The following links to a discussion that includes a download link to Bantam3D, one of those little gems that you may find useful.
Bantam3D was available as freeware for a time but the source Site disappeared and it has been hard to find.
A nifty 'ground-cover' generator, it makes great grass (.obj format export).

there was another program they did, that would produce 'flocks' of items...I think Vue does that as well...I've downloaded Bantams' stuff several times, lawsy knows what CD I put it on...;)

They also had a freebie which I unfortunately lost when my hard drive went belly up a few months ago that allowed you to do hair (although admittedly it was a little on the poly heavy side) so if anybody has the link to that hair generating program please post a link. Thanks.
