It's still in the development stages, but I'm wondering if there's any interest in it. If so, I'll freebie it when done.
Here's how it looks so far...

(Hopefully there will be more interest in that than there was in my BD-5J model.)

I was trying to figure out what the cockpit setup was like and did some searching and actually got a good result. Seems like this particular aircraft model was kit-bashed and rehashed from the original in so many ways - it's sorta amusing. (See website link.) So now I'm trying to figure out which layout to go with...I guess I'll work on some other external features before that. (Since they're more consistent.) But for now I'm waiting on a render of something else. (That's what I get for turning on some of the fancier settings in Carrara and having an ol' compy to boot.)

It is looking good and yes there should be a lot of interest. How will you put the ribs into the wing skiinng?
pauljs75 posted Wed, 21 May 2008 at 3:11 PM
Maybe a bump or displacement map? It doesn't seem that pronounced. Also trying not to get the mesh too heavy, I'm thinking of offering it to FlightGear too.
As for current progress, did the spars and span wires. Posted in the gallery under WIP/Aviation this time 'round.

I'm also debating if I should do an early release that's not quite finished (current state) and then update the file as I go along in development. Or should I wait until I get all the UVs done and a few other pieces?
I believe it is possible to update files at ShareCG, just wondering if there'd be any advantage to using it like that.

The model is coming along so nicely, you may as well keep going 'till it's finished.

Hopefully Sarge, it will be in a few of the more common formats as most users here favour .3ds and .obj...I don't get a lot of Carrara objets etc. in free stuff to approve, so I base my comment on that. I for one would like .3ds, just to put that out there....LOL.. ...

It's going to be .obj for sure, but may also released to .wings and .car formats.I'm going to put up an unsmoothed version with some templates for now, and update later with some other parts and perhaps some textures. I'll have to redo the mapping for the smoothed version (stretches too much in spots right now), updates will come as things develop.

Wow...this is great! I can see a whole series of Crop Duster pictures in the near future. Thanks ever so much and I agree, we need more vintage aircraft. At least they had style and character.

Thanks!
A higher poly version with some instrumentation and controls in the cockpit will be coming up next. (I'll update the ShareCG download, post a message here, and add it to the Free Stuff listings when that gets done.) The current one will still be around in a LoPoly folder in the .zip. Also thinking of doing one in Carrara 5.1 with shaders, constraints, and a modifier or two tacked on.
BTW, if anyone wants to make some textures to go with it, I can put up links at the download or figure out a way to package 'em with the download and provide credit information. I'm going to try my best to get the higher poly UV tempates to match up with the LoPoly ones, so keep fingers crossed on that one.

Anyhow, updated the hi-poly version and threw in a rudimentary add-on texture. There are now some .psd templates included from which I made the basic paint-job with. They have some vector masks which may help keep the painting tidier. Still, I think I'll have to tweak the texture map just a little bit more before it's fully satisfactory.
Also, the hi-poly maps should be a fairly close match alignment-wise with the low-poly ones. So it's not like you'd need to repaint two versions of textures for your own designs.
Next step is to add some instrumentation and such to the cockpits of the hi-poly version.

Minor update, cockpit interor on high-poly version now has seats. Pilot's seat now has some instrumentation as well. You'll have to figure out and make up some mapping for the instruments, but the map templates are there to paint over.

Never thought of making a float plane version. Now I'll have to look to see if that was ever an option...
Anyhow if you're going to do some floats, might want to delete part of the gear supports and redo that part of how they're mounted. I don't think you want the floats to pivot into the prop-arc. I could also suggest having floats with retractable wheels (some aircraft actually had such a thing), perhaps with a hand crank on a rod that runs adjacent to the cockpit.
Still not far enough into some details where I'm at the point of setting up the model for Carrara. But there's nothing stopping you from releasing this as an add-on. I will keep the model in mind when I get to setting it up. By putting the floats in a group and the landing gear in another group, it should be pretty quick to hide one and make the other visible.
