I have 256 MB dedicated video memory on a laptop with ATI Mobility RADEON x700 card (class 2 vdeo card...supposed to be a good card)
amd turion solo core processor with 1 MB DDR ram.
I am running the Vue PLE inside of 3ds Max 9 on Windows Vista.
I discovered that vue cannot render using the default scanline renderer in 3ds Max, and that it has to use Mental Ray.
it takes almost 2 minutes to render one simple sky and a cube at 640 x 480 resolution.
is this normal?
ANY OTHER VUE XSTREAM USERS OUT THERE? how long does it take you to render such a scene with mental ray in 3ds max?????

Vista will slow any computer down especially when you only have 1 gig of Ram. The reason is that Vista takes about 400 to 495 megs of Ram just for the system. Since 3D apps need a lot of memory and at least 1 gig, you will probably have to upgrade to 2 Gigs before you notice an imporvement for your rendering. Win XP is a bit more generous and usually uses about 200 to 300 megs of Ram.

When it comes to rendering, only the CPU is used, not your video board, so your single core CPU will need some time to compute a Vue spectral sky. As Keenart said, you need more ram, Vista is so hungry. I have 2 gigs on my Vista laptop, and all works fine.

Yeah,I have a 2.4G Core 2 Duo and 2G DDR.XP ran smooth, but Vue didnt.I have Vista Ultimate now,and WOW! it smokes, you really need at least 2G RAM with Vista, but all in all it rocks! for me anyway.as far as XStream goes, forget it! I tried to run it a couple times with Cinema 4D..pppptthh what a friggin joke! Even with the updates it still sucks! but anyway,no ones fault right?

From a lot of reading I've been doing online recently, it would SEEM that rendering speed is mainly determined by RAM over everything else.
I'm glad to hear someone else had a bad experience with xStream and it's not just me. My system is not loaded, but I have the strong feeling that even with 2 Gigs of RAM Vue will NOT be blazing fast.
I am losing my patience with Vue. I did actually test it on a machine with 2 gigs of ram and it was still not satisfactory.
I thin they need to be more honest and realistic about their system requirements.

I have a 64 bit machine with 4 gigs of ram and xStream is ridiculously slow inside of C4D (when it's not crashing!).

Check the link to Peggys' tutorials about optimizing Vue render settings. Was created for Vue5, but completely accurate for Vue6, except, if I may say, that the quality of advanced effects slider can be set as low as 36% with Vue6, you'll understand when you read the pdf.
