It's very well written, and sadly true in alot of ways.

That was some good writing, unfortunately i do feel somehow the same about peps asking questions in the forum and then are to lazy to reply or comment on the answers they get.

Maybe it cant be compared but it still annoys me.

i read that way back when i started 3d. it makes a lot of good sense,it's because of this i log nearly everything i use in my images so i can thank the creators.i am always suprised and overjoyed that they visit my pages and let me know they appreciate the note. i've made a lot of friends that way. besides i have no idea how people even begin to construct say a complete outfit for vicki.it's only rght that i aknowledge the fact that they put in the work.where  would we be without them? kudoes for digging that up bobby .

My best freebie download was Apollo Maximus. My only bitches about it is that it is hard to work with if you're not a Poser maven, which I'm not, and that there isn't a female version lol. I like Apollo far better than I do Mikey, and I absolutely loath Vicky. And I'd like it just once if someone would make conforming clothing that would conform to a smaller breast size. I've never been dissatisfied with a freebie to the point I would actually bitch about it. I mean, it was free. some are better than others. If it doesn't work for you, don't use it. Not like you lost anything.

I do agree with the guy that if something is free there should be no limitations on use. If I make something free, I've given it away. What do I care what someone does with it, as long as they don't try to sell it or claim it as their own. Of course, I'm not an anal retentive ego seeking attention hog either.

Unfortunately, MANY "Freebies" are FREE because they're based on copyrighted items and the Freebie maker has no rights to allow you to use their work in a commercial project.

How can you expect a commercial license for Star Trek, Star Wars, Lost in Space, Marvel or DC Comics etc...  related items when the Freebie make doesn't own those rights to give you? People need to think about these things before going off on the freebie provider's for something that shouldn't be an issue.

Anyone who downloads a freebie based on a commercial trademarked item should be bright enough to know that they can't use it in any way which would compete with the copyright/trademark holder's properties.

That being said, why would you think you should be profited based on someone else's work in the first place?

FutureFantasyDesign posted Thu, 17 April 2008 at 12:42 PM

I thought I would just sign in as one of those people who really does think if you post it make it free to use whatever. I make them and have no issue (*but then I am not as good as many who do this). But I do see the point of the link explaination. So I don't know if I am still bad for thinking that way?

I see so many beautiful works for free, and I always request if I can use it in any commercial 2D effort I make if I collect it. So if someone complains about why it can't be used commercially, but never makes the effort to ask nicely, I do understand that would make anyone say...well too bad.

Now, for everyone that takes the time to make and offer freebies. I would like to say Thank You! Sincerely! I mean that. I don't use very many, compared to most. Once in a great while I collect a freebie or two. But rarely. But because there are lots of folks who can't afford expensive stuff. Thats why I say they can use my meger offers any way they want.  Hence why I think that way I think.

The post was informative. And I take away a new look on the issue.

I think we all just want to have someone look, recognize and say thank you for making an effort to do something nice for other people without expecting anything but a nod of appreciation.

:) NOD!

Hugs

I got a laugh out of that. Especially the top myths part.

There's also the people who complain about textures, but don't seem to notice that there's a nice template included and the UVs are already there. Figure it out already. And then there's those that gripe about rigging, but don't realize that not everyone has that specialty - some things shouldn't look like Gumby after a skiing acident involving a wood chipper. Considering that it's free, and if they want it done right, those people should try rigging it themselves.

Also some freebie makers aren't afraid of additional developments or improvements done to their models. Provided the spirit of the original design is intact, they wouldn't mind taking back a more finished item based on the original "plain" model (but now with rigging and textures) - then adding credits for the additional work to an updated release package.

Another ironic thing is that it's rare to ever see freebie add-ons for freebies, but if you were to ever take the same thing and sell it somewhere...  All of a sudden there's people developing related props and textures for it. Why is that?

What about geographic restrictions on a freebie, is it okay to bitch & moan then? Right now there's a new one on offer (e-book) I'd like to have but when I go to the download page all I get is get the polite-with-much-legalese-thrown-in version of "Not American? Not welcome!"

Guess not only will I not be getting the freebie but I won't be buying anything from that place either.
Not because I don't want to but it won't let me. And it's the artist who loses out with a setup like that, since only Americans can see his work, he doesn't get maximum exposure/sales.

SGT2005 posted Wed, 21 May 2008 at 9:34 AM

@ **pauljs75 It has happened but you are correct, most freestuff items do not get the support it needs,  like additional textures or addons. I would encourage people maybe to write to the author of the freestuff item. See if you can develope an add on or extra textures for that item.
The worst they could say is "no".

Byrdie: Have you tried accessing the site via a U.S. based web-proxy service? Or on occasion using a web translation service might work too. (Provided the server is U.S. based.) That should get you around the IP range conundrum.

First thing I thought of, unfortunately none of the free proxy services I know of will work with sites that require a sign-in and/or have limits on download sizes. To get that you have to buy a premium proxy service and I don't know enough about such things.

byrdie: ok, i'm going to say to you what i said to any of my friends when they lost an auction because seller refused to ship to their country:
you did not want the item! it was (old/moldy/the wrong size or color/incompatible and your spouse/kids/pets would hate it!

translation: if it were the right thing you would have gotten it. why would anybody tell you you cannot DOWNLOAD if you are in a forgeign country??? shipping is one thing (customs) but a download?

you don't want to deal with that site (and neither do i, trust me. i love to grrr at them but i don't know where they live).

shame on them and i'm sorry they rejected you. you will find a better one!

ok, that is my bitchandmoan contribution :)

as an artist: nothing is truly 'free'. somebody spent the time creating that 'freebie'. somebody thought it up and designed it and then made it work and put it where the universe could get it.
one should NEVER just snatch something without thanking the artist! this is as bad as kids snatching candy trick-or-treating and not saying thank you.

if you ever want more freebies thank the ones who make them and give them a reason to want to make more :)

ok...that was the soapbox part ;)

i don't do 'shy' if anyone had not noticed. i will always take the side of the underdog. :)

Fyrespiryt's site, linked in the original post, is now defunct; and her new site has no 3D content any more. So I'm happy to announce that the Freebie Bitch 'n' Moan page is now mirrored at Morphography (aka home for fallen freebies), in case anyone should wish to refer to it.

Oh, and her freebies are at my site too. However the dad-blamed forum editor won't allow me to put links in the body of my post any more, so since I can only post one link you'll have to figure out where they are for yourselves. :-)

I know how to do it, in theory, and have done it in the past - however now, the link entry dialogue box just sits there like a blank white square. Because that's all it is. :)

I also can't add links by typing the HTML now.

Little_Dragon posted Wed, 26 August 2009 at 9:05 AM

The HTML method stopped working quite some time ago.

Does your browser have something like NoScript active, or a popup blocker?

EnglishBob posted Wed, 26 August 2009 at 9:14 AM

I'm using Opera (Opera USB 9.64, to be precise), and all content is enabled for Renderosity. However I have had occasional glitches in other areas which suggests my browser isn't as perrfect as I would like to think - I wasn't trying to suggest it was Renderosity's fault, by the way. Everything else is, but not this. :)

By the way, before the recent Opera updates which fixed a load of JavaScript related problems, the fancy editor didn't show up at all for me, and I was free to type HTML in directly. I could probably switch it off again and go back to that if I wanted.

First of all, I just wanted to put in my two cents regarding the freebies...

While some of them are not so well made, the majority of them are well made and if put in the store would probably fetched a goodly sum.

I appreciate the freebie makers because without them my V4 and others would still be naked and my "art works" would be rated XXX.  I also appreciate their work.

In other words:**

Thank You!!!

i have to agree with most of the comments made in the link, being a freebie maker i've had people bitch that my items weren't 100% historically accurate or that details were wrong etc... though so far everyone has been good about respecting my usage rights etc... those that have griped don't seem to understand that although not perfect, my freebies were done as best i could within the skills i have... alot of time has gone into the work and some apreciation of that would be nice at times... i was almost driven out of doing any more because some people spent all their time running my work and efforts down instead of offering help or even thanx... i was lucky enough to have met some very wonderfull people in the community however, and they offered support, assistance and in some cases even work of thier own to improve what i had done... though i do have one quibble... i did mine and put them out as freebies to give something back... for years i've downloaded freebies but had nothing to offer in exchange... now i'm putting my own works out for others to enjoy to make up for all the years of enjoyment i've gotten from other peoples works... to all those other freebie makers i am humbled and very very greatfull!

I've personally been bitched at for a freebie I've made: to be precise, because it didn't work with Daz Studio. I always list in my readme that it may not work in Daz Studio and hasn't been tested in Daz Studio because I'm not a D|S user...lol. I'm a Poser user. Therefore, my freebies are geared toward (surprise, surprise) Poser. I've been using Poser for a decade at the very least and feel comfortable in it, though I'd like to learn D|S. I'm just not there yet ;o).

I'm not perfect and neither are my freebies, but I must admit I was put off a little bit having been attacked for something I'd put out for free with very few usage restrictions. Other than that, I didn't feel it was right to stop making freebies and punishing the general majority who were thankful for the little bits of junk I make...lol.

As to how I resolved the problem? I made the dang freebie D|S compatible. Was just easier than listening to the moaning...lol.
