carrara, 3dmax, blender, Vue, poser, Dazstudio ... etc etc...

Yeah - to do that that would the work of a 3D programs' shader - just tell it to be a Color you pick out (the gold, or blue, pick a color), add Reflection (alter amount so you can still see color underneath) adjust Specularity, etc.

I could do this in either Illustrator or Photoshop, I guess. In Illustrator I would mainly use Mesh-tool. In Ph.shop I think, with quite a few hours and a good idea/sketch of what I wanted the result to be I would mainly use gradient tool.
