This month we want you to make a splash or two.  With water, milk or any other liquids.

The link is to Martin Waugh's web site just to give you some idea's of what can be achieved with lots of practice. He does provide a tutorial.  Don't worry if you don't have his fancy equipment.  A tripod, a bowl and jug works fine.

Most of all just have some fun!

Here is a link to one I did just using a tripod a shallow tray a jug and some food colouring.

That's not as easy as it sounds or looks... I 've been playing in the kitchen and my shots are all out of focus.  But of course, I am still trying to figure out the manual settings ;-) and the basics of this stuff... lol.  Try, try again.

Fred255 posted Sat, 01 March 2008 at 5:14 PM

OK I will come clean it took me a couple of days and about 500 shots to get my sample.  Don't worry it's just a bit of fun.  No prizes just some fun and learning experience.

One tip I can give you, is prefocus on a predefined point where the drops are going to be.

**mrmadmikie - That's incredible! Here's my humble offering. I haven't actually tried this before so here's a novice's try at catching a drop....

Green Drop!

Cool stuff so far gang. I've never really done drop shots so I 'll have to give it a go. To those intimidated by the idea, just give it a try. Otherwise, the theme is "liquid sculptures" so perhaps you could conceive some other form of it? ;']

Wow, you are pretty good, and make me a bit shy for my entry......but any way.... this is a drop of oil (not water) over a steel surface. I was quite surprised by it's shadow ;O)  "Drop & Swadow"

Fred255 posted Tue, 04 March 2008 at 11:08 AM

Yes that's right we are not looking for master pieces.  Just have some fun eg place some water on some tin foil etc and photograph that it does not really matter.

TwoPynts posted Tue, 04 March 2008 at 12:34 PM

Neat oil drop G. I guess the diffraction of the oil caused it to cast such a shadow. Is that a cymbal you are dripping on? :o)

G_Mansco posted Tue, 04 March 2008 at 12:51 PM

Thanks for your comments!
Kort, it's not a cymbal, believe it or not it's an old stainless steel frying pan,(full of scratches) ... that's quite domestic...  LOL . At PSP I used a gradient layer. It looks better with some colour.
Sorry I forgot writing my name before..., I'm Elizabeth ;O)

I was and still am quite intimidated- My camera is not an SLR, just a run of the mill digital but thought I'd give it a go anyway :)
I kid you not, out of at least 100 shots I got only 2 that were any good.
Just stick with it and you'd be suprised at what you can acheive :)

Good Luck everyone :)

P.S. A tip. I found using a flash can make the clarity and sharpness so much better. :)

L8RDAZE posted Tue, 04 March 2008 at 10:42 PM

* My set was the laundry room sink, big glass bowl and a Stars & Strips handkerchief...placed under the bowl.

Used my new external flash in wireless mode for added lighting.

*No postwork or adjustments except  for cropping, resize and frame.

This is a few hundred shots later.  A little better, but still needs improvement.

Oh geez all these shots are awesome. Ive never done drop shots but Ive always wanted to, this is my chance! Lets see... new camera Im going to have to read the manual to figure out this darn focus!
Great shots everyone!

inshaala posted Tue, 11 March 2008 at 9:10 AM

I find if you put a card with a barcode on it (or something easy to focus on) to exactly where the drop will be in the water - focus the cam on the barcode and then set it to manual focus you should be fine :)

Nothing spectacular, just some ripples caused by water dripping off the roof at work into the flooded section of parking lot below. I see the face Tom!

Good job to all. gotta say I like the oil drop best with that awesome shadow.  But I'm a simple girl at heart. :-) I have thought of trying this stuff but frankly, I can hardly keep my camera in focus and still for a flower shot! But maybe I'll give it a go.

One more from me... This was from some rain we had last week, and it was splashing in my planter... Had another try at it... Not too bad.  I should have written down my camera settings :-)
