The point about the SOW is that it has been said that everyone, when they first get their hands on Bryce - immediately they stick a shiny sphere over a water plane and press render.
S.O.W. = Sphere Over Water.
The trick however is to create something that is undeniably "a sphere", pretty much "over, under or through, water" (or some surface with some sort of reflection) but to do something a bit different with it before pressing the render button.
So I was thinking, how about everybody trying to come up with some sort of twist on the S.O.W.?
Not compulsory, just have a play with it if you feel like it.
Here are a few examples:
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1077757&member
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=976476&member
And it doesn't have to be exactly a sphere, here someone has taken the SOW concept and using metaballs, come up with this:
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=672033
And...

**SndCastie,
**Well, WIP's to this thread say, and finished renders post to your gallery and paste a link to them in this thread... how's that?
You could just post here if you like. No need for the gallery if you don't want. I've a feeling any of my SOW's wouldn't be good enough for the gallery - but as you can see from the links, some are.
**Rayraz,
**Possibly, possibly, but where's the water or similarly reflective substance? And I should have said - comfy chairs will no doubt be ready and waiting for anyone who veers from the path of Bryce righteousness, courtesy of The Bryster.
Or anyone else who's got one handy....

Wooo! Lots of nice new SOWs.
**Sophies,
**Very nice, looks like you put a good deal of work into that, I especially like the ripples under the closest beachball. might be nice to see a larger version, if you have one, as it's a bit hard to tell what the thing with the wing is, in this small image.
**SndCastie,
**I'll have to have a hunt through the fantasy skies, hadn't really looked at them much.
**ThunderStone,
**But those balls are definitely shiny, you can definitely see that they are reflecting their surroundings. Oh, and there's water, so it fills all the requirements. Great!

**Uho, I think they're coming to get me!!! Arrrgghhhh!

Hi Fran . The winged thingie is the Toon-Vulture from Daz . The water ripples are made in the terrain editor with a photoshop-filter . The ground is a texture i made in DTE and applied to the default infinite ground plane . The water and the land is only one texture (One of my Experiments :) The bad thing is that i can' t find a way to control the reflections the way i want them in the DTE ( I don' t want to have reflections all over the place like they are now , i want to have them to show up only in the watery part of the texture but no such luck :( I think this is why my new dual-core computer can ' t render this picture with shadows enabled in Bryce ( Reflections on the infinite plane AND shadows enabled at the same time seems to be a real killer :( I can post the picture in my gallery later today . Actually each S.O.W. is two spheres one inside the other. The outer one is slightly larger than the inner one and of different material. Then using the design as opacity map to expose the characteristics of the inner sphere. One can come up with some interesting designs. Been thinking of using fractals for the outer design to give a bejeweled effect.

**Sophies,
**Thanks for putting that up, it is much easier to see in the larger form, I see now that you've actually got ripples under all the beachballs, nice.
One thing I would change (and actually there are some shadows) I would put a little bit of reflection onto the beachballs, they look a little flat as it is, and perhaps a touch of specular.

Yes DaM, I like that piece very much. I just love what HDRI can do as a reflective object map feature. It gives it an entirely new dimension that can hardly be achieved through regular reflective mapping. With that I'm in total agreement, and not to detract from your wonderful image, but HDRI is available in Bryce ver. later than 5.0.1. Your image reminds me I'm an old-timer in Bryce.
As a side note, I'm wondering when Bryce 7.0 is looking to make a debut. I really do not intend to upgrade until well after Bryce 7.0 and even then it still has to show me that it's worth the expenditure before I fork over my hard earned cash since to me, anything after ver. 5.0.1 is really not worth the money to date IMO. I'm sure this topic is food for another thread. And perhaps it should spill over into a new thread.
Suffice it to say that although I can create HDRI effects with my older, higher end 3D graphics packages I hardly think that Bryce beyond 5.0.1 is hardly worth the cost for that feature and as a result I have held off buying into it. Also, I'm sure lack of real feature upgrades in Bryce in such a long time is the reason we don't have any real activity as we once enjoyed in this forum.
