Attached Link: Terrabrush

Thought you folks might like to know about this cool piece of free software.

Terrabrush is a landscape/texture generator from Germany and has lots of very cool features.

Aside from the usual mountains, you can create (from a drop down menu), craters, sandunes, (great for making waves too), pillars, displacement maps, rings, helix's terraces and lots more.

Drop down menus also includes: masking. brightness, contrast, blur, gamma ,even 3D View and a ton more.

Exports .bmp,.obj, .ter, (for Terragen), .dxf and others.

If you haven't got this in your toolbox, download it and give it a try.

If you want to see what kind of terrains you can make, take a look at me109's gallery. I think Matthias has written a few tutorials showing how to use Terrabrush to create his unique type of terrains. Check here at Rendo under Terragen Tutorials or at his site.

The Terrabrush site is in German, but the software is in English, (except for a few odd spots in German).

I've been using this software off and on for a couple of years to make Terragen terrains and give it a 10 for ease of use and variety of features.

Beside it's FREE and HERETICAL so you can't beat the price, (OR THE CONSEQUENCES).

Should be interesting to see what you guys come up with. ;)

Ooooh...someone's asking for a stint in "the comfy chair".. ...

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

I'd use it, and I don't think it's heretical, simply because Bryce allows for the loading of pictures, and this would be no different.
Thanks for the link. deadwarrior.

OK, just had a play with it. It is kinda more technical then the in built Bryce Terrain Editor and I think it would suit Terragen users more Bryce users because terrain creation seems similar to that I remember in Terragen.
I think the Bryce Terrain editor, well specially that of V.6, is easier to use for most of us Brycers,  but those who have used Terragen will feel more at home.

It's about the same thing as Terraformer2, another Free Terrain Building Device. Personally I use World-Machine 1.25. It is only $40 usd for the Standard and is Free for the Basic.

Ok, i think i should add some remarks...

You'll not find my Terrabrush tutorials here at ReRo, unless you dig deep into the Terragen Forum archives...

...but you can find them on my HP www.matthias-blum.de/Terragen/index_eng.html in  the tutorials section of course ;)
I have to admit, that the translation is not completed because there was no real interest in this Program since Worldmachine came out and because both of my proof readers ran into RL problems... So you might run into some sections that are still in german... if there are questions feel free to ask me!

Matthias

@dw: Thanks for your enthusiasm of my terrains 😄

Thanks for the heads-up about the Tut's Matthias. I've found them really helpful getting the most out of Terrabrush.

dahma, IMHO I've used Terragen for a number of years, and I've found Terrabrush can make terrains that are difficult or impossible with Terragen .09xx (I can't use  the new version of Terragen since I'm still using Win98 :(  ). Same way I can't speak for Bryce 6.xx; can't use that either.

I've used WorldMachine, but I found Terrabrush's learning curve easier and faster than WM. (Geeze I dislike node based modeling.)

The only way I can make terrains similar to Terranbrush is with a paint program or imageJ, a medical MRI imaging program that reads .tiff and exports .bmp's, among other file types. (I've used a electron microscope image of a virus processed with imageJ for a terrain.)

Another feature I like about Terrabrush, is its ability to export terrains as .dxf or .obj files. Load 'em in modeling program and you can make some very unusual objects besides terrains.

I've imported terrains and .obj files into Bryce 5.0 (and some heretical programs as well), and it makes some very interesting terrains and objects.

You're right about Terrabrush being more geared to Terragen, but have found it useful for other programs as well.

Just my humble opinion.

Now on to:

@ The Bryster: Knives? Uhh...What knives?

Pointy with sharp edges kind of knives?

Dangerous if poked kinves?

The kinda knive they use in horror movies?

The kinda of knives they...

Wait a minute you mean...KNIVES!

Yipe!

Lotsa ways for back door heretic practices....It's in the ancient Bryce text that if you abide by the rules of the "Old Ones", Imports of all kinds are permissable. (closes the the large creaking door with an echoey slam)

If it's heretical, and especially if it's free,  I'm all over it!  *Just kidding... I love Bryce!

me109 posted Fri, 18 April 2008 at 2:42 PM

@danamo: Well, it is not my app, i only wrote a little tut about it. It was created by funker.

As far as i know, there is no animation capabilty at all within TerraBrush. But there is an Terragen app, that can morph one terrain in another for animation purpose. I never worked with it, so i don't know what kind of file it generates.
It is called Terranim. For more info take a look here: www.nicolas-hoffmann.net/tutoriel_terranim/index_english.php

The programm itself is hosted at ashundar.com, but the site seems to be down because of updates...terranim.ashundar.com/

Oooops! :blushing: I guess I should have read that more carefully. Good tutorials are always appreciated too. Danke Matthias for the link, I will be sure to check it out if it is still available.

I started in bryce, changed to VUE, looked at Terragen and saw Beyster swinging those big swords above his head so i got rid of VUE and Terragen so now i'm stuck in the world of brysters and still not totally able to do many things in it but if Bryster promise only to whip me once a month i will put some effort in to learning the amazing things that can be done in the program
