This should be a fun challenge.
There are a few "rules" this time around

No tinting..that means no sepia, no added tone at all

It is prefered that you actually shoot your photo in monochrome, rather than converting it from color.

Today almost every camera will allow you to do this..

It's kind of a back to the basics challenge.

So there ya go..have fun exploring the simple yet exciting world of black and white photography

By sheer luck i was shooting this image for a challenge on another site for "isolation by contrast" black and white went hand in hand with that so here is an image that will probably not make my gallery.

Another example of my being a dollar short and a day late...... I just got home from a bonsai trip along the Eastern Sierras, had my camera, saw some "would be" wonderful lighting for monochrome, but alas I didn't really stop to take many pics, a few on the way home, trying to get a good elk shot, and then I get on here and see this is our new challenge! Oh well, I will have all month to try to get some great B&W, cuz you know how I love B&W!!!!
Thanks to whoever came up with this months theme....... and Happy New Year!!!

I have a strange feeling here...
this is called a challenge, but there is not challenge page (and hence no written rules, and hence the above questions...)
this is a challenge and I understand and agree that it is for fun (--> no votes) but there are also almost no comments... :-(
So, I understand why Kort is uploading his entry in his gallery... but I would like to encourage people to express their opinion, totally frankly, because we are here to learn, to improve...
So, I start giving my opinion on the already submitted pictures :

I really wish that others will give their opinions and advices...

Some days ago (before the start of the Forum challenge) I uploaded a B&W picture in my gallery (see link) hoping that the people I'm considering as THE masters of B&W (cixiidae, ges, olivier158) would make a comment and give me some advices... But, as I noted already before, B&W pictures generate less comments...  :~)

So, I'm now uploading a similar image here, asking for your true opinion...

Quote - It's kind of a back to the basics challenge.

I don't really think it is. After all, how much of a basis has B/W phtography been for anyone here? Sure, black and white has been the start of photography, but how much has it really been the basis of what the guys and gals around here do? If it has been, it has been a choice, but not a necessity, as it has been been when photography was really at its "basics". These days black-and-white photos are an artistic choice, not a "basic" - or so I would think. What the basics of photgraphy are can be defined from a historical POV, but will that really do the craft justice? Like most things photgraphy evolves, so should we really cling to the roots of it, or embrace the opportunities modern technology provides and make them our own? Nevertheless, this challenge got me thinking and I figured if I shot a B/W image I might as well shoot an image of a blackbird:

You are trying to use BBCode, whereas most of the post formatting seems to beased on HTML (as far as I can tell, being not very fluent in HTML). Gave me quite a headache too, for a while. What I do these days is save coding that works in a text file, replace parts of it when I want to post a new image, then copy-paste the whole block into my post. Might be a bit of a roundabout way to handle it, but probably doesn't take much longer than typing all the tags would.

Sorry I haven't had a chance to comment on any of the great stuff everyone has been posting to this one.

There is some really stand out material here...Gimi is correct about the nature of the forum challenges..

These are more informal and Iwe really do encourage you to interact with the other photographers and talk about what you posted or they posted, or different ideas or techniques..

jeroni's shot is my favorite so far...

Andreas, my point was, B&W is the basics of Photography..Sure a lot of people started in the color world, I'd be willing to bet quite a few here started in the digital world.

It's like asking (for example) Eddie Van Halen to play a set on an accoustic Guitar., or or asking "Will I Am" to record a Bluegrass band with one microphone on a single take. (Ok, that's a really obscure reference)

But it makes a point, It's an exercise in the basics..It's also a good way to explore and learn about the way light and dark work together

Agree with you Pushinfaders about the basic and great shool of B&W !

Not agree with your example Eddie Van Halen : he did a live stage exhib' with an acoustic solo for about 10 minutes...lol ! Maybe Joe Satriani or Dave Gilmour could suite better, but I am not sure as each guitar man (woman) began with acoustic ...

And as I understand the meaning of your comparison, I'd rather say : acoustic is at the guitar player what B&W is at the photographer...

But like Michel ( GiMi53) I hadn't some in my files, now which could perhaps challenge

A nice sunday to all of you my friends

Michel made a good point. I wish I could comment more but have been busy. There are a lot of great photos showcased in this challenge. In the B&W medium, I find the ones that work the best for me either have a great tonal range and lots of textures, or are very stark and dramatic. I'm not sure if my second entry falls into either category, but here it is.

TwoPynts posted Wed, 09 January 2008 at 11:32 AM

Oh, I almost forget, thanks Michel for the compliment. I don't feel like the IR master, but since I do it so much maybe I am starting to get the hang of it! ;'] Here is my third image. It started out as color since my small Pentax does not have a B&W mode, but I converted it directly to B&W when in Photoshop and work on it from that point on. I wanted to show that an image that is usually reserved for color (like a sunrise) can also look good in B&W. This would fall into the "dramatic" category I think. "**Come Fly With Me**"

Wow - this is some great stuff, you guys!  I've been really busy the past couple of weeks, and just now had time to check in.  Guess I'd better get busy!  Dang.  I'll have to read more of my camera manual and see if I can take shots in b&w.  If not, I'll convert some color shots.

Looking at everything up to this point, I'm struck by the variety, and by my obvious preferences.  I realize I tend to think of good subject matter for b&w shots in a certain way ... something I'd not thought of before!  (You're all  SO good for me!  You expand my mind.)  The things I like in b&w tend to be the kinds of things I shoot anyway.  Duh!  Well, I'm still on a pretty steep learning curve, and sometimes the most obvious things just haven't crossed my mind yet!  LOL!

Oliver's fan, Andrea's studio setup, Val's strange place, Elizabeth's hibiscus, and Kort's wheels all jump out and grab my attention.  Of course it's all just artistic preference, but hey ... there's mine!  :)

I'm looking forward to having a bit more time now, and getting into this challenge.  Great idea!  It's got my mind going already.

Richard, that sky looks awesome in b/w. The swirl really pops out.

Flannelman, you know I adore that canine companion you share space with but he is even more appealing in this b/w. I know its difficult to catch him with good contrasts because of his singular color but you have done a very good job and still retained good detail !

Tara, your buds are fantastic. So many times I've had to swap good color distinction for the detail in a macro but you managed to get both strong on these buds with the b/w.

Mick, your smoking tin is one of the best b/w photos I've seen in a long time. The gleam on the metal is not glaring but the grain of the wood is bold while retaining the fine detail in the writing. Maintaining that balance of contrast throughout a photo is difficult but you did a fantastic job.

CWT, I like your over all composition and it seems to do well in b/w. Have you taken this shot at different times of the day to see how the shadows play? It looks like a 3-part series throughout the day would  peek my interest.

The swan has good strength as do the eyes over flowers. In fact, both have great balance in the composition that brings out the balance in contrast.

I am finding there is great diversity in personal styles with b/w photography. Its a great way to learn what I can do to put a better spin on my shots.

This one is for the monochrome part.
The bridge of Arts in Paris, on a winter evening. No color editing as far as I remember.

I've always loved the stark contrasts you get when shooting snow scenes, it seems a natural for B&W. Although this wasn't shot in B&W, the only difference when I converted it was the blue cast went away.

So where do they go when a photograph leaves you speechless?

LovelyPoetess posted Sun, 27 January 2008 at 12:54 AM

Again, this wasn't shot in B&W, but with white snow, black tire and the almost covered raw wood fence there was mimimal change on conversion

LovelyPoetess posted Sun, 27 January 2008 at 1:00 AM

This ice meets ice at the edge of a freezing lake is so close to B&W that I've not converted.

BTW, I've had about enough of this cold, can someone turn up the weather thermostat?

Those Snow scene's are beautifull , Especially the ones with the poles , I'd consider swapping places with you if you like almost constant grey skies filled with Rain (Things are improving slowly)
Congrrats LovelyPoetess thanks for sharing!

I absolutely LOVE the lake scene. The only thing I know of that could improve it would be to crop it into a square format. I would crop out the bottom part because there is nothing there that is particularly interesting or beautiful. Other than that I think it's gorgeous and wouldn't change a thing.

rufous posted Sun, 27 January 2008 at 9:13 PM

Wow, nearly missed this one... great entries! Val's "strange place is gorgeous, Mrslubner's Escheresque state capital stairs, flannelman's "rose among thorns", offrench's "Limousin morning"... ...Well here goes the first- A world in a tree

Another picture that lends itself to the challenge...

...And another try..."The path into the forest,,,,," Have to get these all done tonight, for I know I'll probably not get another chance before the end of the week (and month!)

Rufous I love your "A World In A Tree Image" Congrats
My last submission is presented below , I cropped due to not liking the different coloured BrickWork:

Another conversion from color.  I think I'll post the color version in my gallery this week.

Ohhhh, now I'll have to be patient and wait to see the coloured version, Auntietk. Although I like the B/W I'm curious to see if the pitchers are silver or something in a brass tone.

And Rufous, I believe I've been to that continent in your tree world (about 9 oclock on the left there). Nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there...    Cool shot!

Nice capture on the graffiti, CWT I've never tried it, but it must be liberating to see the world as your canvas, don't ya think?

Yes I do LovelyPoetess,
Probaly somebodys only chance of expressing Liberation.
Painting the World is out of reach mind , Majority of Graffiti you'll find is scribble's due to it being illlegal to deface , Finest examples you'll find in abandoned & generally difficult to reach area's,
Seems were going of topic a little :D

I'll take & upload a few examples of the work you get in derelict factories , Uninhabited places!
Scarpers before I incur the wrath of the mods :D

Tc all ,
Peace!

Great shot there CWT, I looked at both the colour and the B/W and I have to say I think the B/W is more visually gratifying.

Funny how that syncronicity thing works, we get on the subject of graffiti, and what do I hear on the radio on the drive home from work? Of course, a bit about a program called "Graffiti Zone"

Passing along the link in case it piques anyone's interest.
