How do we know where and what the photo is of.  I scibble done notes telling me which set of images are for where.  Here are the notes I did for my holiday in North Yorkshire.  Lets see how others do it, just for some light entertainment.

I just remember....don't know really. You could introduce me to someone, 5 minutes later I can't remember their name. Show me a photo from 3 years ago, and I can say we were on the road between Bunbury and Margeret river without hesitating.

I use a workflow when storing my raw files via Lightroom and make folders with place names and dates. But  I always know where the images were taken

This was over 200 photo's taken over a nine day period.  With no access to a computer.

I just remember - I took 1804 shots over the two weeks I was in Tenerife and know where and when every single one of them was taken. When I store them on my computer, I just upload them into a folder of that date and then sub-folder into months/years. Every now and then, as with the Tenerife ones, I just name the folder accordingly to make it easier for me to access.

Sure well there is no substitute for keeping good records via Pen and Paper I think some may also benefit from making a note of species and place names that are a little off the beaten track that sort of thing.. But in the digital era taking such notes like camera settings is less important than with film.. Then I take copious notes lol

I rarely take more than a dozen shots on an outing so I have no trouble remembring when and where ;)

I only take mental notes when out with the camera. I use Picasa to organise my pics on the computer and when I put pics into albums I keyword them with the location and one or two words to describe the image, eg. Selby, sunset.

I take mental notes, but they often get erased. Maybe I'm not out and about enough, but usually just remember. Aren't there some cameras with a GPS feature for the exif data?

Yes Navman does one.  You take a photo with it, them it will take you back to the place.  So cool!

Photos? what? oh-ya those things. I have the same memory as Jedink has. I take and mark them (photos) when I get home... if i ever get to it. You could use certain cards for deferent places and note down which card shot where. @Kort. Yes some cams have GPS built in. Nikon makes some (and hopefully Canon will too).

When I was walking along Hadrian's wall I saw a guy in the distance who was setting up three tripods and then taking photographs of the wall from each before moving on.  I watched him for a while and wondered. We got closer and eventually our paths crossed. I could see he had some other devices there I had not seen before and assumed they were storage of some sort.
I had to ask what he was doing.

Well it turns out his job was to walk the length of Hadrians wall and take photographs from all angles with satellite reference points. He was working for a company producing a digital 3D map. 

"Wow what a fantastic job"  I said.  
"It's OK I suppose but I've gotta walk along this  ***** wall"

We chatted for a while and it appears the company he works for does the same for significant landmarks all over Europe .  I asked if they had any jobs

When there is a notice or something at a place of interest I take a shot of the notice - saves writing.
When loading onto the computer I just name the folder of where the place was.

Seems it may be possible to use GPS with any camera this story looks interesting any  creative experimental types here lol!!

I rely on memory and generally for photo's it's not to bad, for exmple the B&W photo I posted a couple fo weeks saying that it was an old one was taken thursday 24th May '93, on the river Lora, Norway about 2pm in the afternoon....

I know they often say that people who do memory tricks use pictures to help them visualise but with my photo's it really does tend to work - when it stops I guess I'm going to need a notebook!
