Just a question across the board. I do use a dual core AMD right now. Will it pay to upgrade to a Quad core? Any experience anyone?
I am mainly into realistic renders, so using raytracing with depth of field, ambient occlusion, atmosphere and the lot in place, so relying heavily on the processor's muscle power.

I don't have an AMD quad, I have an Intel quad core (Q6600). I see quite a performance improvement in Poser 7 compared to my Athlon64 4400x2.

From all reviews I've read, the Phenom doesn't deliver quite as much bang for the buck as the Q6600.  But it seems to be significantly faster on multithreaded tasks than the AMD dual cores.

So it all depends. If you only have to upgrade your CPU, it might be worth it. But if you also have to replace the mainboard, I woudl advise a Q6600 CPU and a decent Intel P35 based mainboard. That combo is only slightly more expensive (10%) than a Phenom plus a Phenom capable mainboard, but it performs like 30%-40% faster.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
