I've been experimenting with volumetric lighting so that I get a good beam from a prop flashlight. However the angle is too wide. I can't seem to find the right dials or setting to make this a NARROW beam. Does anyone know how to do this?

For a spotlight I think you need to fiddle with the "start" and "end" dials. Here is a thread that explains how that works.

angle start and angle end are the two you are wanting. Angle End specifically - smaller the number, narrower the beam

okay thanks. To get the beam to come out of the prop flashlight I am having to place the actual spot pretty far back so tha the width of the spot matchs the diameter of the flashlight end. I wish than intial angle could be made wider - as is I have a light well behind a prop that does not cast shadows...is there and eaier way that I am not thinking of here?

Dist start will affect the starting point beam width...is that what you need?
hamiltonpl posted Sat, 26 January 2008 at 6:13 PM
Maybe......what value would you use to have the width be wider at the beginning of the beam? Also, is there a limit to the number of spotlights within a scene that can render volumetrice effects? I have TWO. One will render and the other will not......

Quote - Maybe......what value would you use to have the width be wider at the beginning of the beam?
Angle Start 10 (example)
Angle End 3
Wide beam beginning and narrowing at the end.

To the best of my knowledge, the above quote is not correct. As I understand it, 'Dist Start' will NOT affect the starting point beam width. Dist Start will only work when Dist End is used, Dist End sets sets the distance at which the light will cease to have any effect, Dist Start sets the distance at which the light intensity will start to fall off.

Yes, I misspoke. Hence; my follow up thread above.
Let's just keep this dirty little secret (mistake) between ourselves shall we?
