Subject: How do I get the Poser Parameter dials in Carrara for posing?

Entering numerical values in the properties area is really inconvenient and dragging on manipulators gets things screwed up.  How do I access the parameter DIALS as in Poser?

Theres no dial for rotation or things like that. Maybe someone can do a plugin for this.

When you AD the runtime to your Carrara import list .. the one in the lower part of your screen.

then you can load figures etc etc from the Poser runtime directly into CAR just like loading them in poser.
Then you have the dials for moving the arms etc etc..
And you can load the cloths etc and conform them from withing CAR ...

I hope this is what you meant  😉

So, instead of dials we have sliders.

I finally noticed when opening the file, there is a little portion of the dialog box asking where the morph target is at...

However, I wonder, should I be ticking off all the other options too? IK Chains, Genitalia...etc?

I believe the manual says to check em  all Joe.

Are the Translate-rotate dials? I can only see morph dials.

We have C6Pro, and I can only see sliders

**Here you can see that I have loaded up my runtime from Poser 6 and imported the Lion.  I then selected one of his body parts, but have no parameter dials, or sliders to control motion.**

Motion are controled in the Motion tab (not in the General tab), but theres no dial there. Only have fields for numbers.

Dan, try a Vicky. You know how I was complaining about the lack of morphs in V4? Ha! They all appear in Carrara!

UVdan, in Carrara you have two ways to control rotation: numeric and using the gizmo (rotation tool), the dial or sliders is a way that Poser use to control the channels. You cna see those channels in the Motion tab only.

the poser 4 lion has almost no morphs, hence there aren't gonna be any dials showing in
c6pro, excepting the lion's head, which has got 3 morphs.  the other unmodified p4 animals
are similar in their lack of morphs.  poser will usually show approx 7 - 10 dials for
such figures' elements, but none of 'em are usually morph dials, unless one has installed
a new version of the cr2 file that contains morphs (sold by daz, CL, e-f et al.).

DAZ has obviously canceled the translation "dials" in C6. In C5 they were there. I want them back.

Poser content objects are treated the same way as normal Carrara objects as far as moving and rotating goes.  Just make sure you have them grouped the way you want them if you want to move an entire figure complete with clothes and props.  Its easier than the poser method actually.

operaguy posted Sat, 09 February 2008 at 10:49 PM

There are no sliders for rotation, translation or scale. [RTS]

Sliders will appear for all other morphs.
[Unfortunately, you can't adjust the min/max in Carrara as in Poser]

As told by others above, you can achieve RTS several other ways.

  1. use the actual manipulators; there is one for each, plus a combo. in my experience direct manipulation works much better in Carrara than in Poser
  2. under the  "motion" tab, type in the values.
  3. in the sequencer, drill down and you will find graph editing for RTS. you can grab keys and move them in the graph editor.

As to why there are no sliders for RTS in Carrara......unknown (at least by me)

Hey DAZ please put some parameter sliders in Carrara for poserized characters!  The other methods of motion control are just too damn cumbersome!  Click and dragging on the universal manip. distorts my characters and spins body parts uncontrollably and entering numbers in the rotation boxes takes far too much time to get any animation done.

ABSOLUTLY,I never use this odd direct way -neither in poser nor in carrara.I want some  trans/rotate sliders. For those who prefer the direct controlling , they can still do it their way.

GKDantas posted Mon, 11 February 2008 at 5:58 AM

Just a note here to see if helps: when you select a numeric field HOLD the ALT key and you get a simple dial. I hate this kind of ghost feature, you never remember about everything...

Instead of using those silly and slow dials like in poser, you do things much more directly in Carrara 6.  Simply select the body part you want to move, then go to the rotate control (or the move/translate control if the part is at the end of an IK chain) an then grab the control handles and move the part however you wish, though usually there are limits set.  It works much faster, move much more fluidly, and subtly.  I found that worrying to much about numbers (is that 70 degrees? 75? 72?) that is made posing very robotic .  Now I just bend and arm and a shoulder, grab a hand or foot, and place them were I wish.

You actually can do this in Poser as well using the direct manipulator tool, but poser doesn't move fluidly enough for it to be practical.

GKDantas posted Sun, 17 February 2008 at 6:33 AM

You are right Madmachine, sometimes we dont like to change the way that things works, but I never liked the way that Poser do rotation and move without handlers... I almost dont use the "dials" in Carrara, just jump from Universal Manipulator to the others all the time in the Perspective view...much fun and much better.

Madmachine my characters twist up into knots when grabbing parts and moving them directly with the mouse and the Carrara motion tab is a slow way to get things done by entering numeric values.  I find Posers dials way superiour in this aspect.

Madmachine posted Sun, 17 February 2008 at 4:23 PM

Don't use the motion tab unless you need an exact value or scale.  I never do, I only use the two tools, "rotate" primarily and "move" secondary (I find the "universal manipulator" to be a little cramped and too easy to misclick).  First, I select the body part from the tree, so it and all its children are highlighted, the I slip off to the other side of the screen to find the right tool.  Once that is done, you should see either a sphere of red, blue, and green circles, or the move arrows of the same colors.  Each color refers to a direction and if you click on the colored line, you only manipulate the object along that axis.

I have used poser since Poser 4 and those silly dials for movement are what is keeping me from using it seriously now.

operaguy posted Sun, 17 February 2008 at 4:35 PM

i am not one to disparage Poser's controls as much as some others here, but right now I am in Carrara and enjoying the manipulators.

Two additions to what was just said.

  1. your rotate/trans/scale tools do not need to be "off to the other side of the screen." You can tear off that short bar and move it to a more convenient place.
  2. you also don't have to select the body part from the list on the right.
         a) direct click on the body part works better in Carrara than in Poser, although it still can be frustrating sometimes.
        b) if you right-click near the part you want, you'll get a pop-up of 'likely' suggestions and then choose one.

::::: opera :::::

Madmachine posted Sun, 17 February 2008 at 6:58 PM

I was using those as defaults to make things easy to understand.  I know they can be moved and clicked on, but that is the default location.  And clicking the bodypart on the instance list means you are guaranteed to click the right part, as a few poser character have some strange Joint mesh zoning (not sure if I am describing that right).  Vicky 3's Body part zones compared to Vicky 4's for example.

(and I forgot about #2 part B)

cryptojoe posted Mon, 18 February 2008 at 11:34 AM

**Dan, try setting the screen up with all four view-ports like Rhino,, which, in my estimation, is a much better program when it comes to the user interface, you can do everything with a mouse, like scroll, right click to pan, well, you know what I mean Dan.

I'm going to try to set up a DAZ Character this week in Carrara, so, I will try it using the four view-ports so I can directly manipulate. Carrara's controls are much better than Poser, too bad we can't use Rhino's interface for Posing...it is far superior yet!**

cryptojoe posted Mon, 18 February 2008 at 3:18 PM

Dan, I understand your disappointment with the lack of true dials for manipulation. The dials in Poser give me fits man, but we just have to deal with what we have.

Anyway, if you can't manipulate your characters well in the four view-ports mode, try a different mouse.
