I've long mocked Vista, lol, but really want to get 64 OS so I can use more RAM, so can do things easier in Vue, like load up more Poser and other models in one go.

Which version is better? Home or Ultimate? Etc

Recent PC, 6 months old, ASUS p5B deulxe MB, so that should be fine, core duo Intel CPU
nvidia 8600GTS, Audigy2.

Ta for any help :)

I also have a P5KE, something like that mobo and I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 with it no problems.  I have 8 Gig RAM in there also, my proc is a Q6600. My graphics card is similar, an 8600 GT

I always use the Poser Shader Tree on my imports into Vue6Inf and with this system have not encountered any issues with OOM messages, I have one issue which remains unresolved and not sure what is causing it, and that is my Mouse over tool tips don't work, no biggie though, can always get what I don't know from the manual!!

If you don't want Vista, I believe you can still get XP64 but I find Vista ok and they send improvements nearly every day [LOL].

I run vista 64 and I cannot go back to 32 for rendering. Vue runs much more smoothley for me under vista 64. I only have 3 gigs of ram but have never run out with 64 and i do some pretty heavy scenes. Quad core doesnt hurt either =p.

edit - you'll want ultimate as im not sure the other version come in 64 bit flavor but again im not sure

I will play the “Devils Advocate,” for the moment.  I run both 32 and 64 bit systems using Vue for a long time now.   Other than the memory needs, the 64 bit system is faster by about 10% over the 32 bit system.  About the crashing issue, when Vue plays “Bad Boy,” the crash is usually different between the two systems.  The 32 bit system usually crashes and then you just restart Vue and go back to work.  If the 64 bit system crashes, Vue almost always will force a BSOD, which causes your system to reboot.  That all means that you want to have your work frequently backed up just in case a BSOD occurs when using 64.

That said, most of these crashes are related to OpenGL and memory allocation issues, which is not so frequent when you have lots of onboard RAM.

Go with the 64 even if you do not like Vista.

I'm used to Vista Ultimate 64bit (i wanted the full package with every option and gadget available for Vista, no lower cut version anymore) now and even i have a 32bit Windows XP running on another partition, i just never go back to XP and use it - just  for some special checks, but happens rarely. To me Vista runs smoother, reacts better to program crashes and lots more i like with Vista, now that since it's release many official (automatic) updates made it to a good OS in my eyes.

Sure - your system has to be in par with this OS - meaning if you got just a medium system, you might have more trouble.

I run it on a Quad Q6600 CPU, a fast 8800 GTS graphics card, 4GB Ram and lots of harddisk space. This probably makes a difference and i wouldn't really want to run it on a lower machine. Running the build in Vista benchmark under Computer details, my system calculates a 5.6 benchmark index, the highest reachable for now shows as 6.0 !  So i'm close to the highest preset benchmark value with my system - so i guess that's a sign, too, that things run smooth in my Vista OS most of times. Doesn't matter if it's graphics, video cut and calculation, music applications, the most recent games ...

And if Vue really crashes, i never have (had) to reboot my system in Vista (by hand or automatic) to right now - just call the task manager and cancel the process ...

I have two machines running XP Pro, one 32 bit and one 64. (The 32 bit one is only to run SkinVue which doesn't run on 64 bit yet.) Vue has never caused a BSOD on either machine. In fact the only time in tha last year I got a BSOD was because of bad memory. Google for memtest86 and run it for a few hours. My P5B (not deluxe) does not work with the BIOS memory remapping feature enabled - it gets errors on one test.  Since I disabled the feature - I get 7.5 GB istead of 8, so what - the system has not blue screened.

If I assign a Realms Arts forest ecosystem material to a 1 kilometer square terrain, Vue warns me that I am doing something stupid. I say go ahead and end up with 39 billion polys. No problems. :thumbupboth:

My 64 bit machine:
ASUS P5B, Intel Q6600, 8GB OCZ RAM, ASUS Nvidia 8800GTX 768MB video, XP Pro x64.

My 32 bit machine:
An HP with an MSI ATI chipset motherboard, AMD 4400 X2, 2GB RAM, ASUS Nvidia 7900GT, XP Media Center.

You should keep a copy of XP 32 around for dual booting if you use stuff like SkinVue. AFAIK there still is no 64 bit version of this plugin.
