Download now hosted on Download.com, needs a serial number to run now (free registration and stuff), doesn't crash on P7 lights anymore and has got a complete interface overhaul - you're gonna hate it :Dmaclean posted Fri, 27 July 2007 at 7:43 PM
Yep, it's cool. Now with styles (aka skins), and activity tabs (aka 'rooms' in poser), but way more flexible. You can create your own activity tabs, rename them, and save your own styles and layouts.
Plus it's even faster now and uses less memory.

Personally, the new default interface looks like it was designed by Fisher-Price, and it has that fish-eyed woman staring at you! :scared: And it overwites all your preferences so you have to spend an hour or so putting the program back to the way you like it. Which is a retarded in a program with such a customisable UI :cursing: They could at least warn you or offer a choice of default or classic UI in the installer but noooo DAZ knows best.
RHaseltine posted Sat, 28 July 2007 at 10:08 AM
You should have a choice of Classic, Nouveau in trwo flavours and hexagon and Carrara for style - as well as several choices for layout, putting different tabs with diffrent tool-sets in.

Downloaded, installed, rendering away :D
Andrew_C posted Sun, 29 July 2007 at 10:44 AM
I already have got it set up the way I like it. What I found annoying is that there is no mention on the website or in the installer that the program has a new UI which disgards your old preferences. And like I said, I think the new UI is amazingly customisable and has great potentential. If the website mentioned the new UI properly, which it should since it is the "Wow" feature of 1.7, and by that I don't mean the thread in the forum, I wouldn't have been surprised. The present page make the new UI sound like a couple of features tacked on to the old UI, not a complete redesign.

I am pretty happy with it so far. Got my pwsurface, morphloader and all my other plugins installed and working It does render a little faster and I like the new posing plugin they included. Loads older scenes for me with no probs.
The tabs are ok. I did go in and set all my views to single for each tab and it transisitions between them much faster now, as it was dragging a little for me. I have my interface set to classic and replaced said googley eyed female with dragon, lol.
All in all I think it's a good thing. I had problems with 1.5 so ditching it for an upgrade was no prob for me.
Now, if they will just change their website colors from the eye burning gray haze to something more high contrast I will be a happy camper, lol. :)

click on the lifeless glass eyed "V" CG tramp and change her to trees or the cool hexagon logo
now if i can only hack the splash screen to kill her off from my DS experience completly

Will I have to reinstall everything? Custom faces, poses, and the like?
RHaseltine posted Mon, 30 July 2007 at 2:18 PM
No, your content (poses and so on) and saved scenes should work fine - it's just the code-based stuff (plugins and, because of the new 3Delight version, shaders) that need updating. Most scripts are OK, but a few need updating.

I always find it rather funny when people complain about DS. I grant you that if you paid for
a plugin that no long works, you have reason to complain, though most are updated now.
The program itself, however, is approaching Poser in capability, and it's FREE. It doesn't
cost a red cent! Why all the whining? I can see it about Poser though.. It cost me quite a bit.

There are a lot of people that feel you can't be both a Poser and D|S user. It's either one or the other for them. I use whichever one can import the content I've collected.
I prefer to use Poser 6 because I can import that stuff into Carrara Pro 5.1. And I've used Poser and Carrara since the Fractal Design days. D|S I never really played with other than converting OBJ files for use with Bryce 5. And I just uninstalled Bryce 5 last night since I haven't used it in over 3 years for anything. So I may get rid of D|S also. I don't need it or the new version 1.7 either. I'm not a V4 fan. I'm not upgrading to Poser 7. And I'll one day eventually uninstall Poser 6 after not using it for awhile.
D|S and Poser are fine for just importing content and hitting the render button. I prefer to model my own stuff and render it in something better like Carrara or Vue.
Then there's modo and Zbrush which I'm learning when I have time. One can't easily go back to Bryce after using those.

It seems very cool to me. How much longer will it stay free, I wonder?
I have since discovered that we can have "Bryce Studio" running and that opens up worlds of possibilities. So little time and so many free apps.
Who is the new Daz Maz(cot) anyway? Is she free too? Probably easy as well;-} Oops, I had better go...

Just a warning that since I installed DAZ Studio 1.7, I keep getting a startup error in Bryce 6 - so I can't run Bryce 6 at all now (even after I uninstalled D/S 1.7). I've reported this to DAZ & it may be something very specific to me, but I find it pretty annoying that one application can be wiped out by an update to a separate application (even if they are partially integrated). BTW, I'm running XP & Bryce 6 (not 6.1).

HI all.
Just discovered that too.
Does this one run over the top of earlier versions or do we have to delete them first? Do we have to reload Bryce 6 or is there a way to refresh the link between the two, I just got that app up and running after a lot of hassels so I really don't want it to crash! Also, is the D-form plug that is mentioned included or is that a separate plug in to buy?
Thanks for your help. Jen

D/S 1.7 uninstalls previous versions of D/S during the install. I just found the install file from my previous version (D/S 1.3.0.1) & reinstalled it & now Bryce starts up fine.

I'm on a mac and can't see content. I've used pref to load Poser runtime and I get the files listed, but no preview, thus no way to import without doing an import. Has anyone else had this prob on a mac? OS 10.4.9 1.67Ghz 512RAM ... D/S 1.7, yes - I restarted and I've tried everything I can think of to get the content preview to show thumbnails. Help please!

RHaseltine posted Sat, 04 August 2007 at 8:06 AM
The files a re listed, but with no thumbnails, or the files simply aren't listed? The latter would suggest you selected the folder as a DAZ|Studio content folder or selectd the wrong level (the Runtime instead of the folder holding the Runtime, perhaps).
