Can anyone help me with this?
This is what I'm getting in the preview window.
And that's what I want, leather with a mat finish.
But when I render my scene, the boots end up like this:
Too glossy and it ends up looking like rubber or PVC.
So how can I eliminate the shine and maintain the look of leather?

Try changing the "Specular" and/or "Highlight" color to a darker tone.

Raise highlight size.

Looks like a highlight issue to me as well and I'm just a Poser Noob. Although, could it be some sort of weird AO/Shadow problem if adjusting Highlight properties doesn't fix it?

Sigh, I tried everything and I either get too dull a texture, or shine on less of the boot. Any another sugestions?

Make sure you have no texture map in the highlight window, just colour. That might help.

Post a material-room screenshot. We have to see what you've defined in your material.

You might ...
Try making the "Specular_Color" a little darker
= or =
Try reducing the "Specular_Value" to 0.50000 or less.

...and try to lower reflection value.
By the way: This is a "faked" reflection. Insteed of the sphere-map, try a reflection node (and switch off "Reflection_Lite_Mult").
If you feel it's still to bright, lower all color-parameters in the various nodes.
