Our September Challenge winner, Valerie-Ducom has asked me to announce the October challenge.  Here are a few words from her:

I would like for the october, the theme "Minimalism" :
A style of art in which the artist reduces the work to a minimum of elements.

Check out the website with information about minimalism in case anyone wants to research.

I think this theme will be a great challenge!  Let's run this until the last week of October, I will give you a day or so heads up and if anyone needs more time they can let me know.  You may enter an existing work if you like, but we would prefer to see a new work created for this challenge... it IS a challenge after all, lol!  You may enter more than one work, but remember that in the voting, each entry will be judged separately.  Please, please, please put titles on your entries, especially if you have more than one.

Let your imagination flow!!!

Since this is open to writer's as well, I decided to write a minimalist poem.  It takes me back to the Beat Generation of the 50's, the first time I ever wrote poetry.   Thinking of my birthplace in Southern California undergoing changes, and opening up a second chance for some to connect with what is important in life.

**SECOND CHANCE
**

** **

Life is good

          Got it all

                    Racing the wind

Wildfire

          Evacuate

                     Unknown

                              Remains

                                         Ashes

                              Stripped

                     Nothing

Rebirth

          Start over

                    Live simply

                              Minimalism

                    Family

          Love

Fulfillment

Hi, I'm new here; glad I found you! Here's my contribution: At Sea ...an abstract image created with Artmatic. I'm delighted that mine won't be the only abstract in the group. It might not be minimalistic in the true sense of the word, but it fits the definition in my mind. I hope you enjoy! Oh, this image is small in size, it's what I can share right now, but the size wasn't meant to be the minimalistic factor - it just turned out that way - ha! I noticed that contests are listed in pull down links; is there a way for the webmaster to put the challenges in pull down links too? Can someone tell me how/where the voting takes place? What an amazing group of entries we have this month!  Thanks for joining in to make this a great challenge.  It's now time to close the entries and let the voting begin!    The voting will be in this thread, after this entry.  You get to choose your 3 favorite entries, giving each of them 3, 2 or 1 points.  Remember, you are choosing an entry, not an artist.  If someone has posted more than one entry, you need to indicate which is your choice.

Your vote should look something like this:

Little - "Bits" - 3 points
e e cummings - "Words" - 2 points
Day - "Night" - 1 point

Feel free to nominate Honorable Mentions or make comments.

Valerie-Ducom - Minimalism art of flower - 3 Points

ICM - 2 Tone w/ simple line - 2 Points

Gog - Lightbulb - 1 Point

jstro posted Fri, 02 November 2007 at 3:16 PM

3 pts to Denger for Vertices1 – to me this really captured the essence of minimalism.

2 pts to gunsan for Morning Stillness – this just really appealed to me, simple and so peaceful.

1 pts to evielouise for Halloween – the simple subject set off by the dark contrast was great.

As trite as it sounds, there truly were too many wonderful entries for me to wrap my mind around the task of picking honorable mentions. It makes my brain hurt just thinking of about it. Terrific job, all.

**Minimalist art makes a bold statement, the strength of a given work deriving in part from its simplicity.  What the artist withholds speaks just as loudly (and often more loudly) than what the artist reveals.  In minimalism, a title can also be very important, since it may plant a suggestion within the mind's eye of the viewer.  The title affects an individual's interpretation of that piece.

In my opinion, minimalist imagery is always pared down to its most basic components; each part of the whole existing for a clear purpose: nothing is superfluous, nothing redundant, nothing excessive.

Based on these criteria, the task of voting for only three pieces became a daunting one, as there were numerous submissions which deserved a "3".  Those listed below certainly did.  That said, my vote reflects not only those works which are truly minimalism, but those which I believe show exceptional insight.  The following works clearly say something, and they say it in an unmistakably beautiful way...

RuyBerna        "Light Door"     3 *

jstro                 "Caution"          2

ARTWITHIN     "FLOW"            1

Deserving of Special Honorable Mention:

Conniekat8    "Solution"

Deserving of Honorable Mention:

Analog-X      "Face of Bubbles"

awjay            Excerpt from "Window on a Window"

*  It must be said that "Silhouette Kiss" by RuyBerna would have received my "3", had the brightness level of that image been reduced and the contrast level slightly increased.  In this instance, the good was the enemy of the best.**

Yep, you can say it loud.
I've joined to win, hoping in a smaller amount of entries than the previous challenges, and look what happened LOL
I'll be trying with the "Moron Olympics", maybe I'll have some more chances and some more luck with that LOL

Thank you!  I am honored.  Minimalism is very difficult to understand, as well as to create.  For me it is more like undoing a puzzle that is already assembled, and keeping only that which reflects the essence of the image.

Somehow I missed the results.  I got buried in preparing the 2D Sub-Community page, and I'm just now returning to consciousness.  ;-)

**Thank you!  This has been an exciting Challenge.  Both the level of participation and the quality of the entries were nothing short of exceptional.  There was not a bad entry in the bunch.

As an artist, it is always personally pleasing when a piece turns out well, but when a work is also recognized by other talented artists, the experience becomes both deeply gratifying and very humbling at the same time.  You see, without the unwavering support of my family and the continual encouragement from my fellow artists here at Renderosity (that's YOU!), I would likely never have pursued digital art or my photography, other than the occasional snapshot.  Your conversations, camaraderie, and comments (both the complimentary and, especially, the critical ones) have helped me to grow as a person and as an artist, providing the impetus for much of my work, including Vertices .

"We live by encouragement and die without it — slowly, sadly, angrily."    — Celeste Holm

May I invite everyone, and especially those of you who are new to the Challenge Forum, new to Renderosity, new to your present artistic medium or new to Art in general to stick around, stay involved, participate, and keep trying new ideas and techniques.  We learn so much from each other!  I have found the welcoming and supportive Art Community here at Renderosity.com to be the ideal place to do just that.
