It seems to me LCARS is best as a full screen single task GUI. If one must do multi-tasking with it, then just have several full screen windows.

If you want to see the 'ultimate' (I'm not a Trekkie...honest..;) geeked- out LCARS display, I did one on the oldest page of my gallery, of all the 'Trek' elements found in all the shows up to Enterprise..;) it's a sickness...but mostly harmless...;)

That is very cool! I like that table of elements.
Death_at_Midnight posted Fri, 27 April 2007 at 5:54 PM
Well, I guess you know where this is going.... I took a break today at work and made an LCARS template GUI for Microsoft's .NET platform. Here is a screen shot or two. It's basic because first it's one hour worth of effort (had to make the little shapes and code it) and is just one window. But I hope to eventually make a little program where I can fill in the two halfs with content. It's a true Windows app, and can resize everything without having to redraw stuff.
Death_at_Midnight posted Fri, 27 April 2007 at 5:58 PM
Hrm, almost everyone writes their own mp3 player... maybe I should put one into this and play it in the car! LCARS in the car. hrmmmm Now i'm dreaming. :-)
Btw, I'm following the blue displays in Star Trek Nemesis for reference.
pakled posted Sat, 28 April 2007 at 12:21 PM
quick study. Among the web sites I posted was a reference to the 'shape of doom', getting that curvature to work correctly without artifacts, gaps, etc..;)
The original LCARS were done on Macs (well, this is Hollywood) in a Macromedia product (can't remember the actual name). I did get a small sense of gratification watching an episode of Voyager recently, when they really zoomed in on the LCARS, and I saw...stairstepping..;)
This is great work, hope it comes out all right. I've never designed an MP3 player (I presume you mean skin?..;), but there's always tomorrow.

No no, I actually mean coding up the player. I've never been good for skins, only did them LCARS ones. But the first real attempt I tried was coding up my own player. Here's a screen capture. It's at the upper right of the screen. The window that is open is it's playlist. The player is small, minimalistic.
