I think it would be mostly agreed that the computer, by and large, is the greatest invention in the history of mankind since fire. But unfortunately, this great and fabulous tool is in the hands, 90% of the time, of semi- educated chimps. To prove this, all you have to do is go to the grocery store checkout, and see how your tally can go awry by 3-4 dollars, with a sophisticated scanner handled by a high school drop-out. Discrepencies in bills, petty thievery, and major problems like identity misappropriation, are all common downsides to the PC, whether innocent mistakes or intentional. My point being, the PC is foolproof, if it wasn't for fools. Well, keywords, which supposedly send people flying to your page, suffer the same fate. You can rack your brains for hours coming up with the most colorful descriptive buzz, only to have it negated by the fact that the populace at large, can't spell worth a damn. I've looked at keywords on other sites, usually of the most popular pieces, to see what they use. Guess what? They don't use anything. No keywords. I'm talking thousands of hits per piece, not 10 or 20. I've been doing tests with different pieces over the past month. I chose pieces that have nothing to do with the keywords I used. I used just one keyword per piece. These are the keywords I used: Harry Potter, nude, naked, Spiderman, sex, anime, and violence. Harry Potter, naked and sex brought me stunning results. Apparently nude and violence were too hard for people to conjure up. Anime really bellyflopped, and on sites rampant with enthusiasts of that "Art" form. Apparently, that stuff rots your brain to the point that you can't even spell the word. My conclusions from this test are that keywords are a complete waste of time, and will get you very little more than you'd get without them. The best way to get people to your site, is to get out there and mix it up with your site community. Be more pro-active. And leave the keywords in the dictionary, where they belong.
