Hi
Will Bryce5.5 import a mesh from Blender ?
If so how do I go about it.
Sorry, yes am another newbie.
THANKS
RodsArt posted Thu, 21 February 2008 at 7:14 PM
Export your mesh to an "OBJ" format from Blender into a specified Project folder.
In Bryce click on: File / Import Object.
....continue your creation
I have a secret for you.......Everyone here was at one time a Newbie. Good to have you aboard.

Well said about 'newbies' Rod.
Welcome to the Bryce Forum bluebott, you'll find a lot of help here. We may seem to be a tad wacked at times, and ramble a bit, but we're a friendly and helpful bunch.
Just beware the wrath of the Bryster. ;)

Thanks a lot for your help guys . Have only had Bryce 5.5 a short while ,so have a lot to learn.I like the way you can get results even with very little knowledge in this program which gives you a boost to want to learn more. Unlike some that you just hit a brick wall and lose the desire to even try again.
Great , Thanks.

Seeing you have have mentioned it I best keep up to speed on this. What does it have to offer that 5.5 has not got.?
Sorry for the stutter there!

Blueblott: B6.1 has the ablility to export objects created in Bryce apart from terrains. It's a bit tricky but it does work.

B6.1 can also take advantage of multi-core CPUs for rendering and has a Random Replicate function which can come in handy for randomly scattering stuff around a scene.

Hey Bryster! I have all the original albums on vinyl. Should burn them to CD so I can hear 'em more often.
Bought when they were new and so was I.
Guess that gave away my age. :D
One of my favorite bands too, along with Genesis. Love both of them.
PS:
Does that mean I'm Un-Banned and no Comfy Chair?
See we've had a bit of rain here in LA and my Secret Lair (Pat. Pend.), is a bit, shall we say, 'leaky', (damn those low bid contractors) and my 'Ray of Consoxolated Baba' (Pat. Pend.) is getting a tad damp too, (damn those low bid contractors).
I'd like to come out and play. :(

Fran, I guess one day I also will be able to talk in abreviations,no your not missing out on a hidden feature in Bryce. Istant Back Lighting was just a stab in the dark as to what IBL is!!
"Newbie Ahoy"
The RR (Random Replicate) you mention could that be used in a terrain situation to create city blocks of various heights, a city scape if you like?
As I have this urge to create a city then make the camera fly through the streets between the blocks.
Is this possible in Bryce ?
I had a try at animation without reading up on it .Imported the Blender monkey, opened the animation tools. Created Sky. Sea, with great sunset relections ,topped it off with Gold Blender Monkey. Moving to the timeline I moved Monkey around etc etc.
I in all done 37 frames. A tad over one second.
One hour and fifteen minutes later the render completed!!!!!
I must have been doing too much at once.???
Many thanks for all your freebies out there Fran.

blueblott, you mention doing a city fly-by anim.
Unless you've built your own city, you might try using City Generator, (Download.com). It just generates random heightfields in black, white and gray. You'd have to use texture Mats for it to look like a city, (there's some Mats and models over at 3DCommune - you'll have to join - HUGE selection of Bryce stuff). Unless Mats are procedural that look like crap closeup.
I'd just use those cities to practice your animation skills, not for any serious work.
Of course you can make your own heightfields using any paint program.
As I remember, you can use Bryce to make heightfield cities in the Terrain Editor by selecting an option, then dragging while holding the control key (if you're using Windows).
Anyone remember how to do that?
I haven't used Blender enough to know how easy it is to model a city (I'm sure it can), but you could try Wings3D, (I've been banned, what the hell).
Fran and many, many other make some fantastic models with that free program.
Now, as to The Bryster:
I have all the Yes albums too, including their first one. Gotta burn those too when I find the time. Got 'em when I was in college. Ahh... the magic year of 1969. I'm sure some of you remember 1969. Well at least some of it. ;)
I should change my signature to the GBShaw quote about 'youth being wasted on the young'. :)

Oh, and by the way, have you downloaded DAZ yet? Lots of free Poser and DAZ models here at Rendo you can import into Bryce.
Note to The Bryster: The 60's and 70's wasn't that much of a blur.

You know that's actually a pretty good name for it, since with IBL you do get things lit around the back, and the front, sides, top, bottom etc etc.
(actually means "Image Based Lighting" but as in the light lab it just says IBL, that's what most people call it.)
"The RR (Random Replicate) you mention could that be used in a terrain situation to create city blocks of various heights, a city scape if you like?"
Well I could... but as I already made a load of city blocks in Wings and imported them to Bryce some time ago... well I'd have to have a lot of time on my hands to use RR for that...
I'm (of and on, when I have time) creating roads and city buildings to more of a plan than randomness will allow.
" As I have this urge to create a city then make the camera fly through the streets between the blocks.
Is this possible in Bryce ?"
It certainly is, it's often been done before.
But if I was doing one, I'd want more accuracy and detail than a randomly replicated city could produce, since the camera would be pretty close if flying down streets, and you'd need good details or it'll look... well... crappy.
"Moving to the timeline I moved Monkey around etc etc.
I in all done 37 frames. A tad over one second.
One hour and fifteen minutes later the render completed!!!!!

Nope, sounds pretty normal to me, actually 37 frames in one and a quarter hours sounds quite fast! Depending on how big the renders were, and how much glass, lights and complex textures there were.
" Many thanks for all your freebies out there Fran."
You're welcome.
dan whiteside,
40 trees or 12 rocks or grasses, eh?
Right ho. I've not used trees much since I don't think much of the quality of them. Especially for close-ups.
I'll have to investigate this RR box and the land function... sounds simple enough. Thanks for the info.
deadwarrior,
*"As I remember, you can use Bryce to make heightfield cities in the Terrain Editor by selecting an option, then dragging while holding the control key (if you're using Windows).

*Nope, be interested if you find out though.
*"I haven't used Blender enough to know how easy it is to model a city (I'm sure it can), but you could try Wings3D, (I've been banned, what the hell)."
*You know it wouldn't be that hard to make some pretty decent cities in Bryce itself, even without using the terrain editor. If you had the time to do it... (I'm currently very busy)
*"Fran and many, many other make some fantastic models with that free program."
*Aw... ain't he sweet? Thanks for that.

Found It Fran and blueblott!Knew I'd seen the damn thing. These tips are for Bryce 4. I tried the cities trick, ( Hold the ALT Key and slide the Posterize Button).
I tried it on various fractal terrains and it mad some unusual stuff. Give it a try and see what you come up with

A big thankyou to all for your help and advice.
Great to know your out there.
Well Fran looks like I need a second P.C for rendering if it takes that amount of time.
That s without any soundtrack , still could add the sound track in my video edit program.
Yes I do have WINGS which is easier than Blender for me to use . I thought that after doing the random buildings and deciding the path the camera would take I would then go through and just select which buildings would be in the camera eye and detail them only. Bit like the making of those cowboy flicks, just a facade at the front. This could also cut down on render time,Maybe!
Will go take a look at "City Generator" thanks DeadWarrior.Oh and yes I have DazStudio which works fine with Bryce as I have discovered.A good gateway to importing stuff into Bryce.
Perhaps better make that another two P.Cs cut render time by half!!

Note: To those of you in the UK, Europe, Australia or Cydonia. Bitchin was a popular American slang term during the 1950's and 1960's. It meant ,very very cool.
Needless to say, as the years have rolled by, the meaning of the word has undergone a bit of a change.
Hope that clears things up. ;)

**Yeah, was a bit hard to read. Lol.
but what you said about using the random terrains or otherwise greebled city blocks in the background, with more detailed stuff along the camera's route for close-up's is definitely the way to go.
In my opinion anyway.
I'm currently trying to greeble up a tower - using wings so I have some control over it, but I'm still not totally happy with the result yet.
I've had to remake the tower in Wings, since exporting the Bryce-made tower reverses loads of normals making it unusable in anything but Bryce, and I need the control of Wings for the detailing.
I wish Daz would sort out that 'feature' of Bryce's exporter - cos it's a total pain in the doodahs.
