yeah i followed this tutorial for making/using bones http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro/Bones, but some bones dont get all the poly's i need, and some get too much, does anyone know if you can make them kind of grasp farther/shorter distances or something? an answer would very appreciated, thanks, zkenshin ^^

You're in luck.. I'm just finishing up a tutorial on using weight painting to rig your meshes to your armatures..
I should be done in about 30 minutes or so..

Reddog's tutorial method is the better way to go about it but you can also use envelopes:
