Hi there,
I just finished the last Harry Potter book and I want to add a priceless quote by Molly Weasly to my signature.
She calls someone a Bitch though. Is bitch allowed in signatures? Literally, not figuratively. :)
Cheers. :)

Why not? Bitch is not profanity, as far as I'm aware. I know it is - or was - a taboo word in the USA for a long time but it never really enjoyed that status here, even though both of us use it a a derogatory term.
As for language advisories in signatures generally, have you translated mine, Anton? :)

Ooooo, I like that one. I always say Fuck 'em if they can't take a hard one. Meaning whiney people get on my nerves. Times are tough (and times are tough sometimes) but folks love to moan and whine instead of getting busy to change what it is they can change!!!

I suspect that the word would not be acceptable in a signature.
Yes it is the term used to describe a female dog, however, it is also a profanity meant in a derogatory sense. And when people call someone a "Bitch", it's meant in a derogatory sense.

Nope, "jocularum" = joke, humour, humorous aside, funny comment.
The root of the words jocular and joke, also corrupted for "joshing", meaning to have a joke, make fun of.

I don't date or watch porn either. Of course I have a significant other so there is no need to date, hmm I suppose that goes the same for watching porn. Digital porn is a whole different ball of was though - but I wont get into my philosophies behind this.
Anyway as far as "bitch" goes, I think it should be allowed. I'm probably wrong : p

Use the replacement " female dog" for the word "bitch" and see if it riles anyone. Or use the Chiense translation.

I have never once heard anyone use bitch in casual conversation speaking of dogs.
Anyway, I love that scene in the book. She is refering to another woman.
Not quite sure when we got talking about porn or why. :)
Side note. I have a funny story......
Years ago during a typical PoserPros flame war, Calypso was harshly chain lecturing merchants about her views on proper merchant professionalism and conduct in threads.
Merrilyn Ellison came after her post and reminded her that she was a merchant herself and might be a hypocrite to which the very next response by Calypso to Merrilyn in the thread was ...
"Fuck off Bitch!"
I was pretty priceless. Sort of put the whole "I think.." crowd into perspective. Just another great moment in Poser history. :)

Just popping in to let youse know that we're discussing this in the staff forum. So far we're sort of split down the middle.
Anton, what's the full quote? Might help us decide.
BTW, I've heard "bitch" used to mean a female dog quite often, although generally by dog owner-breeders.

I'd just do it and see what happens.
Then again, my life is full of bad decisions.
Have we really come to the stage that we are afraid of offending someone with such a mild word; not directed at anyone? God save us, (guess life's such a bitch)

Ok.
Harry Potter is for which agegroup? 9-12 year olds I think?
If the editor / publisher let that one through in a book aimed at children, then I don't see anything wrong with using the quote for a signature.

Perhaps it may be peculiar to me then, but I always use the word bitch when talking about my female dog. I own both sexes, and it makes it easier to say that I have "A bitch and a dog". To me a dog is always male. I once had a friend who always referred to her bitch as a "Lady Dog" and I was more offended by that than by the word bitch :)

The correct name for a female domestic cat (in the UK at least) is Queen; the male is known as a Tom.

For years in the US, you've been able to hear the word bitch said and sung on the radio (EJ's Bitch is Back); it's said on TV, in the movies and now is being quoted from a "children's" book...
It's truly bizarre that this even warrants discussion...

The character is dueling Bellatrix. The exact quote by Molly Weasly is "NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!" In the context of the scene it is a great moment in the series. I suppose by itself it seems a bit odd of a quote but I love Molly.
OT: The books where designed to evolve as the fan base aged. Where the original was for a younger crowd, the series is now wriiten at adult level to adults as well. It is actually the only inccident of harsh language in the entire series.
