hi all. lately ive been using poser again, and i still like it. judy, i think, has alot of potential, she has alot of morphs fo the face like age and etnical ones:) and i think its cool:) maybe there sould be more clothes for her? or morphs?:) it would b so cool to see her  become popular one day again:)

Judy is ugly. Judy is like a mortal sin. Like a Bell's palsy. Like Hell's Breath. Like an Ork's Fart

There's actually one morph pack I've seen which converts Judy in an usable (and even cute) character: Farrah by Quarker

Here is a pic:

And here's Farrah at the MarketPlace:

Judy got swept aside because she wasnt "pretty" -- some folks went so far as to describe her as b*tt-ugly. IMHO, what it comes down to is what you do with these character meshes, not how they look straight out of the box. I can make the P4guy look better than just about any Michael out there, and folks are always a little surprised at the results. Well, y'know, that's what happens when you go in and work these things a little. Further, Judy got a bad rap as well because she came with P5, which was, for reasons that had little to do with the development team at CL and far more to do with the parent company in Germany, a bug-ridden disaster. Folks loved to pile on anything associated with P5, including the base characters -- so any support for them was going to be pretty much a non-issue.

i might even buy wardrobe wizard, or cross dresser so i can use v3's clothes on her:)., i was also considering hexagon or z brush or something for making  body morphs  :P . i am making a render of her,

Judy is one of my favorites. She has one spot between her nose and eye where 5 polys converge, which can make for some ugly renders if you don't get the lighting just right. That might limit morphs, too. But she has nice shoulders, unlike some of the newer figures, and she does nicely in very feminine images.

Whazizname posted Sun, 04 May 2008 at 8:42 AM

I still like judy a lot; and when I discovered that she didn't have much support, I made a point to learn how change her using the tools available in P5. Spending a little bit of time in the face room, a couple of magnets here or there, and careful adjusting of the body morphs can do wonders for her (for any character really). Now, about her being "ugly"...; I think that Judy is more representative of an actual human female than any of the Vickys. I also don't think that she was designed to be a "model type" (I mean aren't there already too many of them available in the Poser Universe?); I think that she was designed to be "The girl next door type", and that is how I use her. It would be nice to see some new things created for her; but then again, the same is true for many "non-model type" figures. (:

grylin posted Sun, 04 May 2008 at 8:45 AM

it would be, yup:) and she has a more female shape too. and not forgetting EJ. shes also versatile

There's a lot more Judy users out there than she's given credit for. They're just not vocal about it because they're tired of seeing responses like Cassette's dissing her on every thread that's made about her. No offense, but it get's old. She's not unusable, she's not butt ugly and she can be georgeous if you put some effort into it!

@Casette I have seen gorgious Judy characters... to me she looks hot as soon as you give her the default Face Room head shape or dial back the "Judy" morph. Judy also has an excellent morphing genital part.

The problem is morphing the breast without breaking the join to the chest. There are good Judy figures that deal with this such as the New Judy and AnAn other Japanese Judy free figures.

I have transfered Eternal Judy morphs to the standard Judy and had them work well. Then there is the Judy with Nea Head hybrid.

Judy takes all sorts of Poses (P4/P5/V2) very nicely, it takes V2 textures or stuff converted to V2 with UTC.Bottom line is Poser 5 figures had the best Face Room support IMO.

I love this figure. Miki and Judy are the most realistic Poser female bodies but Miki is too hi-res for my machine and Judy is a breeze to work with.

I wish I had the Poser 5 physical shipment content CD instead of having bought the downloadable... there were supposed to be Judy FBMs on the content disc. There is a nice Judy FBM set here in Freestuf though.

You can try NeJa which is a hybrid with Nea-head/Judy-Body free at Planit3D member's downloads...

There's some Judy dynamic clothes in freestuff.

I like Judy too. At about 25,000 polys she's medium resolution, not too heavy on the system. Her body shape is more realistic than the Vickis.
You can't blow up her breasts to basketball-like proportions, the mesh breaks. But if you want a more natural looking breast shape she'll do just fine.
One thing I don't like about Judy is the bending of her collars. With raised arms the collars look definitely unnatural.

Eternal Judy is a great morph, she's cute indeed! Especially the face.
AnAn is a very good morph too.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

Actually AnAn is a new figure not just a morph

The mesh is re-desinged and polys were added on knees and breasts also the joint parameters are reworked!

The shape is a bit different too

There are many free clothes for AnAn out there, if I recall right at Yamato's site...

Interesting!

I haven't rendered Judy since I was a rank beginner with Poser.

I happen to be working a shader system that gives a one-click solution to any figure. So I tried it on Judy.

My system did not handle her eyes correctly. I had to go in and switch the shader that got applied to "EyeBall". Also her color map is weak - had to darken the skin tone in the shader.

Still, after 5 minutes work, I think she's a lot more useable than I did before.

I bet there are better color maps out there than the default one.

I didn't morph her at all. IMO, the ears are a little strange and the upper lip is too thick by default. That's probably easily fixed. I love her nose. She's certainly a much better starting point than Dumpling 2 that comes with Poser Pro.

OK. I put her in the face room. I didn't touch any dials, I just hit "Apply Shape Only".

The new shaders come with VSS - my Versatile Shader System.

It's free. Preview Release 1 is available, but it is still buggy and incomplete. If you're feeling adventurous, you can try it.

Read the thread though, as there issues at the moment. The link to the download is in the thread. I'll make you find it by reading the thread :) Poser 6 has problems in general and P7 Mac has some problems.

On a related note - this is P5 Don.

I only just started working on my "African" shaders. And to do it right, I need control masks (image maps) to stop the heavy pigmentation in some areas, like the lips. That means it can't be generic. You'd need such masks for your particular figure. But I think it shows what is possible with the old figures.

This was a low-quality render so there are some AO artifacts on the eyes. Those go away when I render with Irradiance Caching at 99.

The P5s were very solid and worked well with the face room. I used them a long time and preferred them to what was available at the time. They are still superior to the included P6 and 7 characters.

Certainly, Apollo has taken the edge over Don in the male category.

Well you can't transfer FBM dials with MorphManager 4, but you can transfer all of the body morphs and then set each particular body part morph to 1 and have Poser recreate the FBM once you have all the morphs transfered.

Say the morph name is Muscles. First you use Morph mananger to transfer all the morphs to your P5 figure, then select each body part and set the "Muscles" morph to 1. Once each body part has Muscles set to 1, then you go to Poser's "Figure>Create Full Body Morph" option and name the new FBM "Muscles FBM". Whallah! You now have the FBM's you wanted. I Love EJ for that reason and that the morphs worked on the entire P5 family.

The only way I know of to get EJ to work in the faceroom is to Transfer all of her morphs to Judy Nude and use her.

pitklad posted Tue, 06 May 2008 at 3:04 PM

Morph Putty is actually something like the face room for every figure!
I make a version of the figure I want to use where I've removed any expression morph and use it to create character faces, I've made a face poses pack for Domus this way...

The basic Judy cr2 file includes only expressions and all the other morphs are brought to her via the face room, so it is good for creating new expressions for Judy...

The previous free version of WW could convert Posette clothes to Judy, the clothes she comes with are a good start also, with a bit texture work they do the job...

Yes you can.

This will unlock the body actor and you can transfer the FBM dials.

Didn't want to change the face a lot...

Corrected: nostrils ( more like a human creature) , a bit chin, the jaw made a big difference, eyes , lips... Forehead & ears look odd but if those change hair will not work... And Judy should NEVER be bald!!!

Still not there, those need some smoothing on nostrils and cheeks...

Nice work. She looks a lot more pleasant but still like Judy.

One caveat though: If one morphs a face too much, the expression morphs can break.

There was a post long ago about using EJ with the face room... was it just replacing the EJ head with the standard Judy head on the .obj?

grylin posted Fri, 09 May 2008 at 2:24 PM

oh i have no idea. ill search for that:)  and now, off to make sum characters again :)

momodot posted Fri, 09 May 2008 at 3:03 PM

I found an old .cr2 of EJ with the default head but the rigging is currupt an bending the left arm breaks the color mesh.

pitklad posted Mon, 12 May 2008 at 11:26 AM

I've spotted another big issue on Judy's mesh, Teeth are outside the gums! It seams like those were moved by mistake during her creation...

I made a correction morph to move them in the right position plus lowering their height so that Judy can smile showing her upper teeth at last! 😉

The default Judy looks like a young Bette Davis to me.  You know -- one of the old-time actresses from the "Golden Age of Hollywood".......for those of you who are unfamiliar with any actress older than Nicole Kidman, or perhaps anyone older than Miley Cyrus:

I really like using Judy.  She makes great ethnic characters and I find her only "problem" is with her eyes.  They don't morph well.  It's even harder with Penny who've I've tried to reshape for a children's book I'm working on.  Can anyone make Penny (OR Mattie, V2 based Preschooler) to look like this little girl?  I can't pay ... but it would be a great help!  I'd rather use Penny if I can because she has the wardrobe that I need for the story.  She is the subject of the book. Ever noticed how the new, 3rd party figure meshes get bulldozed in the DAZ blitzkrieg? Although in Judy's case, it was more a matter of the P5 launch fiasco. But yeah, I use her all the time; first mesh that didn't have the Poser shovel foot, making her ideal for action poses in something other than combat boots.

I've been thinking that one of these days that I'll remap Judy like I remapped Posette.  That would obviate the necessity of UtCing all those V3 texture to use on her. DPH

PS: Attached is my first Wiktorija render.  Wiktorija was a custom hybrid (Judy body, V3 head) that was made for me by Stahlratte.

I have been playing with Eternal Judy and getting cute faces but overall it is too smooth, on the body and esp. the ear detail. Has anyone come up with an optimal way of blending EJ and the standard Judy for an intermediate effect? I have tried pointing the EJ .cr2 to the standard Judy geometry but I wonder if I should try something else...

There are actually too many head morphs on EJ... esp. since my install doesn't preserve the channel folder grouping for some reason... has anyone ever edited down and rationalized the names on all those dials?

Anyone ever use Eternal Posette by the way?

Nope I never heard of Eternal Possette til now. Do I have to turn in my Poser membership card?

mathman posted Thu, 29 May 2008 at 9:33 PM

Eternal Posette was, sadly, discontinued - due to lack of interest.
She was quite a pretty model if I recall.

dphoadley posted Thu, 29 May 2008 at 11:59 PM

I morphed Judy here with both Ken's Luliana and Pitlad's Octarine MT's, each set to the value of 0.500, so as to get a 50/50 mix. Background is Cyclorama, and the Tree is an old zygote prop.

Rendered in Poser 5, using one of SoCalRoberta's Perfect Lights sets, and then postworked in Photoshop. I desaturated the render, did a slight amount of touchup, and then did various image adjustments and filter layer Layer enhancements.

I went with the black & white because I really don't like the V2 textures that Judy must use, and plan to remap her one of these days so that I can render her with the more realistic V3 textures, without the necessity of UTC-ing them.

LostinSpaceman posted Fri, 30 May 2008 at 2:46 PM

How odd. So was Eternal Posette made by the same person as EJ?

momodot posted Fri, 30 May 2008 at 4:41 PM

Yeah, 3Dream made both. There was HUGE excitement at the time over EJ believe it or not! Note the figure has its own catagory in the market place.

I could never get used to working with EJ because it was too smoothed and had too many confusing dials for me... I really need to try to get an EJ optimized for my work by deleting some of the dials etc. I ended up using the free Judy varients such as Qwerty with the Morphin'Mindy head morphs after moving over just some of the EJ body morphs.

I also have a bunch of Judy hybrids made by Stahlratte.

I have to throw in my 2 cents worth and say that I think Judy is a great character, too. Sure she's not as pretty as Victoria (ut she's pretty enough), or as well liked as Posette, but I think she's still fun to work with. I just wish there was more out there for her. The poor girl must feel so neglected!

shante posted Thu, 12 June 2008 at 11:31 AM

I have her but have not used her and can only blah-blah about her from what I have seen.
She might be ugly out of the box but she has features in even default mode I did not find in casual scrutiny, V3/V4 or any of the new gen standard figures that come with the newer versions of Poser.

  1. prettier hands and feet.
    2.  nicer proportions.
She seems like a cross between and Vicki1/2 (which I loved the most and still use) and P4 Posette (whose only draw backs were that ugly face....far uglier than Judy....and that chest area (those breast configures were wretched) .
Yeah these earlier figures were lower in poly count and looked it in close-ups but I never do close-ups anyway, than the new figures from DAZ or the new Poser Standards but for what i needed V2 & Posette they were fine. I have seen some nice morphs for Posette and have them all and this redo of Judy Farrah, is GORGEOUS. ISOP also did a sweet Judy version I believe called AnAn. Really sweet and offered a wide assortment of clothes and accessories for the AnAn figure.
Ken1 also did a few nice versions of Judy. Svetlana was the one that comes to mind. Nice Scandinavian face and figure.  Ken1 also did a real nice busty Default vicki1 Look-alike called viktorina (he also did some others but not as nice but also busty) so he seems to have gotten around the mesh tearing when you augment her breasts!  :)

shante posted Thu, 12 June 2008 at 11:42 AM

For those complaining there might not be enough good textures for Judy/V2, over at the AerySoul site when they released Luna I begged someone to convert my copy of Luna texture to fit V2. it was approved by those wonderful folks at AerySoul and was made available. I love it and since it fits both V2 and Judy you might want to cruise over there and see if it still available. it was a freebie and not sure if it was limited to those that had the original Luna (V3/V4?) but worth the hunt!

Speaking of Judy revivals, would anybody be interested in theis NEW character that I created today (by spinning various dials, and then spawning new morphs).  I call her Aoshrat', that's Hebrew for Joy ( The A is silent, and the O is long, and the emphasis/accent in on the second sylable).

BTW dp, A nice effect is to dupe the background layer, add the texture to the dupe and then make a mask for that layer painting dark gray to reduce the texture where paint would be built up but more textured on the edges where areas meet.
