It's going to take me all day to find that old CD.
But, I was wondering if I painted a figure with the old program, does it automatically make a UV map and image I could then touch up in a regular paint program?
If I find it, I'll post what happens.
Cheers,
Lara

Dont know what paint program you are referring to, but dont think you should expect it to automatically create a UV map for you.
The normal way of doing it, at least the way i do it :) is to create a UV map and then export it with the OBJ file or whatever file type you might be using that store UV cords into your 3d paint program. and then paint the figure.
Otherwise you might risk that the UVs are collapsed on top of each other and you pretty much paint randomly with no control of where the colors are going.
But anyway, i dont know what program you are talking about so it might be able to do it :)

Poser 4 came with 2 CDs. There was a Paint 3d program on it. Probably an LE version.
I still haven't found it yet.

3D paint program that's bundled up with Cinema 4D is Body Paint. A model will have to have been UV mapped already in order to paint on it. Making a UV map is a separate process from making a texture, and a good UV map usually takes a bit of time and significant user input to make.
For making textures, Body Paint is a really sweet program. It does have a little bit of a learning curve to it. Once you get the hang of it, it's a really powerful tool.

The Poser CD bundle (when it was owned by Metacreations back in the day) included demo versions of Canoma (a proggie where you could make quasi-3D landscapes from 2D pics) and Paint 3D, which was what you could use to paint on 3D models. Or that's at least what I can remember, that is.

Oh, the P4 CD... LOL, too close to C4D acronym before my morning coffee.
I had canoma way back, and could never get it to run stable enough to do much with it :(

I would wonder if it could actually do that, if it came with P4. Remember: this was a loooooooong time ago, and I dont think we had the technology then. I could be wrong, but I suspect the paint program that came with P4 isnt quite what you think it is.

It was probably Painter 3d, and it probably won't run.

The paint program that came with P4, if it is the same version I have, will not run on XP or Vista. It was made for Windows 95, and when I try to run it on XP it fails.
The other options are:
Argile - about $100 - can do diffuse and bump, no specular or displacement channels:

3D Coat - about $120 - can do everything:
http://www.3d-coat.com/
Body Paint, ZBrush and Mudbox - more professional, can do lots of things other than paint, but this comes at a higher price and a steep learning curve.
There are a few other options, like Blacksmith 3D, which I haven't tried.

I have painter3d running on my xpPro...:) you need to update it to work with anything more then poser propack though, and I do not think that poser is including the designer export anymore since 5 at least..
It will create UVMaps, but along the lines of UVMapper Classic...not too great.
It will import the figure with texture templates though, and you can choose the size to work it with.

if i remember right you open the obj in the paint program and paint right on the obj in 3d space but painting in 3d space takes some getting used to. i only used it a few times and found it difficult to do
